Buffering the impact of childhood adversity: moderated moderation effects of mindfulness and psychological capital on social functioning among women in Kerala.

Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences are well-known risk factors that impair adult social functioning. Internal psychological strengths, such as mindfulness and psychological capital (PsyCap), may buffer these impacts among adult women in Kerala, India. However, studies exploring the role of these resources remain scarce and underexplored. Objective: The present study explored the moderating effect of mindfulness and PsyCap in the association between ACEs and social functioning among adult women in Kerala, India.Method: This research used a cross-sectional approach. A total of 139 adult wo

Perceived responsibility for change as an outcome predictor in cognitive-behavioural group therapy.

PURPOSE: The study of control beliefs in psychotherapy research has been neglected in the past years. Based on the evidence that some patients do not benefit enough from therapy because of inadequate expectancies regarding the responsibility and the mechanisms of therapeutic change, assessing control beliefs specific to the psychotherapy context and linking them to therapy outcome can help highlighting this specific aspect and reactivating a neglected field of clinical research. METHOD: Using a new validated instrument (Questionnaire on Control Expectancies in Psychotherapy, TBK), this study

Comparing the Reliability of Virtual and In-Person Post-Stroke Neuropsychological Assessment with Language Tasks.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological testing is essential for both clinical and basic stroke research; however, the in-person nature of this testing is a limitation. Virtual testing overcomes the hurdles of geographic location, mobility issues and permits social distancing, yet its validity has received relatively little investigation, particularly in comparison with in-person testing. METHOD: We expand on our prior findings of virtual testing feasibility by assessing virtual versus in-person administration of language and communication tasks with 48 left-hemisphere stroke patients (21 F, 27 M; mean

Cross-cultural adaptation and pilot psychometric validation of a quality-of-life questionnaire for adults with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The Quality-of-Life Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (QOL-PCD) instrument is the only health-related QOL instrument specific to measuring patient-reported outcomes in PCD patients. The adaptation and validation of the Spanish version of this questionnaire is a crucial step in formulating effective healthcare strategies that will improve the quality of life of these patients within the Spanish context. In this regard, the objective of the study was to cross-culturally adapt and pilot-validate a Spanish version for patients with PCD. METHODS: A total of 21 Spanish patients with PCD partic

The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS): An investigation of reliability, validity, and associations with clinical characteristics in psychiatric outpatients.

OBJECTIVE: This study, the first to assess the reliability and validity of the Work and Social Assessment Scale (WSAS) in Norwegian routine mental health care, examines differences in functional impairment based on sick leave status, psychiatric diagnosis, and sex. METHOD: Including 3573 individuals from community mental health services (n1 = 1157) and a psychiatric outpatient clinic (n2 = 2416), exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on subsample 1 and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on subsample 2 were utilized to replicate the identified factor structure. RESULTS: EFA supported a one-factor

Development and validation of the mastocytosis quality of life questionnaire: MC-QoL.

BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous disease characterized by a clonal expansion of mast cells in various organs. The vast majority of patients affected suffer from signs and symptoms caused by mediator release from mast cells. Although the disease burden is high, there is currently no specific instrument to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impairment in patients with mastocytosis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a disease-specific tool to assess HRQoL impairment in patients with cutaneous and indolent systemic mastocytosis, the Mastocytosis Q

The adult eosinophilic oesophagitis quality of life questionnaire: a new measure of health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoO) is a chronic disease characterised by significant symptoms and challenging treatment regimens. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is a useful way to direct patient care. EoO symptoms and treatment may impact patient HRQOL. Currently, there is no reliable and valid measure of adult EoO patient HRQOL. AIM: To validate the Adult Eosinophilic Oesophagitis Quality of Life (EoO-QOL-A) questionnaire as a measure of HRQOL in this population. METHODS: The EoO patients aged 18-70 recruited via an out-patient GI clinic and two EoO advocacy groups complete

The Relationship Between Social Cognition and Social Behavior in Patients with a Neurodegenerative Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review examines the relationship between social cognition (SC) and social behavior in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Social behavioral changes impact both patients and caregivers, contributing to increased caregiver burden and institutionalization risks. SC impairments are common in different neurodegenerative diseases and are assumed to underlie social behavioral changes. However, it has not been systematically investigated how SC and social behavior relate to each other, over all neurodegenerative patient groups. A systematic search was performed in the PubMed and

Dark triad personality traits and online impulsive buying: the mediating role of social media addiction.

