Entomological surveys and insecticide resistance in the dengue vector Aedes aegypti in Dakar, Senegal: First detection of the kdr mutation.

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of arboviruses in Senegal, yet this species is not typically targeted by routine vector control programs. Through entomological surveillance, we investigated over a one-year (2022-2023) the risk of arbovirus transmission in Dakar, Senegal, the spatial distribution of insecticide resistance and the underlying resistance mechanisms. Weekly ovitraps were deployed in 15 localities (10 per locality), and monthly adult mosquito collections were conducted in six localities. Arboviruses were detected in adult Ae. aegypti using Real-time quantitative reverse transcri…

Identifying populations at high risk of malaria: a mixed-methods case-control study to inform targeted interventions in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Senegal has made significant progress in reducing the burden of malaria, but transmission remains highly heterogeneous, with specific population subgroups likely at higher risk. Consultations with the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) and a review of available data identified nomadic pastoralists, gold miners, and Koranic school students as potential high-risk populations (HRPs). This study aimed to evaluate whether these populations are at higher risk of malaria and better characterize their exposure patterns to inform the design of targeted intervention strategies. METHO…

African schistosomes in small mammal communities: Perspectives from a spatio-temporal survey in the vicinity of Lake Guiers, Senegal.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease of public health significance. In view of its elimination as a public health problem by 2030, adopting a One Health approach is necessary, considering its multidimensional nature. Animal reservoirs, in particular, pose a significant threat to schistosomiasis control in Africa and beyond. In this study, we conducted a spatio-temporal survey of Schistosoma infections in small mammal communities and intermediate snail hosts in the vicinity of Lake Guiers in northern Senegal. Sampling campaigns were undertaken four times between April 2021 and August…

A Case of Visceral Leishmaniasis in a 4-Year-Old Child Living in Nonendemic Area Located in Suburbs of Dakar, Senegal.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an infectious disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. Sporadic cases are observed in nonendemic areas and often associated with limited foci; therefore, the disease is easily overlooked. In addition, other diseases have similar clinical symptoms, which make it difficult for clinicians to make an accurate diagnosis and to provide effective treatment. We identified visceral leishmaniasis in a 4-year-old child in Pikine, Senegal. The patient was admitted to the Pikine National Teaching Hospital for haemorrhagic, tumoral, and infectious syndromes. At admi…

Molecular characterization of schistosome cercariae and their Bulinus snail hosts from Niakhar, a seasonal transmission focus in central Senegal.

Bulinus senegalensis and Bulinus umbilicatus, two sympatric freshwater snails found in temporal ponds in Senegal, were thought to be involved in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium and/or Schistosoma curassoni. To better understand the role of these Bulinus species in the transmission of human and animal Schistosoma species, B. senegalensis and B. umbilicatus were collected in 2015, during a malacological survey, from a temporal pond in Niakhar, central Senegal. Snails were induced to shed cercariae on two consecutive days. Individual cercariae from each snail were collected and preser…

Molecular detection and quantification of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes carriage in used RDTs in malaria elimination settings in northern Senegal.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Malaria surveillance requires powerful tools and strategies to achieve malaria elimination. Rapid diagnostic tests for malaria (RDTs) are easily deployed on a large scale and are helpful sources of parasite DNA. The application of sensitive molecular techniques to these RDTs is a modern tool for improving malaria case detection and drug resistance surveillance. Several studies have made it possible to extract the DNA of Plasmodium falciparum from RDTs. The knowledge of gametocyte carriage in the population is important to better assess the level of parasite transmission in eliminat

Baseline Ex Vivo and Molecular Responses of Plasmodium falciparum Isolates to Piperaquine before Implementation of Dihydroartemisinin-Piperaquine in Senegal.

Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, which was registered in 2017 in Senegal, is not currently used as the first-line treatment against uncomplicated malaria. A total of 6.6% to 17.1% of P. falciparum isolates collected in Dakar in 2013 to 2015 showed ex vivo-reduced susceptibility to piperaquine. Neither the exonuclease E415G mutation nor the copy number variation of the plasmepsin II gene (Pfpm2), associated with piperaquine resistance in Cambodia, was detected in Senegalese parasites.

Unavoidable Risks: Local Perspectives on Water Contact Behavior and Implications for Schistosomiasis Control in an Agricultural Region of Northern Senegal.

Human schistosomiasis is a snail-borne parasitic disease affecting more than 200 million people worldwide. Direct contact with snail-infested freshwater is the primary route of exposure. Water management infrastructure, including dams and irrigation schemes, expands snail habitat, increasing the risk across the landscape. The Diama Dam, built on the lower basin of the Senegal River to prevent saltwater intrusion and promote year-round agriculture in the drought-prone Sahel, is a paradigmatic case. Since dam completion in 1986, the rural population-whose livelihoods rely mostly on agriculture-h…

Characterizing the Influence of Structural Determinants of HIV Risk on Consistent Condom Use Among Female Sex Workers in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) are disproportionately affected by HIV even in the most generalized HIV epidemics. Although structural HIV risks have been understood to affect condom negotiation among FSWs globally, there remain limited data on the relationship between structural determinants of HIV risk, including violence and socioeconomic status, and condom use among FSWs across sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we describe the prevalence of structural determinants and their associations with condom use among FSWs in Senegal. METHODS: In 2015, 758 FSWs >18 years of age were recruited using r…

Epidemiology and Burden of Bloodstream Infections Caused by Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Producing Enterobacteriaceae in a Pediatric Hospital in Senegal.

CONTEXT: Severe bacterial infections are not considered as a leading cause of death in young children in sub-Saharan Africa. The worldwide emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) could change the paradigm, especially in neonates who are at high risk of developing healthcare-associated infections. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the epidemiology and the burden of ESBL-E bloodstream infections (BSI). METHODS: A case-case-control study was conducted in patients admitted in a pediatric hospital during two consecutive years. Cases were patients with Enterobacter

Does Tropheryma whipplei contribute to travelers' diarrhea?: A PCR analysis of paired stool samples in French travelers to Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Tropheryma whipplei was recently associated with acute infections as gastroenteritis in children. We hypothesize that T. whipplei may be a contributing microbe in traveler's diarrhea. METHOD: The presence of T. whipplei was investigated by using a specific PCR on stool samples of travelers to Senegal before and after traveling, independently of the occurrence of diarrhea. RESULTS: A total of 59 travelers returned both stool samples before and after travel and 16 (27%) experienced diarrhea during travel. Fifty-three patients (89.8%) were negative for T. whipplei before and after t…

Micro-geographical heterogeneity in Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium infection and morbidity in a co-endemic community in northern Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium are co-endemic in many areas in Africa. Yet, little is known about the micro-geographical distribution of these two infections or associated disease within such foci. Such knowledge could give important insights into the drivers of infection and disease and as such better tailor schistosomiasis control and elimination efforts. METHODOLOGY: In a co-endemic farming community in northern Senegal (346 children (0-19 y) and 253 adults (20-85 y); n = 599 in total), we studied the spatial distribution of S. mansoni and S. haematobium single and mixe…
