Case of rectal angioleiomyoma in a female patient.

Angioleiomyoma represents a benign stromal tumor, which usually occurs in the subcutaneous tissue of the extremities, although its occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract is very rare. A case of rectal angioleiomyoma in a 40 year-old female patient is described here. Six months earlier, the patient suffered from periodical prolapse of an oval tumor from the anus, along with difficulties in bowel movement. A transanal extirpation of the tumor was performed. This is the first reported case in the English literature of a patient presenting with prolapsed angioleiomyoma of the rectum. During the

Incidence, treatment and outcome of rectal stenosis following transanal endoscopic microsurgery.

BACKGROUND: As an alternative to more radical abdominal surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) offers a minimally invasive solution for the excision of certain rectal polyps and early-stage rectal tumours. The patient benefits of TEM as compared to radical abdominal surgery are clear; nevertheless, some drawback is possible. The aim of our study was to determine the risk factors, treatment and outcomes of rectal stenosis following TEM. METHODS: We analysed a series of 354 consecutive patients who underwent TEM for benign or malignant rectal tumours between 1997 and 2009. We recorded

Congenital hemangiopericytoma presenting as rectal bleeding in a neonate: a case report.

Hemangiopericytoma is a rare soft tissue lesion originating from capillary pericytes that can occur anywhere vascular capillaries are found. It is an uncommon tumor found typically in adults but rarely in children. We describe a previously unreported case of an intraluminal lesion in a neonate.

[Recto-seminal fistula and cancer of the rectum].

The authors present a case of left epididymo-orchitis associated with rectal adenocarcinoma and suspected fistula between the left seminal vesicle and the rectum. This fistula was confirmed by pelvic computed tomography and surgical exploration. Treatment consisted of parenteral antibiotics and surgical drainage of the abscess associated with colorectal resection. This is an original case, as, retrospectively, the cancer of the rectum, diagnosed 4 days previously, was found to be responsible for the recto-seminal fistula and the seminal vesicle abscess.

Rectal invagination due to rectal carcinoma--case report.

Rectal invagination has been considered an important cause of defecation difficulties and blockade (obstructed defecation). The most common the intra-rectal and intra-anal invagination is reported. In this paper authors present a case of a 61 year-old woman with intrarectal invagination due to 6.0-cm tumour localized in the rectum. The computed tomography and colonoscopy were performed for diagnosis of the rectal carcinoma. Histopathological analysis confirmed diagnosis. The patient was treated successfully with radiotherapy followed by rectal anterior resection with lymphadenectomy and adjuva

Feculent meningitis: polymicrobial meningitis in colorectal surgery.

Polymicrobial anaerobic meningitis is a rare event secondary to a contiguous infection in the head or neck. Anaerobic meningitis due to a meningo-intestinal fistula is a rare event with only two cases reported in the literature. We describe a new case of adult polymicrobial anaerobic meningitis after colorectal surgery and radiotherapy and review the previous two cases.

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome: two case reports.

Owing to its rarity, solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is often misdiagnosed as malignant ulcer, or ulcer in association with inflammatory bowel disease. We present two adult females with anorectal symptoms (i.e. pain, tenesmus and bowel habit changes). Both had normal levels of serum carcinoembryonic antigen. Barium enema revealed irregular mucosa with stricture of the lower rectum. An ulcer, 2.7 cm in diameter, was found in one patient but not the other. Rectal biopsy under sigmoidoscopy demonstrated non-specific inflammation, without evidence of malignancy. Because of the intractable sy

Colon and rectum cancer. Patterns of spread and implications for workup.

The preoperative evaluation of patients diagnosed as having colon or rectum cancer is influenced by the anatomic location of the primary tumors; the knowledge that 10-25% of patients harbor detectable metastases at time of initial diagnosis; the observation that as many as one-third of patients with isolated metastases may achieve significant survival benefit by aggressive surgery; and the need to accurately stage low rectum cancers to permit selection of appropriate surgery. Patients are evaluated by colonoscopy, air-contrast barium enema when required, computed tomography, and serum carcinoe

Radiological appearances in the pelvis following rectal cancer surgery.

Radiology has a significant role in the evaluation of surgery for rectal cancer. With recent developments in surgical techniques, the number of neorectal reservoir configurations has increased. It is important to recognize the normal and abnormal appearances, both early and late, following pelvic surgery. The aim of this pictorial review is to demonstrate the imaging techniques that are used in both the investigation and the follow-up of patients who have undergone uncomplicated or complicated rectal resection.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma associated with a chronic perianal fistula - a review of cases from a single institution.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological features of mucinous adenocarcinoma associated with perianal fistulas (MAF), to assess the importance of preoperative MRI analysis, and to determine the optimal surgery. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the data from seven patients with MAF treated at our hospital between 2000 and 2013, and herein discuss the importance of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and of radical surgery. RESULTS: The male to female ratio was 5:2, and the mean age of the patients was 63 years old (28-70). The media

General practitioner referral of patients with lower gastrointestinal symptoms.

Of 500 consecutive patients with symptoms of colorectal disease referred to a specialist hospital for outpatient assessment, 305 were studied. There was a low incidence of examination by the general practitioner; less than half the patients had a rectal examination and 31% had no examination at all. In cases where GPs made a diagnosis, this was correct in half, which both demonstrates the potential for dangerous misdiagnosis and confirms the fact that many anorectal conditions can be identified by the history alone. It is suggested that direct-access clinics in a colorectal unit would minimize
