Bilateral Traumatic Carotid-Cavernous Fistula in a Child: Corkscrew Eyelid Vessels as an Indicator of Severe Congestion.

An 11-year-old girl presented with bilateral traumatic caroticocavernous fistula associated with corkscrew eyelid vessels, which were considered indicators of severe congestive disease in this case. Coil embolization was performed; similar to other congestive findings such as proptosis, orbital bruit, increased intraocular pressure, congested scleral and retinal vessels, engorged eyelid vessels resolved immediately after coil embolization. This pediatric case is unique given the caroticocavernous fistula was bilateral and was associated with prominent dilatation of the eyelid vessels, named fo…

Retinal and Choroidal Capillary Perfusion Are Reduced in Hypertensive Crisis Irrespective of Retinopathy.

PURPOSE: Hypertensive crisis causes end-organ damage through small-vessel damage as described histologically. Noninvasive optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) makes it possible to image retinal and choroidal capillaries on a microscopic level in vivo. We quantified eye vessel perfusion changes in hypertensive crisis using OCTA. METHODS: Patients with hypertensive crisis (systolic blood pressure ≥180 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥110 mm Hg) and age-matched healthy controls were included in the study. OCTA en face 3 × 3-mm images of the superficial and deep retinal layers an

Contribution of O4+ oligodendrocyte precursors and astrocytes to the glial ensheathment of vessels in the rabbit myelinated streak.

The barrier properties and glial ensheathment of blood vessels in the retinal myelinated streak of adult New Zealand White rabbits were char … godendrocytes (Morcos Y, Chan-Ling T. Glia 21:163-182, 1997). The present data indicate that the preretinal vessels of the myelinated streak possess barrier properties typical of microvasculature in the central nervous system, and that both O4+ cells and astrocytes contribute to the glial ensheathment of these vessels. These vessels thus differ markedly from the …

Optical coherence tomography and fundus autofluorescence imaging study of chorioretinal atrophy involving the macula in Alagille syndrome.

We report the first case in the literature of chorioretinal atrophy involving the macula in an 11-year-old girl with Alagille syndrome, as examined by optical coherence tomography, and fundus autofluorescence imaging. Funduscopy revealed diffuse choroidal hypopigmentation with increased visibility of the choroidal vessels and symmetric, well circumscribed macular discoloration. Anomalous oblique configuration of the optic disc and peripapillary tortuous vessels were also detected. Optical coherence tomography demonstrated decreased retinal thickness, especially the outer retinal layer, and the

Retinal Microvascular Dysfunction Reflects Vascular and Alzheimer's-Related Pathology in Dementia With Lewy Bodies.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) frequently coexists with cerebrovascular injury and Alzheimer's-related pathology, yet accessible in vivo markers of these processes remain limited. The retinal microvasculature shares structural and physiological characteristics with cerebral small vessels and may provide a non-invasive window into neurovascular and neurodegenerative pathology. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 32 individuals with DLB and 31 age-matched cognitively unimpaired controls (CU) underwent swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), brain MRI, and

Choroidal and retinal vascular changes in adults with Down syndrome: Insights into the Alzheimer's disease continuum.

INTRODUCTION: Retinal and choroidal vascular changes have been proposed as a non-invasive central nervous system (CNS) proxy for clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, their role in Down syndrome (DS), the largest genetically predisposed group for AD, remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted ultra-widefield and optical coherence tomography imaging on 24 individuals with DS and 17 controls and extracted various vascular parameters. Data were analyzed using logistic and linear regression models. RESULTS: The DS retinae exhibited supernumerary vessels that were wider and thinned mo

The congenital unilateral retinocephalic vascular malformation syndrome (bonnet-dechaume-blanc syndrome or wyburn-mason syndrome): review of the literature.

Retinal arteriovenous malformations represent a rare syndrome in which a direct connection of major vessels without interposition of capillaries may lead to various complications such as thrombosis and vessel occlusion. This review comprises the computer-stored data of all the 121 patients with arteriovenous malformations described in the literature. Twenty-seven patients had typical Bonnet-Dechaume-Blanc syndrome (in this article designated as congenital retinocephalofacial vascular malformation syndrome), 25 had incomplete congenital retinocephalofacial vascular malformation syndrome (withou

Blood flow rate estimation in optic disc capillaries and vessels using Doppler optical coherence tomography with 3D fast phase unwrapping.

The retinal volumetric flow rate contains useful information not only for ophthalmology but also for the diagnosis of common civilization diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, or cerebrovascular diseases. Non-invasive optical methods for quantitative flow assessment, such as Doppler optical coherence tomography (OCT), have certain limitations. One is the phase wrapping that makes simultaneous calculations of the flow in all human retinal vessels impossible due to a very large span of flow velocities. We demonstrate that three-dimensional Doppler OCT combined with three-dimensional fo…

Bilateral macular colobomata: Temporal dragging of optic disc.

A 13-year-old male presented with decreased vision and squint from childhood. He had bilateral large colobomata at the macula in each eye, the one on the right being larger than the left. The disc was dragged temporally with straightening of the temporal retinal vessels. This is a case report of bilateral large macular coloboma and serves to report its association with a temporally dragged disc and straightened temporal retinal vessels. A dragged disc if present with a colobomatous defect at the macula may strengthen the case for diagnosis of macular coloboma and help exclude other differentia…
