Humans with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) often recover voluntary control of elbow flexors and, to a much lesser extent, elbow extensor muscles. The neural mechanisms underlying this asymmetrical recovery remain unknown. Anatomical and physiological evidence in animals and humans indicates that corticospinal and reticulospinal pathways differentially control elbow flexor and extensor motoneurons; therefore, it is possible that reorganization in these pathways contributes to the asymmetrical recovery of elbow muscles after SCI. To test this hypothesis, we examined motor-evoked potentials (M

Damage to the corticospinal and reticulospinal tract has been associated with spasticity in humans with upper motor neuron lesions. We hypothesized that these descending motor pathways distinctly contribute to the control of a spastic muscle in humans with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). To test this hypothesis, we examined motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation over the leg representation of the primary motor cortex, maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs), and the StartReact response (shortening in reaction time evoked by a startling stimulus) in the

Many glandular organs are developed by branching morphogenesis, an efficient and ubiquitous process for creating a larger cellular area for metabolic requirement. To regenerate a glandular organ, such as salivary glands, recapitulation of branching processes may be requisite. At present, the roles of biomaterials in regenerative branching have never been thoroughly explored. By culturing the embryonal submandibular gland (SMG) on different substrata, including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan, and polycarbonate (PC), this study demonstrated for the first time that chitosan was capable of prov

Recombinant Human Parathyroid Hormone (rhPTH 1-34) administration is an effective treatment to improve bone mass in osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to develop a Tissue Engeenering Tool for bone regeneration. We evaluated the efficacy of a freeze dried rhPTH membrane in calvarial critical size defect (CSD). Forty-four Wistar female rats (body weight 150 ± 50 g) with CSD (5 mm) were divided into four groups: group 1: rhPTH membrane (rhPTHm); group 2: atelocollagen membrane (Cm); group 3: rhPTH and atelocollagen I (CrhPTHm); group 4: without any treatment (CG). All samples were evaluated

The pre-cerebellar nuclei act as a gate for the entire neocortical, brainstem and spinal cord afferent input destined for the cerebellum. Since no pathoanatomical studies of these nuclei had yet been performed in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) or type 3 (SCA3), we carried out a detailed postmortem study of the pre-cerebellar nuclei in six SCA2 and seven SCA3 patients in order to further characterize the extent of brainstem degeneration in these ataxic disorders. By means of unconventionally thick serial sections through the brainstem stained for lipofuscin pigment and Nissl material, we

Cataplexy in the narcoleptic canine may be modulated by systemic administration of monoaminergic compounds. In the present study, we have investigated the effects of monoaminergic drugs on cataplexy in narcoleptic canines when perfused locally via microdialysis probes in the amygdala, globus pallidus/putamen, basal forebrain, pontine reticular formation and ventral tegmental area of narcoleptic and control Doberman pinchers. Cataplexy was quantified using the Food-Elicited Cataplexy Test and analyzed by electroencephalogram, electroculogram and electromyogram. Local perfusion with the monoamin…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Experimental studies suggested neurovascular compression of the brain stem as a cause of hypertension. The aim of our prospective study was to investigate the effect of microvascular decompression in patients with severe hypertension with neurovascular compression on blood pressure and central sympathetic nerve activity in the long-term.
METHODS: Fourteen patients (4 males; mean age, 46+/-8 years) with essential hypertension underwent microvascular decompression of the brain stem. Vasoconstrictor muscle sympathetic nerve activity (recorded by microneurography: burst fr

OBJECTIVE: To compare the incidence of adverse events between cryolaser cryosclerotherapy (CLaCS) and isolated sclerotherapy for lower limb telangiectasias and reticular veins and to determine pooled adverse event rates after CLaCS.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from inception through February 2025 for studies of adults with telangiectasias or reticular veins (Clinical, Etiological, Anatomical, and Pathophysiological C1-C2) treated with CLaCS, reporting quantitative adverse event data. Risk ratios (RRs) were pooled using Mantel-Haens

BACKGROUND: Mitral valve (MV) disease including myxomatous degeneration is the most common form of valvular heart disease with an age-dependent frequency. Genetic evidence indicates that mutations of the human transcription factor FOXC1 are associated with MV defects, including MV regurgitation. In this study, we sought to determine whether murine Foxc1 and its closely related factor, Foxc2, are required in valvular endothelial cells (VECs) for the maintenance of MV leaflets, including VEC junctions and the stratified trilaminar ECM (extracellular matrix).
METHODS: Adult mice carrying tamoxif

AIMS: Yolk sac tumour postpubertal-type (YSTpt) shows a wide range of histological patterns and is challenging to diagnose. Recently, forkhead box transcription factor A2 (FoxA2) emerged as a driver of YSTpt formation and a promising marker for diagnosing YSTpt. However, FoxA2 has not been tested in the different patterns of YSTpt. This study aimed to assess the staining pattern of FoxA2 in te different patterns of YSTpt and other germ cell tumours of the testis (GCTT), comparing it with glypican-3 (GPC3) and α-fetoprotein (AFP).
METHODS AND RESULTS: FOXA2, GPC3 and AFP immunohistochemistry w

BACKGROUND: Although the importance of ectopic lymphoid tissues (eLTs) in the pathophysiology of nasal polyps (NPs) is increasingly appreciated, the mechanisms underlying their formation remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To study the role of interleukin (IL)-17A, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 13 (CXCL13) and lymphotoxin (LT) in eLT formation in NPs.
METHODS: The expression levels of CXCL13 and LT and their receptors, in addition to the phenotypes of stromal cells in NPs, were studied by flow cytometry, immunostaining, and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Purified n

BACKGROUND: The prosthetic materials currently used to repair abdominal wall defects sometimes have to be placed in contact with the visceral peritoneum. This interface is often a site of complications such as intestinal obstruction or fistulas due to adhesions. The aim of this study was to follow the process of adhesion formation in several prosthetic materials by sequential laparoscopy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Defects (7 x 5 cm) were created in the abdominal wall of 30 New Zealand White rabbits and repaired using Surgipro polypropylene mesh (PP), Ultrapro monocryl-prolene mesh (UP), Dual Mesh
