Atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy frequently coexist during early childhood and are increasingly linked through interactions within the gut-skin axis. We evaluated the clinical outcomes of an integrated nutritional and microbiome-oriented management strategy in children with food allergy-associated AD under real-world conditions. This prospective, two-center, real-world observational cohort study included 85 children (median age, 11 months) with AD diagnosed according to the Hanifin-Rajka criteria and confirmed IgE- and/or non-IgE-mediated food allergy. Participants received individualiz

Acne vulgaris is a chronic disease characterised by the appearance of eruptions such as whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, papules, and cysts. Among factors that cause acne vulgaris are the abnormal keratinisation of the sebaceous canal, bacterial colonisation (Cutibacterium acnes), increased sebum production, genotypic factors, and hormonal disorders. Treatment is often long and tedious, and can lead to a reduction in quality of life and social isolation. The intestinal microbiota is greatly important in the formation of acne lesions. It is also responsible for the proper immunity of the organ

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding mothers commonly experience nipple pain accompanied by radiating, stabbing or constant breast pain between feeds, sometimes associated with pink shiny nipple epithelium and white flakes of skin. Current guidelines diagnose these signs and symptoms as mammary candidiasis and stipulate antifungal medications.
AIM: This study reviews existing research into the relationship between Candida albicans and nipple and breast pain in breastfeeding women who have been diagnosed with mammary candidiasis; whether fluconazole is an effective treatment; and the presence of C. albic

A rich body of literature indicates that environmental factors interact with the human microbiome and influence its composition and functions contributing to the pathogenesis of diseases in distal sites of the body. This systematic review examines the scientific evidence on the effect of environmental toxicants, air pollutants and endocrine disruptors (EDCs), on compositional and diversity of human microbiota. Articles from PubMed, Embase, WoS and Google Scholar where included if they focused on human populations or the SHIME® model, and assessed the effects of air pollutants and EDCs on human

Recent studies suggest that gut and skin microbiota, immune cells, and inflammatory proteins may contribute to the development of Parkinson disease (PD). However, their causal relationships and underlying mediating mechanisms remain unclear. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis using publicly available genome-wide association study summary data to evaluate the causal relationships among 473 gut and 150 skin microbiota, 731 immune cell phenotypes, 91 inflammatory proteins, and PD. Sensitivity analyses and mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate robustness and explore

Understanding the microbiota of wild animals can contribute to the monitoring of population health or habitat changes. The skin microbiota of fallow deer remains poorly characterized and represents a gap in current veterinary microbiology research. The aim of this study was to analyse skin microbiota of fifteen clinically healthy fallow deer using next-generation sequencing. Genomic DNA was extracted from superficial skin swabs collected from three anatomical sites per individual (n = 45 samples) and sequenced targeting the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene using Illumina sequencing.

The ocular surface microbiome plays a critical role in maintaining ocular health, preventing infections, and regulating immune responses. Contact lens (CL) wear has been linked to alterations in microbial composition, potentially leading to dysbiosis and increased susceptibility to ocular infections. This review aims to summarize current evidence on the effects of CL use on the ocular microbiome and to discuss strategies to preserve microbial homeostasis. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for English-language human studies published between

Along with Helicobacter pylori infection, the gastric microbiota is hypothesized to modulate stomach cancer risk in susceptible individuals. Whole metagenomic shotgun sequencing (WMS) is a sequencing approach to characterize the microbiome with advantages over traditional culture and 16S rRNA sequencing including identification of bacterial and non-bacterial taxa, species/strain resolution, and functional characterization of the microbiota. In this study, we used WMS to survey the microbiome in extracted DNA from antral gastric biopsy samples from Colombian patients residing in the high-risk g

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Latent fingerprints (LFs) have been a cornerstone of forensic identification through conventional friction ridge pattern analysis; however, the microbial communities they harbor remain a largely untapped source of information. Estimation of the time-since-deposition (TsDp) of LFs is still an unresolved challenge in forensic science, as existing 2D and 3D imaging methodologies provide limited temporal resolution. This study investigated whether temporal shifts in LF-associated microbiota could potentially complement dating approaches via genetic analyses.
METHODS: LFs we

