Maternal and fetal outcomes of uterine rupture and factors associated with maternal death secondary to uterine rupture.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality and morbidity are the priority agenda for sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia. Uterine rupture is the leading cause of maternal and fetal death in developing countries. Limited evidence is available on the magnitude of uterine rupture; maternal and fetal outcomes of uterine rupture and factors associated with maternal death secondary to uterine rupture in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the magnitude of uterine rupture; maternal and fetal outcome of uterine rupture and factors associated with maternal death secondary to uterine rupture in Debremarkos Refer…

Ruptured and Non-Ruptured Omphaloceles: Characteristics, Management and Mortality Risk Factors in a Nigerien Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Omphalocele is a congenital anterior abdominal wall defect classified by size and sac integrity. In resource-limited settings, ruptured forms, low birth weight and delayed referral are associated with high mortality, yet ruptured and non-ruptured forms are seldom compared directly. AIM: To evaluate the distinctive diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic aspects of ruptured and non-ruptured omphaloceles. METHOD: This prospective, descriptive study included all patients with omphalocele admitted to the Paediatric Surgery Department of the National Hospital Amirou Boubacar Diallo Ni…

A Ruptured Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma of the Pancreas Extensively Evaluated Before and After the Rupture: A Case Report.

Pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) rarely ruptures because of their surrounding fibrotic capsules and has never been reported with detailed information regarding prerupture and postrupture states. We report a case of MCN rupture where performed emergency surgery was performed while waiting for elective surgery. A 54-year-old woman was referred to our department for a pancreatic cystic tumor with slight abdominal pain. A cystic tumor with a nodular lesion was found, with a contrast effect measuring 78 mm in diameter. On day 21, the patient visited our hospital complaining of increased ab…

Spontaneous rupture of a rare adrenal artery aneurysm mimicking a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Spontaneous adrenal artery aneurysm rupture is an exceedingly rare but life-threatening condition that requires emergent treatment. We report on an 80-year-old male who underwent an emergent exploratory laparotomy and repair of a ruptured adrenal artery aneurysm and highlight the role of both vascular surgery and interventional radiology in the management of this scenario.

Length of rupture of membranes in the setting of premature rupture of membranes at term and infectious maternal morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to define the time thresholds of increased risk for infectious maternal morbidities with relationship to length of ruptured membranes at term. STUDY DESIGN: We designed a retrospective cohort study of all women with premature rupture of membranes beyond 37 weeks' gestation at a single institution. Dichotomized time thresholds of length of ruptured membranes before delivery were examined in 2-hour increments using bivariate and multivariable analyses to assess the rates of chorioamnionitis and endomyometritis. RESULTS: Among the 3841 women meeting inclusio…

Subacute Left Ventricular Free-Wall Rupture After Thrombolysis: From Concealed Rupture on CT to Successful Surgical Patch Repair.

Background and Clinical Significance: Left ventricular free-wall rupture (LVFWR) is a rare but devastating mechanical complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), with reported in-hospital mortality approaching 90% without surgical intervention. Although its incidence has declined in the contemporary primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) era, LVFWR remains an important cause of early post-infarction death, particularly after delayed reperfusion or fibrinolytic therapy. Subacute or contained "oozing" ruptures pose a unique diagnostic challenge because hemodynamic stability and …

Combined rupture of Reissner's membrane and round window: an experimental study in guinea pigs: experimental double-membrane rupture.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss caused by combined rupture of Reissner's membrane and the round window (RW) membrane (the double-membrane rupture) may differ depending on the site of the lesion on Reissner's membrane. The purpose of this experimental study was to reveal the relationship between the hearing impairment and the site of the lesion on Reissner's membrane. BACKGROUND: According to experimental studies on perilymphatic fistula (PLF), profound hearing loss is not induced by rupture of RW alone, but by the double-membrane rupture. However, the mechanism responsible for hearing loss in the dou…

Ruptured Ectopic Pregnancy Misdiagnosed with Ruptured Corpus Luteum: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Ectopic pregnancy can be mistakenly reported as a ruptured corpus luteum. A 22-year-old woman was initially misdiagnosed with a ruptured corpus luteum and treated with analgesics at a local clinic. Persistent symptoms led her to our hospital, where a pelvic ultrasound revealed a 5.2 cm ×4.8 cm hematoma. Despite the significant hematoma, her vital signs were stable. A urine pregnancy test was positive, β-hCG was 5553 mIU/mL, and hemoglobin (Hb) was 6.3 g/dL. After a blood transfusion, methotrexate (MTX) was administered, reducing β-hCG to 4428 mIU/mL by day 5. Four weeks later, β-hCG was 723.6 …
