Aconitine induces mitochondrial energy metabolism dysfunction through inhibition of AMPK signaling and interference with mitochondrial dynamics in SH-SY5Y cells.

Aconitine, a highly toxic alkaloid derived from Aconitum L., affects the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. However, the underlying mechanism of aconitine-induced neurotoxicity remains unclear. This study investigates the effects and mechanism of aconitine on mitochondrial energy metabolism in SH-SY5Y cells. Results demonstrated that aconitine exposure suppressed cell proliferation and led to an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and excessive lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release. Aconitine (400 μmol/L) induced abnormal mitochondrial energy metabolism that quantified b

The evolutionary hypothesis of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Human otoliths, primarily formed from salts of calcium and carbonate, are different from bones of the skeleton, which are composed of calcium phosphate. The echinoderms, which share the earliest common ancestor with us, began to protect the body by making an endoskeleton out of calcium and carbon dioxide dissolved in the sea. In subsequent vertebrates, aerobic respiration supported strong muscle activity, but an occasional shortage of oxygen led to low pH due to the accumulation of lactate produced by anaerobic respiration, increasing the risk of melting bones composed of calcium carbonate. So

The relationship between specific anxiety syndromes and somatic symptoms in adolescents with asthma and other chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: The impact of a chronic disease on the emotional well-being of children and adolescents is controversial in the literature. This study tested the hypotheses that 1) a specific approach is required to assess emotional deviations in adolescents with chronic diseases and 2) specific anxiety symptoms are predictive of excessive somatic symptoms. METHODS: Emotional and somatic symptoms were measured in four groups, selected from a community sample of 897 adolescents: 32 with asthma, 20 with other severe chronic diseases, 30 with median scores (the true comparison group), and 29 with mi

Peripheral chemoreceptors in congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a rare disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by failure of the autonomic control of respiration. The primary defect is believed to involve central respiratory control; however, no specific lesion has been identified. We report two cases of CCHS (one female, 3 mo of age and one male 2 yr of age) in which there was detailed examination of the neural, muscular, and chemoreceptor components of respiratory control. Although no specific abnormalities were identified in the central nervous system (CNS) or muscles of respiration, striking cha
