The genetic and neuroanatomical basis of social dysfunction: lessons from neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common genetic condition associated with cognitive and social dysfunction as well as abnormal brain structure. The pathophysiology underlying social dysfunction in NF1 is poorly understood. Here, we investigate for the first time whether there is a broad deficit of social cognition in NF1 and explore the neural correlates for these deficits. Twenty-nine adults with NF1 and 30 controls were administered an ecologically based test of social cognition, The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT), to identify deficits in emotion recognition and sarcasm detect

Spatio-temporal dynamics of ingroup interactions in macaques.

When sharing a space with others, many species including humans evolved a compromise regulating occupancy influenced by social determinants. For example, students in a classroom tend to sit close to their friends, keeping the same spots across days, revealing the social structure in the classroom. This place preference suggests that factors such as social hierarchy and affiliation can shape space utilization, contrasting with random walk models of agents moving at random in any given direction. Here, we asked whether spatial occupancy of macaques within two unisex groups of four individuals, r…

Borderline personality disorder and social connectedness: A systematic review.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a debilitating disorder characterized by deficits in social connectedness, which is a multifaceted construct with structural (i.e., the number, diversity, or frequency of social relationships), functional (i.e., the actual or perceived resources relationships provide), and quality (i.e., the positive and negative aspects of social relationships) elements (Holt-Lunstad, 2018). However, the literature is sparse and lacks integration regarding which specific elements of social connectedness are deficient in BPD and why. This systematic review synthesized t

Latent variable model for suicide risk in relation to social capital and socio-economic status.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence on the association between suicide outcomes (ideation, attempts, self-harm) and social capital. This paper investigates such associations using a structural equation model based on health survey data, and allowing for both individual and contextual risk factors. METHODS: Social capital and other major risk factors for suicide, namely socioeconomic status and social isolation, are modelled as latent variables that are proxied (or measured) by observed indicators or question responses for survey subjects. These latent scales predict suicide risk in the struc

Institutional time and collective behavior: end-of-week school absenteeism as a social pattern.

This study examines end-of-week school absenteeism as a temporally structured social phenomenon shaped by institutional time arrangements and shared social expectations. Using a mixed-methods design, the research draws on data from 411 teachers, students, and parents across several regions in Saudi Arabia. Quantitative analysis using the Relative Importance Index (RII) and qualitative thematic analysis identified eleven interrelated factors influencing absenteeism, including cumulative weekly fatigue, the organization of the school week, socially coordinated absences, digital communication pra

How central and connected am I in my family? Bridging and bonding social capital in family configurations of young adults with psychiatric disorders.

AIMS: This article explores the structures of relational resources that individuals with psychiatric disorders get from their family configurations using the concept of social capital. METHODS: The research is based on a sample of 54 individuals with psychiatric disorders and behavioural problems, and a comparison sample of 54 individuals without a clinical record matched to the clinical respondents for age and sex. Standard measures of social capital from social network methods are applied on family configurations of individuals from both samples. Differences are tested by variance analysis.

Joubert syndrome gene fam149b1 homolog, xbx-4 , is required for multiple sensory behaviors.

Many cells require cilia to receive environmental signals. Mutations in the ciliary gene fam149b1 result in the ciliopathy Joubert syndrome. The C. elegans homolog of fam149b1 , xbx-4 , is required for normal cilium structure. We found that loss of XBX-4 hinders multiple cilium-mediated behaviors. xbx-4 mutants display mild defects in male mating and nose touch behaviors and dramatic changes in social feeding. Unexpectedly, xbx-4 mutants increased reversal behavior in response to ethanol, a control stimulus used in olfactory assays. Variation in the magnitude of phenotypes for different neuron

Comparison of features of social problem-solving scripts across three groups: educable intellectually disabled, socially poorly adapted, and socially well-adapted students.

