This study investigated the psychological differences between gynecological clinic attenders with either pelvic pain or infertility, or with both pelvic pain and infertility both before and after laparoscopic investigation with concurrent treatment. Routine psychiatric evaluations of 100 adult patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for acute leukemia were reviewed to examine the possible relationship of psychiatric and psychosocial factors to duration of survival following the procedure. As part of a larger study on recovery from myocardial infarction in a national sample of male cardiac patients, data was collected on slightly under 400 men and their wives over a 5-year period. This longitudinal data set was used to investigate the role of patient health cognitions and marital factors on long-term psychological response to the illness. The relationship of depression and the severity of medical illness to alexithymia was investigated in 75 medically ill patients seen in psychiatric consultation. Both depression and living alone predicted alexithymia but severity of medical illness was not related to an individual's alexithymic characteristics measured by the revised Schalling-Sifneos Scale. The implications of the findings are discussed in relationship to previous data regarding alexithymia in a psychiatric consultation population.

The hypothesis that panic disorder is a separate biological disease has attracted a great deal of controversy in recent years. One of the cornerstones of this theory is that panic attacks arise spontaneously, suggesting that the illness is generated by an autonomous physiological process. A number of cases are reported that illustrate Beck's theory that cognitive factors are central to the genesis of acute anxiety. Evidence for a developmental/cognitive theory of anxiety is discussed, and it is concluded that a purely biological model for panic disorder is inadequate.

Data from three separate quality of life studies of end-stage renal disease patients investigated the hypothesis that those patients who have previously experienced the failure of a transplanted kidney are characterized by lower levels of life quality than are patients who have not. Multivariate data analyses uniformly failed to support this hypothesis. Likely explanations for the discrepancy between these and other contradictory findings as well as clinical and research implications are presented.