Chronic inflammatory skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis, are systemic immune-mediated disorders driven by dysregulated immune responses. The gut-skin axis is a bidirectional network linking intestinal microorganisms, their metabolites, and host immunity. It connects microbiome composition and function with systemic inflammation and cutaneous pathology, shaping disease-specific mechanisms such as Th2/IL-4/IL-13-mediated barrier dysfunction in AD and Th17/IL-23/IL-17-driven hyperproliferation in psoriasis. Microbiota-derived metabolites, including short-chain fatty aci

The gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a systemic regulator of host physiology, extending its influence to the skin. Microbial metabolites-including short-chain fatty acids, exopolysaccharides, β-glucuronidase, and S-equol-modulate key processes such as inflammation, estrogen metabolism, and cellular senescence. In melasma, a chronic hyperpigmentation disorder with inflammatory features, dysbiosis alters immunometabolic pathways that sustain disease persistence. Beneficial taxa such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium gene

Acne vulgaris is a widespread a chronic inflammatory dermatosis that affects millions of people around the world, which has a significant influence on patients' standard of living. The progression of this dermatosis results in the appearance of inflammatory and non-inflammatory changes, and, in severe cases, disfiguring scars and hyperpigmentation. The aetiopathogenesis of acne is complex. It involves a complex interaction of many different factors, both endo- and exogenous in their effect on the hair and sebaceous unit. Genetic predisposition, hormones, the skin and gut microbiome, psychologi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To systematically review current evidence on microbiota changes associated with dupilumab treatment across different anatomical sites in type 2 inflammatory diseases.
RECENT FINDINGS: Fifteen studies were included, comprising two randomized trials and thirteen observational studies, mostly in atopic dermatitis, with fewer data in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps and NSAID-exacerbated respiratory disease. The skin was the most frequently investigated site, followed by the sinonasal tract and gut. Across skin studies, dupilumab was consistently associated with reduced

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) affects 2-5% of the global population, with imbalances in the skin microbiome implicated in its development. This study assessed the impact of an oily suspension containing Lactobacillus crispatus P17631 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei I1688 (termed EUTOPLAC) on SD symptoms and the skin mycobiome-bacteriome modulation. 25 SD patients were treated with EUTOPLAC for a week. Symptom severity and skin mycobiome-bacteriome changes were measured at the start of the treatment (T0), after seven days (T8), and three weeks post-treatment (T28). Results indicated symptom impro…

Environmental factors that enhance regeneration are largely unknown. The immune system and microbiome are attributed roles in repairing and regenerating structure but their precise interplay is unclear. Here, we assessed the function of skin bacteria in wound healing and wound-induced hair follicle neogenesis (WIHN), a rare adult organogenesis model. WIHN levels and stem cell markers correlate with bacterial counts, being lowest in germ-free (GF), intermediate in conventional specific pathogen-free (SPF), and highest in wild-type mice, even those infected with pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus.

The skin microbiome differs with age, and understanding the relationship between the microbial balance and skin health is valuable in skin healthcare. In this study, we developed a quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) method using TaqMan MGB probes to measure the abundance of indigenous skin bacteria. Representative facial skin bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus aureus) were detected and quantified with high sensitivity using specific primer sets and probes. C. acnes was divided into two groups for qPCR analysis: Group 1, which included major acne-associ…

Staphylococcus aureus second immunoglobulin-binding protein (Sbi) is a unique type 2-promoting virulence factor that induces IL-33 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) release. This mechanism is essential for the development of S. aureus-induced eczema in the widely used NC/Tnd mouse model of human atopic dermatitis (AD). Microbiome shifts in AD suggest that microbiota could modulate the disease. We therefore sought to identify skin bacteria that attenuate S. aureus-induced IL-33/TSLP release from keratinocytes. Micrococcus luteus was unique among skin isolates in its ability to negate cyto

Yeasts of the genus, Malassezia, formerly known as Pityrosporum, are lipophilic yeasts, which are a part of the normal skin flora (microbiome). Malassezia colonize the human skin after birth and must therefore, as commensals, be normally tolerated by the human immune system. The Malassezia yeasts also have a pathogenic potential where they can, under appropriate conditions, invade the stratum corneum and interact with the host immune system, both directly but also through chemical mediators. The species distribution on the skin and the pathogenetic potential of the yeast varies between differe
