Neighborhood environmental burden and chronic kidney disease in the US: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyze the association between overall environmental burden and chronic kidney disease prevalence in communities across the United States. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study based on national neighborhood-level environmental burden and health data. METHODS: The study used data from 71,688 U S. census tracts from the Centers for Disease Control. We performed a mixed-effects linear regression model to analyze the association between the combined environmental burden and the prevalence of CKD. We analyzed whether there are differences or potential interactions

Neighbourhood belonging, social cohesion, and mental wellbeing of children and parents in an ethnically diverse community sample in England.

BACKGROUND: Neighbourhood cohesion is considered an important and modifiable determinant of mental health that interacts with factors such as deprivation and ethnicity in complex ways. UK studies adequately representing ethnic minority groups are however scarce. We examined associations between neighbourhood belonging, social cohesion, and mental wellbeing of children and parents in an ethnically diverse community sample in England. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional baseline data from the TOGETHER study, a randomised controlled trial testing the effectiveness of the ‘Strengthening Families,

Neighborhood Social Determinants of Health Are Associated With Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease Outcomes.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Significant health disparities exist in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), driven by social determinants of health (SDOH). Few studies have explored neighborhood-level SDOH in MASLD. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with MASLD at a multi-state healthcare institution. Primary outcomes were MASLD burden, mortality, and comorbidities by neighborhood SDOH, assessed using the Social Deprivation Index in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. RESULTS: A total of 69,191 patients with MASLD were included, 45,003 of which

Associations of neighborhood greenspace, and active living environments with autism spectrum disorders: A matched case-control study in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence links early life residential exposure to natural urban environmental attributes and positive health outcomes in children. However, few studies have focused on their protective effects on the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of neighborhood greenspace, and active living environments during pregnancy with ASD in young children (≤6 years). METHODS: We conducted a population-based matched case-control study of singleton term births in Ontario, Canada for 2012-2016. The ASD and environmental data was g

The effects of neighborhood disadvantage and adverse childhood experiences on conditioned pain modulation in adults with chronic low back pain.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) remains a major health crisis worldwide. Current conceptualizations of cLBP utilize the biopsychosocial model, yet research on social factors remains limited. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a risk factor for a variety of chronic health problems, including cLBP. However, the extent to which socioeconomic context might influence associations between ACEs and cLBP remains unclear. Socioeconomic factors such as healthcare access and living conditions, which cluster at the neighborhood level, may affect how ACEs relate to cLBP in adulthood. This study examined

Neighborhood Resource Deprivation as a Predictor of Bullying Perpetration and Resource-Driven Conduct Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Resource deprivation is linked to systemic factors that disproportionately impact historically marginalized communities, and theoretical work suggests that resource deprivation may increase risk for bullying behaviors. Bullying perpetration is an intransigent social problem and an early risk factor that perpetuates the school-to-prison pipeline. This study explored how resource deprivation (family- and neighborhood-level metrics) was associated with early childhood bullying behaviors and clinician-rated symptoms of psychopathology, while accounting for other known risk factors (earl

The Contribution of Neighborhood Context to the Association of Race with Severe Maternal Morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) has disproportionate frequencies among racial minorities and those of socioeconomic disadvantage, with people of Black race consistently having the highest proportion. Neighborhood level deprivation has been associated with maternal morbidity and mortality, including adverse pregnancy outcomes. We sought to explore the relationship between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and SMM and describe how neighborhood context impacts the relationship between race and SMM. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of all delivery admiss

Living arrangements as determinants of myocardial infarction incidence and survival: A prospective register study of over 300,000 Finnish men and women.

Living with a spouse is associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease mortality in middle age, but it remains unclear whether marriage and other living arrangements are important both for the development of the disease and the survival following incidence. Cohabitation and living alone have also become more common in many Western societies and thus warrant further study. We explored the association between living arrangements and myocardial infarction (MI) incidence and fatality. We used a population-based register sample of adults aged 40-60 in Finland in 1995 (n = 302,885) followe

Parental health and adolescent obesity in the context of community disadvantage.

This study examined whether parental physical health, including obesity, is associated with adolescent obesity considering the context and level of community disadvantage using survey data from 13,907 adolescents (12-18 years of age) and their parent(s) from Wave 1 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health as well as 1990 census tract data. Poor parental health, particularly obesity, is associated with adolescent obesity, even in disadvantaged contexts; however, community disadvantage moderates this relationship suggesting parental health factors are less salient in terms of adol

Partner abuse or violence, parenting and neighborhood influences on children's behavioral problems.

We examined the relationship between neighborhood characteristics, parenting behaviors, experiences of intimate partner abuse or violence (IPV) and children's behavioral problems in a socioeconomically diverse sample of 383 families residing in an urban environment. Data were collected in the Fall/Winter of 2002. The census block group of residence was used as our measure of neighborhood. Census block groups typically contain 1500 residents on average. IPV was measured using a modified version of the HITS (physically Hurt, Insult, Threaten, and Screamed at) scale, a short four item tool assess

Equity in adjuvant radiotherapy utilization in locally advanced head and neck cancer: A SEER-data based study.

BACKGROUND: Not all patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC) who are eligible for adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) following upfront surgery appear to receive it. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Selected patients from 2009 to 2018 had locally advanced HNC, underwent upfront surgery, and were eligible for adjuvant RT. Multivariable logistic regression and chi-squared test were used to analyze available patient and tumor characteristics. RESULTS: Of 12 549 patients, 84.5% underwent adjuvant RT, 15.5% did not. How do residents perceive alcohol availability and its impact on drinking behaviour? A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Reducing alcohol availability has been identified as a potential approach to reduce alcohol use and related harm. In order to regulate alcohol availability at a local level, it is important to involve communities in decision-making and ensure interventions are locally acceptable and appropriate. To do this, we need to improve our understanding of how residents conceptualise alcohol availability and its impact on behaviours. This paper uses data collected in Scotland, a country with particularly high levels of alcohol-related harm, to explore the perspectives of residents, on loca

Healthy ageing in urban settings: neighbourhood environments modify the association between intrinsic capacity and social participation among older adults in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how intrinsic capacity and environment interact to sustain social participation remains limited. We examined how intrinsic capacity, neighbourhood environments and their interaction relate to social participation among urban adults aged ≥50 years in Brazil. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 5068 urban residents aged ≥50 years from the nationally representative 2015-16 Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Intrinsic capacity was assessed as a five-domain composite (cognitive, psychological, sensory, locomotor, vitality). Environment was measured using a 15

Private garden exposure and public park access in relation to type-2 diabetes incidence: a UK Biobank cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Existing longitudinal studies examining the relationship between greenspace exposure and incidence of type-2 diabetes (T2D) have primarily operationalized greenspace using vegetation indices. Little is known about the effect of greenspace types (e.g., private gardens) and public park access. METHODS: We investigated the associations between residential greenspace exposure, including private gardens (determined using Ordnance Survey MasterMap™ Greenspace) and public park access, with the incidence of T2D using the UK Biobank (UKBB) data. Public park access, such as nearest distance

Perceived neighborhood cohesion and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S.

The U.S. entered a "second pandemic" characterized by depression and loneliness after the initial outbreak of COVID-19. These psychological consequences have driven researchers to identify protective factors during this crisis. The present study tested whether perceived neighborhood cohesion, or that neighbors trust and count on one another, related to fewer depressive symptoms and less loneliness as the pandemic unfolded. Two waves of data were collected online from the same adults in April and October, 2020 (N = 1,928). People who reported greater neighborhood cohesion had fewer depressive s
