Utilization of a smartphone-based app for N95 respirator fit recommendations: A feasibility study assessing app respirator selection accuracy and usability compared to standard fit test processes.

Traditional quantitative N95 respirator fit testing methods are resource-intensive and may not optimize acceptable fit across diverse facial structures due to underlying variables in respirator design. This feasibility study evaluated the potential of integrating a novel smartphone-based app into existing fit testing workflows as a potential precursor to fully virtual fit testing processes. A feasibility study was conducted at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center involving 41 healthcare workers undergoing routine N95 respirator fit testing. Participants used a smartphone app that

Impact of Three Single-Step Decontamination Methods on Respirators and Medical Gowns.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many methods of decontamination were proposed to combat the severe shortages of disposable personal protective equipment (PPE), such as N95 respirators and gowns, for healthcare workers. Although several decontamination methods were granted emergency use authorizations for N95 respirators, no methods were granted for gowns. The main concerns for decontamination of disposable PPE are twofold. First, the method must adequately decontaminate the PPE, and second, the device must retain its performance requirements after decontamination. The current study examined auto

The role of masks and respirators in preventing respiratory infections in healthcare and community settings.

The covid-19 pandemic saw frequent changes and conflicts in mask policies and politicization of masks. On reviewing the evidence, including studies published after the pandemic, the data suggest respirators are more effective than masks in healthcare, but must be continuously worn to be protective. Healthcare and aged care settings amplify outbreaks, so protection of patients and staff is paramount. Most guidelines assume risk is only present during close contact or aerosol generating procedures, but studies show intermittent use of respirators is not protective. New research in aerosol scienc

Bioenergetics and metabolism of the pulmonary endothelium. Scientific session I: ReSPIRE 2025.

Session I of the inaugural biennial Research Symposium on Pulmonary Injury and Repair of the Endothelium (ReSPIRE) highlighted recent advances in endothelial bioenergetics and metabolism and their role in pulmonary vascular diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that the maladaptation of metabolic pathways in the lung endothelium contributes to the progression of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The conference highlighted several new aspects of endothelial metabolism, including the use of alternative fuel sources such as fructose and fatty

Impact of respiration on abdominal pain thresholds in healthy subjects - A pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Pressure algometry is a validated method for objectively quantifying pain sensitivity in musculoskeletal disorders, particularly useful for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment responses. However, its application to abdominal pain sensitivity remains insufficiently standardized, especially regarding the influence of physiological factors such as respiration. This study investigated the impact of respiratory phase (inhalation vs exhalation) on abdominal pressure pain thresholds (PT) to support the development of standardized assessment protocols. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy medica…

Evaluating N95 respirator designs: A mixed-methods pilot and feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has had a global impact, underscoring the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE). Use of N95s reduces the risk of airborne infection; however, in the absence of equitable designs, health care workers (HCWs) who do not fit the average White male head and face are at an increased risk of airborne infectious diseases. OBJECTIVES: Primary: Feasibility of a mixed-method study, with a sample size of 100, 50% of participants self-identifying as non-White and having at least one characteristic of interest. Secondary:

Thermal sensitivity of respiration and ROS emission of muscle mitochondria in deer mice.

The impacts of heat exposure on mitochondrial physiology are poorly understood in most mammals. We examined the thermal effects on muscle mitochondrial function in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), a species in which running endurance is impaired when heat exposure increases body temperature beyond 40 °C. Mitochondrial physiology was examined at 37, 40, and 42 °C using both permeabilized fibres and isolated mitochondria from the gastrocnemius muscle. Hot temperatures increased leak respiration, reduced the coupling efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation, and increased reactive oxygen specie…

Depth and Seasonality of Soil Respiration in Caragana korshinskii Plantation on the Loess Plateau.

Quantifying deep soil (10-100 cm) and non-growing-season soil respiration (SR) is crucial for refining carbon (C) cycle models, yet the regulatory mechanisms governing these processes remain unclear. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on deep soils and non-growing seasons to elucidate how soil properties regulate SR under these special conditions. We conducted an on-site field experiment in the Caragana korshinskii plantation, measuring SR at soil depths of 0-10 cm, 10-50 cm, and 50-100 cm during the non-growing season and growing. The results suggested that the annual cumulative soil…

Mechanisms and functions of respiration-driven gamma oscillations in the primary olfactory cortex.

