We retrospectively reviewed our series of primary total wrist arthroplasty with the Freedom® prosthesis. The primary outcome measure was revision, and secondary measures included radiographic loosening, pain, complications, movement range, grip strength and patient-reported measures. We reviewed 12 implants in 11 patients (mean age 59 years, range 45-80) with a mean radiological and clinical follow-up of 2.7 and 3 years, respectively. One radial component failed to integrate and was revised at Day 84. Four carpal components demonstrated areas of lucency. There was a statistically significant r

In France, the number of revisions for total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has increased by 29% between 2006 and 2010. Published studies have reported a revision rate of approximately 11% for hemi-arthroplasty and total anatomical implants, and 10% for reversed implants. The decision to revise or not revise a TSA requires that a rigorous, clinical, laboratory and imaging initial assessment be done in order to answer five questions. Is it infected? Is it unstable? Is it worn? Is it loosened? How is the rotator cuff? This assessment and an evaluation of the bone stock are required to decide whethe

Higher complication rates in reverse shoulder arthroplasty are commonly reported in patients receiving smaller humeral implants, potentially due to reduced bone stock and compromised implant stability. While bone-preserving hybrid onlay-Grammont humeral stems are thought to improve cortical engagement, comparative biomechanical evidence remains scarce, particularly in small humeri. A 2 × 2 factorial design was conducted in this exploratory study to evaluate the independent effects of implant size (large vs. small humerus) and implant placement (inlay vs. hybrid onlay-Grammont) on implant stabi

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this study was to compare 2-year anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) functional and radiographic outcomes between Walch type A and B glenoids treated with an all-polyethylene glenoid designed for hybrid fixation with peripheral cement and central osseous integration. The secondary purpose was to evaluate outcomes based on central peg technique. The hypotheses were that there would be no difference in short-term radiographic or functional outcome scores based on preoperative glenoid morphology or central peg technique.
METHODS: We performed a multicent

BACKGROUND: Acquired acromial compromise, including thinning (less than 30% of the normal acromion) or fragmentation resulting from acromiohumeral impingement or previous acromioplasty, is a concern in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). This condition may lead to shoulder pain and difficulties in arm elevation because of acromial insufficiency fracture.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Do patients with acromial compromise (thinning less than 30% of normal acromion or fragmentation) have worse functional outcome scores, ROM, and strength after RSA compared with patients without acromial compromise? (

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid proximal pole fracture with avascular necrosis is a surgical challenge, particularly in patients with high functional demand. An option is the pyrocarbon adaptive proximal scaphoid implant (APSI), replacing the necrotic proximal pole.
METHODS: A long-term follow-up study of the early cases treated in our department was conducted. Thirty-six patients with a median follow-up time of 19 years (range, 11-25) were included in the analysis, performing clinical and radiological evaluations.
RESULTS: Clinically, significant improvements were observed in mean pain Numeric Rating

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff arthropathy with loss of active arm elevation can be successfully treated with nonanatomic reverse total shoulder arthroplasty to restore active elevation. Shoulder kinematics in this context predominantly focus on glenohumeral motion, neglecting scapular motion, although both substantially contribute to global shoulder motion. Because scapular kinematics are difficult to assess clinically and in the laboratory, they are not well understood and therefore are often reduced to glenohumeral models with a static scapula.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does the scapulohumeral rhy

BACKGROUND: In an anatomic shoulder replacement (aTSR) good results have been reported with the use of a stemless humeral prosthesis. In vitro a ceramic articulation with polyethylene has been shown to produce less polyethylene wear particles than with metal. This study aims to evaluate clinical and radiographic results of a stemless aTSR with a ceramic head articulating with a polyethylene glenoid component, with mid-term follow-up.
METHODS: All patients (n = 92) in this prospective study had an aTSR utilizing a stemless humeral component with a ceramic head and a cemented double pegged ceme

BACKGROUND: Long-stemmed humeral components are often associated with revision shoulder arthroplasty. However, long-stemmed humeral components will likely prove useful in selected patients with extra large shoulders and in those with bone loss from nonarthroplasty causes and in humeral fractures. This study was developed to examine the frequency of use of longer humeral stems, identify the indications for their use, define the results, and enumerate the complications encountered.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five primary shoulder arthroplasties were followed-up clinically and radiographicall

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing numbers of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) procedures, the long-term results have been rarely reported. We previously reported early outcomes of a cohort of patients treated with a Grammont-style RTSA. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes after a minimum of 10 years, and to document prosthetic survival and complications.
METHODS: Clinical outcome assessment was based on the absolute and relative Constant scores and the active range of motion. Radiographic evaluations of scapular notching, tuberosity osteolysis, and periprosthetic

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the subjective and objective outcome of the percutaneous minimal osteosynthesis in elderly patients. Untreated, unstable and dislocated proximal humeral fractures show poor functional and subjective results. Reduction and fixation of the fragments is essential to achieve a good clinical outcome. Especially noted in elderly patients, the osteosynthesis is concurrent with the implantation of a prosthesis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined 31 patients with a mean age of 72 years (51-87) after an average follow-up period of 15.8 months (9-31). T

Periprosthetic fractures of hip and knee prostheses are gaining clinical significance due to the increasing numbers of of primary arthroplasties. Additionally, these fractures are often associated with poor bone quality or present in patients after multiple revision procedures and concomitant excessive bone defects precluding those patients to be adequately treated by conventional osteosynthesis. Revision implants provide a wide range of options for the treatment of these fractures in order to achieve good clinical results. In the acetabular region cavitary defects associated with periprosthet

BACKGROUND: Anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) is typically reserved for end-stage glenohumeral arthritis with an intact rotator cuff and adequate glenoid bone stock. With the exponential increase in total shoulder arthroplasty surgeries, complications and the need for re-revision surgery have also increased. Typically, aTSA is revised to a reversed prosthesis, but in some cases the anatomic configuration is maintained. Revision surgery is associated with a higher risk of complications and re-revisions than primary surgery. However, the literature on re-revision surgery after aTSA i

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic elbow stiffness together with severe bony deformity of the distal humerus poses a great challenge for elbow surgery specialists. For young and high-demand patients suffering from grievous bony deformity but with no/mild joint degeneration, total elbow arthroplasty is not a suitable option, and hemiarthroplasty often results in a significant amount of bone stock loss, making it difficult to perform a revision procedure. Resurfacing arthroplasty has been applied in the shoulder, hip, and knee joints, as well as the radiocapitellar joint. However, resurfacing arthroplast

PURPOSE: Trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint replacement has become a valid option in the therapeutic arsenal of TMC joint osteoarthritis in Europe. Good mid-term results of the MAÏA TMC joint prosthesis suggested that it is a reliable procedure. This study aimed to assess the long-term results of this modular uncemented ball-and-socket hydroxyapatite-coated implant.
METHODS: This single-center retrospective study evaluated 92 MAÏA TMC joint prostheses in 76 patients with a minimum of 10 years of follow-up. Indications for the procedure were painful TMC joint osteoarthritis both at rest and during
