INTRODUCTION: Burkitt’s lymphoma is a non- Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma whose cranial location is extremely rare.
CLINICAL CASE: The case of a 35-year-old Peruvian man with a progressive parietal left cranial tumor is described. A biopsy with immunohistochemistry was performed for the diagnostic confirmation of Burkitt’s lymphoma. First-line outpatient treatment with CODOX-M/IVAC was initiated, however, he stopped attending his treatment for 2 months. He returns, he is shown progression of the disease and is treated with rituximab, ifosfamide carboplatin and etoposide. Does not respond satisfactor

PURPOSE: Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is difficult to diagnose due to a wide array of clinical presentations. It can be life threatening if not treated promptly. The objective of this study is to identify the various neck spaces involved in skull base osteomyelitis, correlate them with the possible source of infection and identify the related complications.
METHODS: Eighty nine consecutive either culture proven cases of skull base osteomyelitis, or culture negative cases with inflammation on histopathology responding to antibiotic therapy, presenting at a single non-government hospital in s…

BACKGROUND: The skull encompasses and houses one of the most important organs in the body-the brain-and like all tissues in the body, it is comprised of living cells that are constantly remodeling as this maintains the strength and homeostasis of the bone. In the present study, abnormal bone growth patterns were observed and the possible causes of said findings were investigated in multiple cadaver skulls dissected during head and neck anatomy courses at Detroit Mercy Dental over the past year. There are many factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic, with differences in stimulation to the skull r…

The crocodylians are ectothermic semi-aquatic vertebrates which are assessed to have evolved from endothermic terrestrial forms during the M … d the temperature above a set of representative skin areas in order to draw comparisons between the skull, the osteoderms, and the rest of the body parts which present either none or residual dermal ossification. We computed the data after the specimens were successively laid in different stereotyped environmental conditions which involved significant v …

BACKGROUND: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a common herpesvirus infection that can result in acute varicella/chickenpox, as well as delayed activation in herpes zoster/shingles. Ramsay-Hunt syndrome is a rare presentation of VZV reactivation, involving 1% of cases and resulting in lesion formation along the seventh cranial nerve distribution. We report the first case of a patient who presented with acute calvarial osteomyelitis after VZV reactivation and Propionibacterium acnes suprainfection.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old man with a history of VZV presented with a 6-month history of

Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen and an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of osteomyelitis caused by C. neoformans in a liver transplant recipient who presented with a headache and scalp lump after sustaining mild head trauma. There was no evidence of central nervous system involvement or dissemination. This is the first known case report of isolated cryptococcal osteomyelitis in a liver transplant recipient.

OBJECTIVE: The indications of routine skull X-rays after mild head trauma are still in discussion, and the clinical management of a child with a skull fracture remains controversial. The aim of our retrospective study was to evaluate our diagnostic and clinical management of children with skull fractures following minor head trauma.
METHODS: We worked up the medical history of all consecutive patients with a skull fracture treated in our hospital from January 2009 to October 2014 and investigated all skull X-rays in our hospital during this period.
RESULTS: In 5217 skull radiographies, 66 sk…

Patients with Apert syndrome have bilateral coronal craniosynostosis, along with a distinguishing feature of their many deformity, called tower skull. Surgical correction of this deformity is the mainstay of treatment. We describe 3 patients molded top skull after front bone osteotomy orbital bar advancement. This successfully restricted growth of their top skull while allowing growth in other dimensions. Utilization of top-skull molding after cranial surgery shows promise of satisfaction in this setting.

Ollier’s syndrome, a variant of multiple enchondromatosis, is a rare disease with an estimated prevalence of 1/100,000, characterized by multiple enchondromas, asymmetrically involving small bones of the hands and feet, especially the proximal phalanges. Intracranial enchondromas, such as those arising from the skull base are extremely rare. Herein, we report a 25-year-old female, known case of Ollier’s disease, presenting with right eyelid ptosis and visual disturbance. Brain MRI revealed a skull base tumour suspicious to enchondroma followed by trans-sphenoidal resection. Histologic examinat…

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Various intranasal landmarks have been described to aid in the localization of the natural sphenoid sinus ostium. The objectives of this study are to identify the ostium location relative to the skull base and assess the relationships between the location of the ostium and sphenoid disease or pneumatization pattern.
DESIGN: Descriptive study.
METHODS: Consecutive Xoran Mini-CAT (Ann Arbor, MI) scans of patients with no history of sinus surgery (n = 202) were evaluated. The natural sphenoid ostium was identified in axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. Distances from the…

We explored the morphological organization of the skull within Crocodylidae, analyzing functional and phylogenetic interactions between its 2 constituent functional modules: the rostrum and the postrostrum. We used geometric morphometrics to identify localized shape changes, focusing on the differences between the major clades of the crown-group Crocodylia: Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae. We used published bite performance data to correlate rostral function with postrostral morphology. The skull modules appear more integrated within Alligatoridae than within Crocodyliade. Phylogenetic effects …

The brain originates relatively early in development from differentiated ectoderm that forms a hollow tube and takes on an exceedingly complex shape with development. The skull is made up of individual bony elements that form from neural crest- and mesoderm-derived mesenchyme that unite to provide support and protection for soft tissues and spaces of the head. The meninges provide a protective and permeable membrane between brain and skull. Across evolutionary and developmental time, dynamic changes in brain and skull shape track one another so that their integration is evidenced in two struct…

The authors report a case of paraganglioma of the skull base presenting as nasal polyps. A 29-year-old patient presented with epistaxis and was found to have nasal polyps. The patient underwent a nasal polypectomy. After pathology showed an unusual appearance, the mass was subsequently excised endoscopically using radiofrequency coblation, and it was found to be originating from the skull base. The diagnosis was made using a combination of clinical findings, radiology, and histopathology examination. It is important to consider paraganglioma in the differential diagnosis of unusual tumors of t…
