[A case of cerebral cysticercosis treated with praziquantel in the postoperative period].

A 51-year-old man with cerebellar signs and raised intracranial pressure had negative indirect and serological tests for cysticercosis. During operation cysticerci were removed from the cisterna magna, fourth ventricle and aqueduct. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of cysticercosis. After operation the condition of the patient deteriorated consciousness disturbances, involuntary movements of the left upper extremity and paraparesis appeared. Only after treatment with Praziquantel with simultaneous administration of oedema-reducing agents nearly complete regression of neurologic…

Antileishmanial effect of silver nanoparticles: Green synthesis, characterization, in vivo and in vitro assessment.

The drugs used to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) cannot effectively penetrate lesions. Nanogold and nanosilver have been used for treating or enhancing drug delivery in CL. The present study used Commiphora molmol (myrrh) to synthesize silver nanoparticles (MSNPs). The MSNPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. In addition, antiparasitic effect of myrrh silver nanoparticles (MSNPs) was assessed on Leishmania major both in vitro and in vivo. Five concentrations of MSNPs (10, 50, 80, 100, and 150 μl/100 μL) were used to study their eff

5-lipoxygenase inhibitors and their anti-inflammatory activities.

A wide variety of agents have been reported as 5-LO inhibitors. The majority of the series appear to be lipophilic reducing agents, including phenols, partially saturated aromatics, and compounds containing heteroatom-heteroatom bonds. Many of these are not selective 5-LO inhibitors, but often affect CO and other LOs as well. In vivo systemic activity for many of these has been, in general, disappointing, probably because of poor bioavailability caused by lipophilicity and metabolic instability (oxidation, and conjugation of phenolic compounds). However, topically a number of agents have shown…

Critical considerations in the administration of antineoplastic therapy for patients with malignant solid tumors undergoing hemodialysis.

Patients with chronic kidney disease exhibit a higher risk of developing malignancies, and among those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on dialysis, approximately 7% are diagnosed with new-onset tumors within five years. Patients with ESRD who are receiving antineoplastic treatment exhibit a significantly higher incidence and greater severity of adverse effects associated with antineoplastic agents compared to individuals with normal renal function. This complexity involves multiple factors, including the therapy options and dose adjustment of antineoplastic agents, drug-related toxicities,

The role of the infectious agents in the pathogenesis and evolution of atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process due to the endothelial reaction to stress risk factors, only some of which are known. Clinical and experimental observations have suggested that several infectious agents are involved in this process. These agents, particularly the germ Chlamydia pneumoniae, and their relationship to the atheromata are described. Two hypotheses concerning how these infectious agents act are suggested. Both hypotheses are based on the capacity of these agents to induce the production, by endothelial cells, of the so-called heat shock protein (HSP), one of whose

A Comparative Study of Nitroxide-Based Biradicals for Dynamic Nuclear Polarization in Cellular Environments.

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a powerful tool to enhance the NMR signals of molecules by transferring polarization from unpaired electron spins to nuclei through microwave irradiation. The resulting signal enhancements can enable the analysis of samples that have previously been intractable by NMR spectroscopy, including proteins, nucleic acids, and metabolites in cells. To carry out DNP, the sample is doped with a polarization agent, a biradical containing two nitroxide moieties. DNP applications in cells, however, present significant challenges as nitroxides are often susceptible to

[The Importance of teriparatide in the treatment of osteoporosis].

The anabolic agent teriparatide (TPTD) clearly increases bone mineral density both in daily and weekly formulations. In addition, the effectiveness of daily TPTD in reducing the risks of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures and of weekly TPTD in reducing the risk of vertebral fractures has been established. TPTD is indicated for severe osteoporosis, such as cases of multiple fractures, hip fractures, and fractures sustained during antiresorptive therapy. TPTD has also been shown to be effective for male osteoporosis and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Furthermore, TPTD can only be given

Exploring the impact of medication type and infusion duration on IV smart pump alarms.

PURPOSE: Alarm fatigue is a serious problem in hospitals, often affecting nurses' concentration and increasing the risk of patient harm. Alarms associated with intravenous smart pumps (IVSPs) contribute to alarm fatigue; however, little is known about what causes unnecessary IVSP alarms or how to reduce them. The purpose of this study is to explore variables that impact the type and number of IVSP alarms and to demonstrate how alarm data can be used to identify IVSP alarm problem areas to target for improvement. METHODS: A dataset containing IVSP infusion and alarm data for 62 million infusio

Opportunities for Precision Dosing of Cytotoxic Drugs in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Bridging the Gap in Precision Medicine.

Precision dosing of classical cytotoxic drugs in oncology remains underdeveloped, especially in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Despite advancements in targeted therapy and immunotherapy, classical cytotoxic agents continue to play a critical role in NSCLC treatment. However, the current body surface area (BSA)-based dosing of these agents fails to adequately address interindividual variability in pharmacokinetics. By better considering patient characteristics, treatment outcomes can be improved, reducing risks of under-exposure and over-exposure. This narrative review explores op

Recommendations for the optimal use of bone forming agents in osteoporosis.

