Maxillofacial fractures sustained in bicycle accidents.

The present report is an analysis of 93 patients (52 male; 41 female) treated in 1981-1983 for maxillofacial fractures sustained in bicycle … ommon associated injury. Mean hospitalization of the in-patients (38%) was 4.1 days and the average sick leave was 14 days. The results of the study indicate that the use of protective helmets should be strongly recommended to cyclists, although most commercially available helmets do not protect the whole facial area and especially not the chin.

The Price of Absence: Productivity Costs and Sickness-Absence Episodes Attributable to Mental and Behavioral Disorders in the Brazilian Federal Workforce - A Nationwide Time-Series Study (2012-2024).

BACKGROUND: Mental and behavioral disorders (MDs) represent a leading cause of sickness absence among Brazilian public servants, generating substantial social and economic burdens. Despite their impact, comprehensive nationwide assessments of productivity costs attributable to MDs over extended periods remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to estimate the productivity costs associated with MDs (ICD-10 Chapter V) among Brazilian federal civil servants from 2012 to 2024 compared with the four other most prevalent non-mental causes of absence. METHODS: We conducted a retrospectiv

Risk factors for school-based presenteeism in children: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Children attending school whilst unwell, known as school-based presenteeism, results in negative impacts on education and mental and physical health. We aimed to identify the risk factors for this behaviour. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search of five databases (11 July 2022) using words associated with school (e.g., school and childcare) and presenteeism (e.g., presenteeism and sick leave). The studies are synthesised according to the risk factors associated with school-based presenteeism and are grouped into themes by related topics. RESULTS: Our review included 18 studi…

Work Disability in Early Systemic Sclerosis: A Longitudinal Population-based Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To study work disability (WD) with reference to levels of sick leave and disability pension in early systemic sclerosis (SSc). METHODS: Patients with SSc living in the southern part of Sweden with onset of their first non-Raynaud symptom between 2003 and 2009 and with a followup of 36 months were included in a longitudinal study. Thirty-two patients (26 women, 24 with limited SSc) with a median age of 47.5 years (interquartile range 43-53) were identified. WD was calculated in 30-day intervals from 12 months prior to disease onset until 36 months after, presented as the prevalence …

Structural brain correlates of symptom severity in stress-induced exhaustion.

Exhaustion due to chronic stress, a hallmark feature of burnout, represents a substantial and growing public health burden, yet its structural brain correlates remain poorly understood. We used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to examine associations between regional gray matter volume and symptom severity in a cohort of 300 individuals on self-reported sick leave due to the Swedish medical condition stress-induced exhaustion disorder (ED), characterized by debilitating fatigue following prolonged stress exposure. Symptom severity was assessed using the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire (SMBQ-…

When the doctor believes you, but you're still not happy: Legitimized contested illness and patients' negative post-consultation experiences and agency.

This article investigates patients' negative and ambivalent lived post-consultation experiences and the related agencies when a doctor legitimizes their contested illness. The primary data consist of 25 telephone interviews conducted soon after the patients' consultation with a doctor. All the interviewed patients suffered from sick building syndrome. Using reflexive thematic analysis in our study, underpinned by critical realist ontology and epistemology, we generated three themes that characterized these lived post-consultation experiences, and how they shaped patient agency. The results dem

As populations age, many countries have increased the statutory retirement age to sustain pension systems and maintain labor supply. This ar … employed and their coworkers. The reform led to a modest but statistically significant increase in sick leave due to occupational injuries equivalent to 2.6% of the pre-reform mean. This effect mainly reflects the direct impact on retained older workers, with no evidence of spillovers to coworkers. While the aggregate effect is limited, the adverse conseque …

Management of Traumatic Injury to the Left Foot in a 48-Year-Old Man: A Case Report.

Approaches to foot injury care depend on a range of clinical steps that promote proper healing and function. We present a case of a 48-year-old plumber who injured his left foot when a metal object fell on it at home. Initial management involved irrigation, suturing, antibiotics, analgesia, and a plain foot X-ray, which was normal. Follow-up at the Occupational Health Unit (OHU) addressed persistent swelling, pain, and numbness. Further evaluation ruled out a fracture, but the patient required extended sick leave and restrictions on weight-bearing tasks. He received nonsteroidal anti-inflammat…

Total or partial tonsillar resection (tonsillectomy or tonsillotomy) to change the quality of life for adults with recurrent or chronic tonsillitis: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Tonsillar surgery has been used for decades to treat recurrent and chronic tonsillitis in adults. Recurrent and chronic tonsillitis result in disturbing symptoms, treatment costs, sick leave, and impaired quality of life (QoL). Theoretically, removing all or part of the altered pathological palatal lymphoid tissue alleviates the symptoms and enhances the QoL. Whether this is true with total or partial tonsillar resection (tonsillectomy (TE) and tonsillotomy (TT), respectively) has not been reported in a randomised trial yet. METHODS: We conduct a multicentre, partly blinded, rando…

New Developments in the Use of Biologics and Other Modalities in the Management of Lateral Epicondylitis.

Lateral epicondylitis is a common source of elbow pain. Though it is often a self-limited condition, refractory lateral epicondylitis can lead to problems with activities of daily living and sometimes requires sick leave from work. Therefore prompt treatment is essential. Histopathologic studies have suggested that lateral epicondylitis is a tendinopathy, associated with apoptosis and autophagy, rather than a tendonitis associated with inflammation. Although corticosteroids have been used for short-term treatment, recent studies have suggested that they are not helpful and may even be harmful …

Cost-of-illness and quality of life in patients with ankylosing spondylitis at a tertiary hospital in Korea.

The objectives of this study were to estimate the cost-of-illness (COI) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in Korea and to evaluate the effects of socio-demographic and clinical factors on the COI and the HRQOL. Face-to-face interview surveys were taken from patients with AS at the Rheumatology Clinic of Seoul National University Hospital. Direct medical and non-medical costs, indirect costs (productivity loss due to job loss and sick leave), and deterioration of HRQOL in patients with AS were measured. Factors associated with COI and HRQOL …
