Food insecurity and postnatal depression: the mediating effect of perceived social support among women in Khayelitsha, South Africa.

PURPOSE: Understanding the mechanisms through which poverty influences perinatal depression can provide insight into how to develop interventions to improve maternal mental health. To address this question, we aim to estimate indirect effects of important mediators on the causal relationship between food insecurity and symptoms of postnatal depression. METHODS: We used data from the control arm of the Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental health - South Africa (AFFIRM-SA) trial that included pregnant women with perinatal depression. Interventional effects (used for models that may

Nonverbal social behaviors of patients with bipolar mania during interactions with virtual humans.

It has been proposed that positive emotional biases could make bipolar manic (BM) patients maintain abnormally approaching behaviors during social interactions. To test this hypothesis, we measured interpersonal distance (IPD) and gaze angle of BM patients and normal controls (NCs) during social interaction in immersive virtual environment. Overall, IPDs of BM patients (n = 20) were greater than those of normal controls (n = 20). The IPD difference was even greater between NCs and BM patients with psychotic features (n = 11) than those without psychotic features (n = 9). Regardless of the pres

Elevated testosterone and prosocial behavior in female patients with borderline personality disorder independent of social exclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable relationships and fear of abandonment. Earlier studies suggest that patients with BPD are highly sensitive to social exclusion and show deficits in trust and cooperation. The hormone testosterone influences such prosocial behavior and regulates aggressive and caring behavior. Previous studies show elevated testosterone levels in female patients with BPD at baseline and after psychosocial stress, while results after social exclusion are missing. METHOD: We investigated the effects of social exclusion on prosocial behavior (

The Value of Social Determinants of Health Needs Assessments in Primary Care.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) such as income, housing, food security, education, transportation, and healthcare access, exert a far greater influence on health outcomes compared with traditional clinical care alone. This policy commentary argues for the routine integration of SDOH needs assessments into primary care to enable more comprehensive, equitable, and effective patient care. By screening for social drivers, providers can identify non-medical obstacles to treatment adherence, connect patients with community resources, and develop realistic care plans tailored to individual circu

Disability and dignity-enabling home environments.

In Canada where long-term care is primarily oriented to elderly persons and affordable accessible housing is limited, younger disabled adults may be living in circumstances that do not meet their health needs and contribute to their social exclusion. The purpose of this study was to undertake an ethical analysis of what constitute an 'adequate' home environment for adults with significant mobility disabilities. An integrated design was used that combined qualitative interviews with normative ethical analysis in an iterative process. Twenty interviews with 19 participants were conducted in Onta

Attachment Disorders.

The ability to form attachments with other human beings is an essential skill that typically begins early in life. The parent/caregiver-child relationship is the first crucial relationship that an infant forms, and the health of this relationship has a profound effect on the child's social and emotional development. Children who form secure relationships with their parent or other primary caregiver have fewer internalizing and externalizing behaviors, are more socially competent, and have better-quality friendships. Conversely, children with attachment disorders exhibit a varying capacity to f

Higher earnings, bursting trains and exhausted bodies: the creation of travelling psychosis in post-reform China.

This paper examines the biomedical construction of "travelling psychosis" (TP), a contested psychiatric diagnosis pertaining to a severe mental disturbance that occurs among migrant workers who travel long distance in China's overcrowded trains. Although TP can produce substantial psychiatric morbidity, it is also a socially constructed entity that serves social uses. By subscribing to a ritualistic model of validation and by invoking the rhetoric of scientific authority, Chinese psychiatrists who created TP have been able to accomplish such goals as legitimating its forensic function, securin

The outcome in children with childhood autism and Asperger syndrome originally diagnosed as psychotic. A 30-year follow-up study of subjects hospitalized as children.

This follow-up study reports data on 18 children fulfilling the ICD-10 criteria for childhood autism (n = 9) and Asperger syndrome (n = 9). In connection with the present study the original child psychiatric records were reassessed according to the ICD-10 criteria. The children were followed over a period of 30 years. The mean age at the time of study was 38 years. The results show that in adulthood the autistic patients had a poorer outcome than children with Asperger syndrome as regards education, employment, autonomy, marriage, reproduction and the need for continuing medical and institutio

[Transphobia in Brazil in the context of the pandemic: perceptions and actions of political groups that defend the trans population].

The COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil was marked by a set of measures to contain the virus, which had specific repercussions in different social groups, especially the most vulnerable, such as transvestites and transgender individuals. The aim of the present article was to investigate the particularities of transphobia in Brazil in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the actions of organizations and political groups in this scenario. The novelty and relevance of this study is evident by the scarcity of investigations focused on understanding the transphobic phenomenon in the context of a

Disparities in Diabetes in Pregnancy and the Role of Social Determinants of Health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The rates of diabetes in pregnancy (type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes) are increasing. Diabetes in pregnancy is associated with increased risk for maternal and neonatal complications. Certain groups are disproportionately affected by these complications and this paper reviews the data about disparities in diabetes in pregnancy and explores the social determinants of health (SDoH) underlying these disparities. RECENT FINDINGS: Rates of diagnosis of gestational diabetes and pregestational diabetes are higher in racial and ethnic minority groups and people with socioeco

A quantitative exploratory evaluation of the circle of security-parenting program with mothers in residential substance-abuse treatment.

Maternal substance abuse is a risk factor for child maltreatment, child attachment insecurity, and maladaptive social information processing. The aim of this study was to conduct a quantitative exploratory evaluation of the effectiveness of an attachment-based parent program, Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P; G. Cooper, K. Hoffman, & B. Powell, 2009), with a community sample of 15 mothers in residential treatment for substance abuse. Participants attended nine weekly group sessions and were given three measures at pretest and posttest: the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (J.J. Gross & O.P.

Examination of the proposed relationships between cyclic menstruation and human reproduction.

Increased societal food security has enabled frequent ovulation based on women's body fat levels remaining above the fertility threshold. The consequential cyclical menstruation in non-pregnant women constitutes a large female health and welfare issue. This examination of the various roles proposed for menstruation could not detect an essential biological role, whether in the removal of un-implanted embryos or the conditioning of the endometrium against oxidative stress. Neither is menstruation a prerequisite for the regeneration of the uterine endometrium. Menstruation and foetal placental de

Invisible lives: understanding the food insecurity and food-seeking behaviour among Bangladeshi undocumented migrants amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Undocumented migrants often face significant socio-economic and health vulnerabilities, which are further intensified during global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Among these challenges, food insecurity emerges as a critical concern, particularly for migrants lacking legal status, social protection, and access to basic services. This study examines the prevalence of food insecurity and food-seeking behaviour-related coping mechanisms among Bangladeshi undocumented migrants living in Malaysia, Iraq, and Libya during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Twenty-seven undocumented B