The aim of this research was to compare the features of social problem-solving scripts across groups of students with different social problem-solving abilities, based on dynamic memory theory. 54 (32 girls/22 boys) educable intellectually disabled students, 58 (32 girls/26 boys) socially poorly adapted students, and 50 (28 girls/22 boys) socially well-adapted students participated. The average ages for educable intellectually disabled, poorly adapted, and well-adapted students were 13.9 yr. (SD = 1.7), 11.1 yr. (SD = .6), and 11 yr. (SD = .4), respectively. A semi-structured interview was des

SPREAD, a framework and open-source R toolbox to quantify behavioural contagion.

Behavioural contagion, when one individual's behaviour increases the likelihood of similar behaviours in others, is a fundamental dimension of social interaction, yet its empirical quantification remains methodologically challenging. Distinguishing contagion from coincidental co-occurrence, resolving contagion across continuous latencies rather than within fixed windows, accounting for behavioural base rates, and incorporating social structure require integrated analytical solutions. We present SPREAD, a conceptual and statistical framework implemented as an open-source R toolbox for quantifyi…

The Good, the Bad, and the Language: Capturing Implicit Social Evaluation of Personality Traits via the Fill‑Mask Association Test.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether linguistic evaluation of personality traits-the association of trait words with good versus bad in natural language-constitutes a diffuse halo or is selectively amplified for dimensions central to social functioning. METHOD: Using the Fill-Mask Association Test (FMAT), the present study extracted log probability ratios (LPR) of good vs. bad from 12 BERT models across three sentence contexts for 733 personality adjectives. These LPR scores were compared with human normative ratings (valence, social desirability, and observability) and with Big Five st

Neural signatures of natural behaviour in socializing macaques.

Our understanding of the neurobiology of primate behaviour largely derives from artificial tasks in highly controlled laboratory settings, overlooking most natural behaviours that primate brains evolved to produce1-3. How primates navigate the multidimensional social relationships that structure daily life4 and shape survival and reproductive success5 remains largely unclear at the single-neuron level. Here we combine ethological analysis, computer vision and wireless recording technologies to identify neural signatures of natural behaviour in unrestrained, socially interacting pairs of rhesus

The interactive effects of psychosocial stress and diet composition on health in primates.

Social disadvantage and diet composition independently impact myriad dimensions of health. They are closely entwined, as social disadvantage often yields poor diet quality, and may interact to fuel differential health outcomes. This paper reviews effects of psychosocial stress and diet composition on health in nonhuman primates and their implications for aging and human health. We examined the effects of social subordination stress and Mediterranean versus Western diet on multiple systems. We report that psychosocial stress and Western diet have independent and additive adverse effects on hypo

Latent dimensions of social anxiety disorder: A re-evaluation of the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN).

The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN; Connor et al., 2000) is a well-validated instrument for assessing severity of social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, evaluations of its factor structure have produced inconsistent results and this aspect of the scale requires further study. Primary care patients with SAD (N=397) completed the SPIN as part of baseline assessment for the Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management study (Roy-Byrne et al., 2010). These data were used for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis of the SPIN. A 3-factor model provided the best fit for the data and factors wer

Utility of fear survey schedule with Australian samples of anxiety disorder patients.

The Fear Survey Schedule (FSS) has been widely used in clinical settings for the assessment of anxiety disorders yet its reliability and validity is still in doubt. This paper reports the factor structure and the validity of the FSS using 130 agoraphobics with panic attacks, 98 phobics and 108 non-patient controls. The results show that a clear 6-factor solution can be derived from the FSS and this accounts for 46% of the variance. The 6 factors are (1) agoraphobia, (2) fear of small animals, (3) social anxiety, (4) negative social evaluation fears, (5) fear of bodily harm and (6) injury and f

Caregiver-reported social impacts in down syndrome regression disorder.

BACKGROUND: Down Syndrome Regression Disorder (DSRD) is an acute neurocognitive regression in individuals with Down syndrome (DS), causing a profound loss of acquired skills. DSRD increases demands on caregivers, to sleep disturbances, financial distress, and negative impacts on caregiver-reported social connections and perceived social support. The goal of this study was to characterize the caregiver-reported impacts of DSRD on social relationships by comparing their experiences to those of caregivers of individuals with DS and other neurological disorders (DSN). DESIGN/METHODS: This is a na
