Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) and linear sclerosis en coup de sabre (LScs) are rare, related, autoimmune conditions of focal atrophy and sclerosis of head and face which are associated with the development of focal epilepsy. The scarcity of PRS and LScs cases has made an evidence-based approach to optimal treatment of seizures difficult. Here we present a large systematic review of the literature evaluating 137 cases of PRS or LScs, as well as three new cases with epilepsy that span the spectrum of severity, treatments, and outcomes in these syndromes. Analysis showed that intracranial abnormal

Lipodermatosclerosis may develop clinical aspects that have striking analogies with Van Gogh's style of painting cypresses. They may reveal specific physiopathological disorders and identify a homogeneous group of patients with chronic venous insufficiency.

Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre ('the stroke of the sword') is an uncommon form of morphea with onset typically in childhood or adolescence. Involvement is usually located on the paramedian forehead and is associated with alopecia. It is microscopically indistinguishable from other forms of scleroderma. We present a 51-year-old woman who presented with alopecia and subsequently developed linear scleroderma en coup de sabre on her adjacent forehead. Histopathology revealed a strikingly perineural lymphocytic and plasmacytic infiltrate, extending deeply into the subcutis and fascia. To our k

We describe a 2-year-old African-American boy with a 4-month history of gradually worsening unilateral edema that was initially noted on his left hand and then approximately 2 weeks later on his left lower extremity. In addition, linear hypopigmented patches were noted along the left forearm and leg, with no appreciable scarring or induration. The edema on the left-hand side of his body progressed so that he developed tense bullae on his left hand. Two months later, the hypopigmented patches were indurated and bound-down, especially over the left groin and thigh. A biopsy specimen from this ar

We describe the case of a 32-year-old male patient who had presented from birth with generalized ichthyosiform dermatosis, palmoplantar keratoderma with constrictive bands around the fingers and keratotic plaques in a linear arrangement, located in the large skin folds. The dermatopathological examination showed orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis and epidermal hyperplasia with hypergranulosis. No other members of the patient's family were affected. With these clinical and histological findings, the diagnosis was keratosis linearis with ichthyosis congenita and sclerosing keratoderma (KLICK syndrome

We describe a 54-year-old woman with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis complicated by Felty's syndrome and lung involvement who developed generalized morphoea with no features of systemic sclerosis. To our knowledge this is the first description of such a case.

It has been described two main phenotypes of helper T cells. On activation, the immune system develops the most effective Th response. Whereas Th1 cells promote cell-mediate immunity against intracellular pathogens and an over expression could favor autoimmune diseases; Th2 cells develop humoral immunity against extracellular pathogens promoting allergic response. Normally, the two profiles coexist in the same individual with different grades of expression. Recently, it has been described a new subset: Th17, which is related to tissue injury in autoimmune diseases. Then, allergic and autoimmun

PURPOSE: Early breast cancer follow-up guidelines for patients who underwent surgery suggest a regular and accurate clinical examination of the breast area, for an early identification of cutaneous or subcutaneous breast cancer relapse. Nonetheless, breast skin lesions arising in patients treated with mastectomy for breast cancer can be caused by several diseases. A series of diagnostic hypotheses should be considered, not only focusing on cutaneous metastasis, but also on dermatologic and systemic diseases.
CASE REPORT: In February 2015, a 37-year-old patient underwent a right subcutaneous m

BACKGROUND: Nintedanib was approved for the treatment of scleroderma and scleroderma-related interstitial lung disease, as it decrease the forced expiratory volume.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old Asian female patient with systemic scleroderma 6 years ago developed breathlessness, nausea, heart palpation, and sudden severe occipital headache over the preceding week. She was receiving aspirin 81 mg/day and amlodipine 5 mg/day. Her diagnosis was diffuse scleroderma with pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung involvement, and renal crisis. The modified Rodnan score was 18. We begin captopril

Juvenile scleroderma (JS) is a rare chronic connective tissue disorder characterized by stiffening of the skin and soft tissues, including the oral cavity and perioral tissues, leading to fibrosis and a large spectrum of internal organs involvement, cosmetic defects, and early infant disability. The aim of this study was to investigate the histomorphological features of lesions of oral mucosa tissues in children with juvenile scleroderma (JS). 39 JS patients (9 with juvenile systemic sclerosis - JSS and 20 with juvenile scleroderma of head-JSH aged from 5 to 17 years were observed with dental

Juvenile onset systemic sclerosis is a rare chronic multisystem connective tissue disease characterized by skin induration, microangiopathy, autoimmune disturbances and widespread fibrosis of internal organs. Primary cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with a variable phenotype, including heart failure and arrhythmias, which lead to poor short-term prognosis. Isolated heart transplantation is a rare approach for the treatment of advanced heart failure in patients with systemic sclerosis. We report on two juvenile SSc patients receiving cardiac transplantation due to h

Scleroderma 70 (Scl-70) is commonly used in the clinic for aiding systemic sclerosis (SSc) diagnosis due to its recognition as autoantibodies in the serum of SSc patients. However, obtaining sera positive for anti-Scl-70 antibody can be challenging; therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a specific, sensitive, and easily available reference for SSc diagnosis. In this study, murine-sourced scFv library were screened by phage display technology against human Scl-70, and the scFvs with high affinity were constructed into humanized antibodies for clinical application. Finally, ten high-affi
