A rare case of a colon carcinoma that developed in a 50-year-old woman is documented. Histologically, the removed tumor was composed of two distinctive elements, i.e., well-differentiated papillary adenocarcinoma and choriocarcinoma. It was strongly suggested that the latter malignancy derived from the pre-existing colonic carcinoma through metaplastic proliferation. A very high human chorionic gonadotropin level was noted in the patient's serum obtained at the preoperative stage. Measurements of the resting pressure profile of the anorectum, recto-anal reflex and of rectal compliance (reservoir function of the rectum) were made in 24 normal subjects and 16 patients who had undergone low anterior resection for cancer of the sigmoid colon or upper half of the rectum. This report describes the medical and demographic characteristics of menopausal women in Taiwan in order to provide information for consideration during future healthcare planning. The medical and demographic data analyzed were taken from officially published materials of the Government of the Republic of China on Taiwan, our own studies, and those of other researchers. The occurrence of synchronous primary gynaecologic malignancies is a relatively common event. However, the occurrence of three different pelvic cancers is very rare. In this report, the authors describe the clinical, surgical, and pathological findings of a patient with synchronous primary malignancies of the fallopian tube, endometrium, and sigmoid colon. To the authors' knowledge, it is the first case described in the literature with such an association of primary synchronous cancers.

A comparative study was performed between plain abdominal films of 110 patients with neoplasms of the large bowel and 52 normal subjects for control. In neoplasms of the right colon the failed spontaneous visualization of caecum and ascendent colon or the direct recognization of lume's deformation allow us to suspect such a lesions in about 90% of the cases. Neoplasms of the other tracts of the large bowel may be suspected only when plain abdominal film demonstrates direct evidence of an obstruction: in about 25% of the cases.

RATIONALE: Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome (CCS) is an idiopathic, nonhereditary syndrome haracterized by gastrointestinal (GI) polyposis and ectodermal changes including alopecia, onychatrophia, and pigmentation. CCS colon polyps were previously considered to be benign neoplasms. However, serrated adenoma was reported to be associated with malignant neoplasms in some cases of gastric and colorectal carcinomas, and esophageal cancers. Patient 1 was admitted to our hospital because of left-upper abdominal pain caused by local recurrence with abdominal wall invasion.
