Analysis of hot trends in research on the association between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency. Numerous studies suggest that vitamin D is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The objective is to visualize the research hotspots and evolution trends of the correlation between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease by using multivariate statistics and social network analysis techniques and to compare adult research with that of children in this field. METHODS: (Vitamin D [MeSH Major Topic]) AND (cardiovascular disease [MeSH Major Topic]) were retrieved from the PubMed database by time period. The bibli…

Fetal functional connectivity prospectively associates with autistic traits in toddlerhood.

Accumulating evidence from neuroimaging studies has implicated widespread disruptions in brain connectivity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with altered connectivity patterns reported as early as infancy. However, it remains unexplored whether functional connectivity differences are evident prior to birth in the brain of fetuses who will later exhibit autistic traits in early childhood. In this study, we leveraged a longitudinal sample of 62 children with both quality-assured fetal brain resting-state MRI data and a parent-report measure of autistic traits at age 3 years. Enrichment analysi

Association of Social Capital With Tuberculosis: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Analytical Study in South India.

BACKGROUND: Social capital denotes the relationships, networks, norms and values in the community. A high level of social capital positively improves health through a supportive social system. Illnesses affect health and social relationships. One such disease is tuberculosis (TB), known for its social stigma. India has the highest burden of morbidity and mortality due to TB. The assessment of social capital would highlight the importance of a supportive environment in reducing the disease burden and bringing better treatment outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional exploratory analytical study wa

The Factors Associated With Nonuse of Social Media or Video Communications to Connect With Friends and Family During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Older Adults: Web-Based Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies have enabled social connection during prolonged periods of physical distancing and travel restrictions throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. These solutions may exclude older adults, who are at higher risk for social isolation, loneliness, and severe outcomes if infected with SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated factors associated with nonuse of social media or video communications to connect with friends and family among older adults during the pandemic's first wave. METHODS: A web-based, cross-sectional survey was administered to members of a national

Evidence of health inequity in child survival: spatial and Bayesian network analyses of stillbirth rates in 194 countries.

Estimated at 2.6 million annually, stillbirths worldwide have stayed alarmingly high, in contrast to neonatal and under-five mortality rates. It is a neglected public health challenge globally, with less attention to its social determinants. We examined spatial patterns of country-level stillbirth rates and determined the influence of social determinants of health on spatial patterns of stillbirth rates. We also estimated probabilistic relationships between stillbirth rates and significant determinants from the spatial analysis. Using country-level aggregated data from the United Nations datab

The Role of Social Capital in African Americans' Attempts to Reduce and Quit Cocaine Use.

BACKGROUND: Research examining substance users' recovery has focused on individual-level outcomes while paying limited attention to the contexts within which individuals are embedded, and the social processes involved in recovery. OBJECTIVES: This paper examines factors underlying African American cocaine users' decisions to reduce or quit cocaine use and uses practice theory to understand how lifestyle changes and shifts in social networks facilitate access to the capital needed to change cocaine use patterns. METHODS: The study, an in-depth analysis of substance-use life history interviews

Symptom network structure across stigma subgroups in maintenance hemodialysis: a latent profile and network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients commonly experience stigma during long-term treatment, yet the characteristics of their subgroups and the associated patterns with symptom burden remain unclear. This study aimed to identify latent subgroups of stigma among MHD patients and depict the symptom network structure of each subgroup. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 558 MHD patients from two hospitals between March and December 2024. Stigma was assessed using the Social Impact Scale (SIS), symptom burden was assessed using the Modified Dialysis Symptom Index (DSI), subg

Bridging social capital among Facebook users and COVID-19 cases growth in Arizona.

Social capital is an important social determinant of health, more specifically bridging social capital, which connects individuals and communities across societal divides. This article reports on the findings of a study about the relationship between bridging social capital and COVID-19 infection trends within the state of Arizona from October 2020 to November 2021. Economic connectedness (EC), derived from Facebook friendship connections, served as a measure of aggregated bridging social capital among residents in each ZCTA (ZIP code tabulation area). Analysis of 192 ZCTAs in Arizona revealed

Understanding the Psychosocial Effects of WES Test Results on Parents of Children with Rare Diseases.

The use of whole exome sequencing (WES) for diagnostics of children with rare genetic diseases raises questions about best practices in genetic counselling. While a lot of attention is now given to pre-test counselling procedures for WES, little is known about how parents experience the (positive, negative, or inconclusive) WES results in daily life. To fill this knowledge gap, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with parents of 15 children who underwent WES analysis. WES test results, like results from other genetic tests, evoked relief as well as worries, irrespective of the type

Social support in cyberspace: a content analysis of communication within a Huntington's disease online support group.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder, characterized by a progressive degeneration of the brain. Due to the nature of the symptoms, the genetic element of the disease, and the fact that there is no cure, HD patients and those in their support network often experience considerable stress and anxiety. With an expansion in Internet access, individuals affected by HD have new opportunities for information retrieval and social support. The aim of this study is to examine the provision of social support in messages posted to a HD online support group bulletin board. METHODS:

Toxicity on Social Media During the 2022 Mpox Public Health Emergency: Quantitative Study of Topical and Network Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Toxicity on social media, encompassing behaviors such as harassment, bullying, hate speech, and the dissemination of misinformation, has become a pressing social concern in the digital age. Its prevalence intensifies during periods of social crises and unrest, eroding a sense of safety and community. Such toxic environments can adversely impact the mental well-being of those exposed and further deepen societal divisions and polarization. The 2022 mpox outbreak, initially called "monkeypox" but later renamed to reduce stigma and address societal concerns, provides a relevant context

Psychological and neural correlates of social affect and cognition in narcissism: A multimethod study of self-reported traits, experiential states, and behavioral and brain indicators.

"Lack of empathy" is a diagnostic criterion of narcissism, but the nature of interpersonal functioning in narcissism is still being debated. Both, empathy and narcissism, are multidimensional constructs, and their relation might depend upon contextual factors. We investigated social affect and cognition in narcissism spanning self-reported traits and experiential states (Ecological Momentary Assessment) as well as behavioral and brain indicators (task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging). N = 140 individuals were selected to cover the full dimensional range of grandiose and vulnerabl

[Social jetlag: possibilities of micronutrient support].

The concept of social jetlag refers to asynchronous communication of a person's biological clock with tempo of modern living, which occurs mainly as a result of intensive work. At the core of social jetlag is sleep deprivation or chronic sleep restriction caused by social factors: pervasive use of electronic solutions and networks, intensive round the clock operation, chronic diseases. The aim of the work was to determine vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients, the availability of which is important for supporting the organism in case of circadian rhythm sleep disorders and sleep restric

Epidemic modeling in complex realities.

In our global world, the increasing complexity of social relations and transport infrastructures are key factors in the spread of epidemics. In recent years, the increasing availability of computer power has enabled both to obtain reliable data allowing one to quantify the complexity of the networks on which epidemics may propagate and to envision computational tools able to tackle the analysis of such propagation phenomena. These advances have put in evidence the limits of homogeneous assumptions and simple spatial diffusion approaches, and stimulated the inclusion of complex features and het

BERT4FCA: A method for bipartite link prediction using formal concept analysis and BERT.

Link prediction in bipartite networks finds practical applications in various domains, including friend recommendation in social networks and chemical reaction prediction in metabolic networks. Recent studies have highlighted the potential for link prediction by maximal bi-cliques, which is a structural feature within bipartite networks that can be extracted using formal concept analysis (FCA). Although previous FCA-based methods for bipartite link prediction have achieved good performance, they still have the problem that they cannot fully capture the information of maximal bi-cliques.