Gamma oscillations are believed to underlie cognitive processes by shaping the formation of transient neuronal partnerships on a millisecond scale. These oscillations are coupled to the phase of breathing cycles in several brain areas, possibly reflecting local computations driven by sensory inputs sampled at each breath. Here, we investigated the mechanisms and functions of gamma oscillations in the piriform (olfactory) cortex of awake mice to understand their dependence on breathing and how they relate to local spiking activity. Mechanistically, we find that respiration drives gamma oscillat…

Elastomeric half-mask respirator disinfection practices among healthcare personnel.

BACKGROUND: Disposable N95 respirator shortages during the COVID-19 and 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemics highlighted the need for reusable alternatives, such as elastomeric half-mask respirators (EHMRs). Two US medical organizations deployed reusable EHMRs during the COVID-19 response. In addition to wipe-based disinfection following patient care episodes expected per local policies at both organizations, postshift centralized cleaning and disinfection (C&D) was expected at one site (A), permitting shared-pool EHMR use, and optional at the other (Site B), where EHMRs were issued to individuals. Dose-dependent effects of acetaminophen and ibuprofen on mitochondrial respiration of human platelets.

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are widely used over-the-counter medications to reduce fever, pain, and inflammation. Although both drugs are sa … at, was aimed at assessing the acute, concentration-dependent effects of each drug on mitochondrial respiration. Using the high-resolution respirometry technique, a concentration-dependent decrease of oxygen consumption in both intact and permeabilized platelets was found for either drug, mainly by inhibiting complex I-supported active respiration. Moreover, …

Mitigation of Respirable Aerosol Particles from Speech and Language Therapy Exercises.

INTRODUCTION: Phonation and speech are known sources of respirable aerosol in humans. Voice assessment and treatment manipulate all the subsystems of voice production, and previous work (Saccente-Kennedy et al., 2022) has demonstrated such activities can generate >10 times more aerosol than conversational speech and 30 times more aerosol than breathing. Aspects of voice therapy may therefore be considered aerosol generating procedures and pose a greater risk of potential airborne pathogen (eg, SARS-CoV-2) transmission than typical speech. Effective mitigation measures may be required to ensure

Estimating cobalt exposure in respirable dust from cobalt in inhalable dust.

Cobalt is a commonly used element in metal industry. Exposure to workers occurs mainly by inhalation of cobalt-containing dust. For the evaluation of cobalt exposure, risk assessment and investigations on occupational diseases, measurements of cobalt in respirable dust are needed. Up to now, often only data for cobalt in inhalable dust are available, which is due to the earlier classification of the limit value in this fraction. Therefore, a possibility to convert cobalt concentrations mathematically from inhalable into respirable concentrations is desirable. In this study, 639 parallel measur

Estimating nickel exposure in respirable dust from nickel in inhalable dust.

The conversion of dust components is of high importance for retrospective evaluations of exposure levels, of occupational diseases or the time trend of occupational dust exposure. For this purpose, possibilities to convert nickel concentrations from inhalable to respirable dust are discussed in this study. Therefore, 551 parallel measurements of nickel concentrations in inhalable and respirable dust fractions were extracted from the exposure database MEGA (maintained at the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance) and investigated by linear regressi

In vitro toxicity assessment of respirable solid surface composite sawing particles.

Solid surface composites (SSCs) are a class of popular construction materials composed of aluminum trihydrate and acrylic polymers. Previous investigations have demonstrated that sawing SSC releases substantial airborne dusts, with a number-based geometric mean diameter of 1.05 µm. We reported that in mice, aspiration exposure to airborne SSC dusts induced symptoms of pulmonary inflammation at 24-h postexposure: neutrophilic influx, alveolitis, and increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in lavage fluid. The particles appeared to be poorly cleared, with 81% r

A signal demodulation-based method for the early detection of Cheyne-Stokes respiration.

Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) is a sleep-disordered breathing characterized by recurrent central apneas alternating with hyperventilation exhibiting a crescendo-decrescendo pattern of tidal volume. This respiration is reported in patients with heart failure, stroke or damage in respiratory centers. It increases mortality for patients with severe heart failure as it has adverse impacts on the cardiac function. Early stage of CSR, also called periodic breathing, is often undiagnosed as it only provokes hypopneas instead of apneas, which are much more difficult to detect. This paper demonstrate…