OBJECTIVE: The rapid growth of e-commerce has made online impulsive buying (OIB) an increasingly significant consumer behavior. However, the psychological processes underlying this behavior-particularly the role of individual differences-remain inadequately explained. This study adopts the Latent State-Trait (LST) approach as an interpretive conceptual framework to examine the relationships among the Dark Triad personality traits (DTP) (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy), social media addiction (SMA), and online impulsive buying. METHOD: Cross-sectional research data were collecte

Audiogenic Seizures and Social Deficits: No Aggravation Found in Krushinsky-Molodkina Rats.

Epilepsy or epileptic syndromes affect more than 70 million people, often comorbid with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Seizures are concerned as a factor for social regression in ASD. A stepwise experimental approach to this problem requires an animal model to provoke seizures and monitor subsequent behavior. We used rats of the Krushinsky-Molodkina (KM) strain as a validated inbred genetic model for human temporal lobe epilepsy, with recently described social deficiency and hypolocomotion. Generalized tonic-clonic seizures in KM rats are sound-triggered, thus being controlled events in drug

Social Cognition in Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia and Pathological Subtypes: A Narrative Review.

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) belongs to the spectrum of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and is characterized by frontal dysfunction with executive deficits and prominent socioemotional impairments. Social cognition, such as emotion processing, theory of mind, and empathy may significantly impact daily behavior in bvFTD. Abnormal protein accumulation of tau or TDP-43 are the main causes of neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. Differential diagnosis is difficult due to the heterogeneous pathology in bvFTD and the high clinicopathological overlap with other FTLD

The psychometric properties of the Greek version of the Social Communication Questionnaire.

There is a scarcity of diagnostic assessments and screening tools for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in Greek. In this study, we examined the psychometric properties of the recently developed Greek version of the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ). We used parental responses for 311 children (mean age: 7.54 years old, SD = 1.92), 122 with a diagnosis of ASD (93 boys, 29 girls) and 189 neurotypical children (104 boys, 85 girls), with 167 responses referring to the Lifetime and 144 to the Current form of the SCQ. Both forms presented adequate construct validity based on the four-factor mo

Social Isolation as a Risk Factor in Cardiovascular Disease.

Multiple academic sites have reported that social isolation can pose a public health hazard, specifically premature cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease. This article reports on cardiovascular complications discovered by clinicians and public health researchers. In addition, there are reports that social isolation is associated with pulmonary disease, cancer, autoimmune disease, and even adverse outcomes during pregnancy. Social isolation has been a known factor for serious adverse outcomes in psychiatric circles since the time of Emil Kraepelin, Paul Eugen Bleuler, and Emile Dur

Associations between the social organization of communities and psychiatric disorders in rural Asia.

PURPOSE: We provide rare evidence of factors producing psychiatric variation in a general population sample from rural South Asia. The setting is particularly useful for demonstrating that variations in the social organization of communities, often difficult to observe in rich countries, are associated with important variations in mental health. METHODS: Clinically validated survey measures are used to document variation in psychiatric disorders among 401 adults. This sample is chosen from a systematic sample of the general population of rural Nepal, in a community-level-controlled comparison

Negotiating legitimacy and belonging: Disabled students' and practitioners' experience.

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities are underrepresented in health professions education and practice. Barriers for inclusion include stigma, disabling discourses, discriminatory programme design and oppressive interactions. Current understandings of this topic remain descriptive and fragmented. Existing research often includes only one profession, excludes particular types of disability and focuses on one aspect of the career journey. To expand understanding, we examined the recurrent forms of social relations that underlie the participation of disabled individuals in learning and practice

Lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder in older individuals with a history of institutional upbringing in childhood: the role of social acknowledgement and stressful life events.

Background: Child maltreatment (CM), particularly in institutional contexts, can affect the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research suggests that factors during CM (e.g. severity, variety, duration) and in the aftermath of CM (e.g. stressful life events, and social acknowledgement, i.e. the degree to which an individual feels validated and supported following a traumatic event) can explain some of the heterogeneity in PTSD development. However, there is a lack of research on long-term correlates of CM and mitigating factors, with only a few studies having been conducted

Validation of a brief quantitative measure of autistic traits: comparison of the social responsiveness scale with the autism diagnostic interview-revised.

Studies of the broader autism phenotype, and of subtle changes in autism symptoms over time, have been compromised by a lack of established quantitative assessment tools. The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS-formerly known as the Social Reciprocity Scale) is a new instrument that can be completed by parents and/or teachers in 15-20 minutes. We compared the SRS with the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) in 61 child psychiatric patients. Correlations between SRS scores and ADI-R algorithm scores for DSM-IV criterion sets were on the order of 0.7. SRS scores were unrelated to I.Q. and e
