Social Isolation and Social Support Influence Health Service Utilisation and Survival after a Cardiovascular Disease Event: A Systematic Review.

Both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and social health carry high health and economic burdens. We undertook a systematic review to investigate the association between social isolation, low social support, and loneliness with health service utilisation and survival after a CVD event among people living in Australia and New Zealand. Four electronic databases were systematically searched for the period before June 2020. Two reviewers undertook the title/abstract screen. One reviewer undertook a full-text screen and data extraction. A second author checked data extraction. Of 756 records, 25 papers m

Practice Parameter for the Assessment and Treatment of Children and Adolescents With Reactive Attachment Disorder and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder.

This Practice Parameter is a revision of a previous Parameter addressing reactive attachment disorder that was published in 2005. It reviews the current status of reactive attachment disorder (RAD) and disinhibited social engagement disorder (DESD) with regard to assessment and treatment. Attachment is a central component of social and emotional development in early childhood, and disordered attachment is defined by specific patterns of abnormal social behavior in the context of "insufficient care" or social neglect. Assessment requires direct observation of the child in the context of his or

Intergenerational Social Mobility and Smoking Trajectories in Middle-Aged Adults - The French CONSTANCES Cohort Study (2012-2020).

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking remains a public health challenge, particularly among low-income populations. Beyond individuals' own socioeconomic position, their family background and the type of social trajectory they experienced, could also be related to smoking behaviors as tobacco use starts generally in adolescence. In the present study, we tested the association between intergenerational social mobility and individuals' smoking trajectories up to midlife. METHODS: Using data from the CONSTANCES cohort, a French longitudinal population-based study, we applied Group-Based Trajectory Model

Social Determinants of Health and Preclinical Glycemic Control in Newly Diagnosed First-Episode Psychosis Patients.

BACKGROUND: The abnormally high incidence of disorders of glucose metabolism (DGM) in psychotic-spectrum disorders (PSD) has often been attributed to the side effects of antipsychotics and unhealthy lifestyles. The influence of social determinants of health has been largely ignored, despite ample evidence linking social adversity with both PSD and DGM. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of well-established social determinants of health on preclinical levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in a sample of first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients. METHODS: In a sample of newly admitt

Self-reported sensory processing and social participation across adult ADHD symptom groups.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory processing differences are increasingly recognized in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but their relationship with social participation remains understudied. This study examined sensory processing and social participation across three adult ADHD symptom groups and evaluated the association between sensory processing and social participation. METHODS: This cross-sectional online survey included 209 adults aged 21-65 years, categorized into self-reported ADHD diagnosis (n = 91), elevated ADHD symptoms without a reported diagnosis (n = 66), and l

Perspectives on standardized screening for social needs in primary care: a qualitative study.

AIM: This study aimed to explore patient perspectives on standardized screening for social needs within the context of primary care in Canada. BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health significantly influence patient health outcomes. While standardized screening for patient social needs has gained momentum, patient perspectives on the utility of said screening, particularly within the Canadian context, remains underexplored. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants aged 18 and older (n = 195), recruited from a larger multi-site study, using purposive maximum-varia

Measurement issues in research on social support and health.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aims were: (1) to identify methodological problems that may explain the inconsistencies and contradictions in the research evidence on social support and health, and (2) to validate a frequently used measure of social support in order to determine whether or not it could be used in multivariate analyses of population data in research on social support and health. DESIGN AND METHODS: Secondary analysis of data collected in a cross sectional survey of a multistage cluster sample of the population of the United States, designed to study relationships in behavioural, social s

Morbidity and mortality following bone marrow transplantation: predictive utility of pre-BMT affective functioning, compliance, and social support stability.

This study investigated the utility of 3 pretransplant psychological variables (affective functioning, compliance, social support stability) in predicting subsequent bone marrow transplantation (BMT) health outcomes. The pre-BMT psychological evaluations of 92 BMT recipients were coded along the specified psychological dimensions and used to predict post-BMT survival status and health-related quality of life. Data analyses showed that, in addition to medical risk status (low) and quality of the marrow graft (histocompatible), higher levels of pre-BMT affective functioning and social support st

The Protective Effect of Prenatal Social Support on Infant Adiposity in the First 18 Months of Life.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prenatal social support was associated with infant adiposity in the first 18 months of life in a low-income, Hispanic sample, known to be at high risk of early child obesity. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a longitudinal analysis of 262 low-income, Hispanic mother-infant pairs in the control group of the Starting Early child obesity prevention trial. Prenatal social support was measured using an item from the Maternal Social Support Index. We used multilevel modeling to predict weight-for-length z-score trajectories from birth to age 18 months and logistic regressi

Loneliness trajectories and predictors in Spain: Results from the Spanish longitudinal study on aging and health (Edad con Salud).

