Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease that mainly affects the scalp. The objective of this study was to evaluate the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in scraping samples of patients with scalp SD. Nevus sebaceous is a complex hamartoma most commonly found on the scalp, face, and neck and is often present at birth, although some may be diagnosed later in infancy. We report the first prenatal diagnosis of isolated nevus sebaceous that presented at 19 weeks' gestation as a large and exophytic tumor of the scalp. This case emphasizes the crucial role of ultrasound examination performed with high-frequency probes, which revealed associated diffuse lesions of the face. Identification of such a facial involvement could have a dramatic prognostic impact.

Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the sebaceous gland. It is diagnosed mainly on histopathology and, clinically, it may mimic other neoplasms like squamous or basal cell carcinoma. We report a case of mycosis fungoides in a 27-year-old woman who presented with a lump in the forehead. The condition was confirmed with tissue diagnosis. Gallium scintigraphy accurately delineated the complete extent of the disease, and served as a reference for objective assessment of response of the disease to treatment.

A 62-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of a 2-cm cystic mass involving his occiput. There had been recent enlargement, and the clinical impression was that of a pilar cyst. Angiosarcomas of the scalp area are rare tumors mostly affecting elderly patients. In many series, potential treatment options for patients with scalp angiosarcoma have included surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Total scalp avulsions are devastating injuries and replantation is the best form of reconstruction. We present our experience of replantation of six totally avulsed scalps done between 1996 and 2004. All were technically successful, but one was lost in the post-operative period due to accidental shearing of the scalp during nursing care. Neonatal teratomas are rarely located in the scalp. We present a 10-day-old female newborn with mature teratoma of the occipital scalp. The tumor mass, which had no intracranial extension, was excised completely when the patient was 14 days old. The scalp defect was reconstructed with local flaps. No recurrence was detected 3 months after the surgery. Because the patient did not return for routine follow-up 6 months after surgery, we called the parents and learned that the patient had suddenly died. A necropsy to explain the cause of death was not available.