Bone forming agents, also known as anabolic therapies, are essential in managing osteoporosis, particularly for patients at very high-risk of fractures. Identifying candidates who will benefit the most from these treatments is crucial. For example, this group might include individuals with severe osteoporosis, multiple vertebral fractures, a recent fragility fracture or those unresponsive to antiresorptive treatments. Definitions of patients with a very high fracture risk vary across nations, are often based on fracture history, bone mineral density (BMD), and/or fracture risk calculated by FR

Infectious and coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerotic event is one of the most causes of death in the world. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one manifestation of atherosclerosis. It is well-known that several risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), smoking, hypertension (HTN), have effects on it. It is proposed that infection can lead to atherosclerosis or even make its process faster. Here, we discuss about the effect of some of infectious agents on the atherosclerosis and CAD. METHODS: In this study, first we did a comprehensive search in PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct using some related keywords such as

Salvage chemotherapy in follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: focus on tolerability.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is typically characterized by repeated remissions and relapses, and many patients receive a number of therapeutic interventions during their disease course. Although treatment options are evolving rapidly, stem cell transplantation offers a potentially favorable impact on survival. In general, many patients with FL are not eligible for this approach by virtue of age and/or comorbid disease. Salvage chemotherapy consequently remains the mainstay of treatment, being individualized according to disease and patient characteristics, goals of therapy, and patient preference.

Rescue from enhanced alkylator-induced cell death with low molecular weight sulfur-containing chemoprotectants.

Modulation of glutathione has been proposed as a mechanism to alter the efficacy and toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. We investigated in vitro cytoenhancement of chemotherapy toxicity by reducing cellular glutathione levels with L-buthionine-[S,R]-sulfoximine (BSO), and chemoprotection with small molecular weight sulfur-containing agents that mimic or replace glutathione. Cytotoxicity, caspase-2 enzymatic activity, and in situ DNA staining for apoptosis were assessed in cultured human small cell lung carcinoma cells and fibroblasts. BSO treatment reduced the half-maximal cytotoxic dose of

Unraveling the antimicrobial performance and mechanisms of Syzygium aromaticum and Myristica fragrans extracts-based coatings in strawberries storage.

Food contamination caused by spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms motivates the necessity for natural antimicrobial agents. However, the effectiveness of natural antimicrobial agents as substitutes for chemical preservatives, as well as the underlying microbial mechanisms of their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, remain unclear. Here, the performance of Syzygium aromaticum and Myristica fragrans extracts in food preservation and the underlying antimicrobial mechanisms were evaluated in comparison with the chemical preservative sodium benzoate. Using strawberry as a representative examp

The role of response adapted therapy in the era of novel agents.

The optimal treatment of classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (cHL) requires an individualized approach, with therapy guided by pretreatment clinical risk stratification and interim response assessment with positron emission tomography (PET). The overall goal is to achieve high cure rates while minimizing acute toxicity and late therapy-related effects. Interim PET-adapted strategies (iPET) were initially developed with traditional chemotherapy, reducing intensity after interim complete response and escalating treatment for patients with iPET+ disease. Recently, novel agents including brentuximab vedotin

A glance into the future of myositis therapy.

The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are chronic diseases of the skeletal muscle that comprise various conditions, including dermatomyositis, polymyositis, immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, and the antisynthetase syndrome. Although there are a number of distinguishing features, all these disorders are characterized by an immune and inflammatory response mainly directed against the muscle. Hence, therapy is geared toward curbing the autoimmune and inflammatory response. A quite wide range of medications are currently available to treat these disorders, but despite all therapeutic progress

A small molecule that induces translational readthrough of CFTR nonsense mutations by eRF1 depletion.

Premature termination codons (PTCs) prevent translation of a full-length protein and trigger nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD). Nonsense suppression (also termed readthrough) therapy restores protein function by selectively suppressing translation termination at PTCs. Poor efficacy of current readthrough agents prompted us to search for better compounds. An NMD-sensitive NanoLuc readthrough reporter was used to screen 771,345 compounds. Among the 180 compounds identified with readthrough activity, SRI-37240 and its more potent derivative SRI-41315, induce a prolonged pause at stop codons and

Biological Targets for Dupuytren Disease.

Dupuytren disease is a connective tissue disorder occurring on the palm, causing flexion contractures of fingers. There is a pressing need for therapeutic interventions that can slow, stop, or even incrementally reverse the progression of the disease. Numerous in vitro studies have shed light on cellular and molecular agents that contribute to contractures. This article comprehensively reviews various growth factors that can be targeted to prevent and limit the progression and recurrence of Dupuytren contracture (DC). Fibroblasts are the major cell population that has been reported for the con