BACKGROUND: In recent years, loneliness has been recognized as a public health problem, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to identify groups of people with different trajectories of loneliness, and to explore potential determinants (sociodemographic, social, psychological, and health-related) associated with these trajectories. METHODS: In this 12-year longitudinal study, we analyzed data on 4537 Spanish adults from a nationwide representative survey. A growth mixture modeling approach was used to identify different loneliness trajectories and logistic regressions to explo

Treatment-seeking for social anxiety disorder in a general outpatient psychiatry setting.

Many individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) seek treatment principally for another psychiatric disorder, but when directly asked, a majority of these individuals also desire treatment for SAD. Several reasons may exist for why individuals with SAD do not seek treatment for it, such as the severity or functional impairment related to SAD. The aim of the current study was to examine factors related to SAD severity, impairment, and comorbidity, to gain a better understanding of what factors may be related to treatment-seeking for SAD. In 819 psychiatric outpatients with SAD, initial resul

Socially vulnerable patients are more likely to fail outpatient management of symptomatic cholelithiasis.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic cholelithiasis is a common surgical problem, with many patients requiring multiple gallstone-related emergency department (ED) visits before cholecystectomy. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) identifies vulnerable patient populations. This study aimed to assess the association between social vulnerability and outpatient management of symptomatic cholelithiasis. METHODS: Patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis-related ED visits were identified within our health system from 2016 to 2022. Clinical outcomes data were merged with SVI census track data, which consist of

Neural sensitivity to peer hierarchies: Risks for depressive symptoms for low status adolescents.

Popularity is increasingly salient and impactful in adolescence, and unpopular youth are at significantly greater risk of experiencing depressive symptoms. However, adolescents can vary in their neural sensitivity to social stimuli, such that some adolescents may be more impacted by social status than others. We examined whether adolescents' neural sensitivity to popular and unpopular peers moderates the extent that their own social status is related to trajectories of depressive symptoms across 5 years (6th-10th grades). During an fMRI scan, adolescents from the southeastern United States (n …

Predictors of Mental Health Recovery in Homeless Adults with Mental Illness.

For people with mental illness, experiences of homelessness can complicate mental health recovery processes. This study used longitudinal data from a randomized controlled trial of housing first (HF) to examine predictors of recovery among homeless people with mental illness. Findings showed that health and community predictors were most strongly associated with mental health recovery. Receipt of HF did not have any effect on changes in recovery scores at follow-up. Overall, the findings suggest that interventions aimed at preventing chronic homelessness, strengthening social networks and comm

Loss of social independence in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2: a follow-up study using a national registry in Japan.

BACKGROUND: For patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), maintaining an independent state of living is important. The present study aimed to examine the loss of social independence (i.e., a status that patients can work and go to school) and its contributing factors in patients with NF2 using data from a national registry in Japan. METHODS: This longitudinal study used a registry database containing information on patients with NF2 who had submitted initial claims to receive medical expense subsidies between 2004 and 2010. Patients with "employed," "studying," and "housekeeping" categori

Associations of Social Vulnerability and Race-Ethnicity With Gastrointestinal Cancers in the United States.

BACKGROUND: National social determinant of health (SDoH) studies on gastrointestinal cancers (GIC) have observed single GIC-types for surgery but not across all GIC-types, non-surgical treatments outcomes, or mortality. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), a validated large-data SDoH-tool, quantifiably characterizes the interrelatedness of SDoH-impact through dynamic, region-contextualized measures. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study assessed GIC patients (20+ years) between 2013 and 2017 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for total and subcomponent so

Socioeconomic status is associated with striatal dopamine D2/D3 receptors in healthy volunteers but not in cocaine abusers.

Positron emission tomography (PET) studies in animals and humans have shown that social status is associated with striatal dopamine D2/D3 receptor (D2/D3R) availability. That is, higher social hierarchy and higher scores on questionnaires assessing social status correlated positively with striatal D2/D3R availability in animals and humans respectively. Furthermore, subordinate monkeys were vulnerable to cocaine self-administration, suggesting that alternations in social hierarchy can change D2/D3R availability and vulnerability to cocaine use. Here, we investigated whether socioeconomic status…

Social Frailty Moderates the Association Between Gender and Life Satisfaction: Evidence from a Large-Scale Survey Among Indian Older Adults.

This study examined the role of gender, social frailty, depressive symptoms, and cognitive impairment on life satisfaction, along with the interaction effect of social frailty between gender and life satisfaction. We used the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) Wave 1 data and considered 23,345 older adults. Multivariate models, ordinary least squares regression, and moderation analyses were conducted. The higher levels of social frailty status depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment reduced life satisfaction. The interaction models revealed that the relationship between gender and
