Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor of pleura. A report of three cases of a newly described entity involving the pleura.

A newly recognized distinctive fibrous soft tissue lesion called "calcifying fibrous pseudotumor" (CFPT) was recently described in the soft tissues of the extremities, trunk, scrotum, groin, neck, or axilla. To date, CFPT has not been described in the pleura. The authors reviewed the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of three cases. A 23-year old woman and 34-year old man who presented with chest pain, and a 28-year old woman without chest symptoms were found to have a pleural mass on chest radiographs. Computed tomography (CT) scans of each patient revealed pleural-based nodular m

Imaging of shoulder instability.

Multiple imaging modalities are used in the evaluation of the patient with known or suspected instability. Plain films are often the initial study and are useful in detecting fractures and assessing alignment. Magnetic resonance imaging, with its multiplanar capabilities, such as that of visualizing soft-tissue structures, is rapidly becoming the study of choice for shoulder instability. Ultrasonography and computed tomography arthrography have limited roles in the evaluation of the patient with instability.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis leading to extrahepatic portal vein obstruction.

A very rare case of highly probable retroperitoneal fibrosis leading to extrahepatic portal obstruction is described. The patient was a 44-year-old woman with right pleural effusion and splenomegaly. Computed tomography indicated a large accumulation of soft tissues in the retroperitoneum, and abdominal angiography showed extensive portal obstruction. A twenty-year-long abuse of analgesics is suspected to have caused the retroperitoneal fibrosis.

Primary spinal extradural hydatid disease: report of a case with magnetic resonance characteristics and pathological correlation.

A rare case of hydatid disease of the lumbar extradural area and of the paravertebral muscles is reported. The patient underwent surgery, resulting in complete recovery. The limitations of computed tomography and the benefits of magnetic resonance imaging in forming a diagnosis are discussed. Magnetic resonance has been found to be an invaluable tool, not only in detecting the soft tissue extent of the disease but also in delineating the viability of hydatid cysts.

Rapid Design and Analysis of Microtube Pneumatic Actuators Using Line-Segment and Multi-Segment Euler-Bernoulli Beam Models.

Soft material-based pneumatic microtube actuators are attracting intense interest, since their bending motion is potentially useful for the safe manipulation of delicate biological objects. To increase their utility in biomedicine, researchers have begun to apply shape-engineering to the microtubes to diversify their bending patterns. However, design and analysis of such microtube actuators are challenging in general, due to their continuum natures and small dimensions. In this paper, we establish two methods for rapid design, analysis, and optimization of such complex, shape-engineered microt

Superimposition of 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography models of growing patients.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to evaluate a new method for superimposition of 3-dimensional (3D) models of growing subjects. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans were taken before and after Class III malocclusion orthopedic treatment with miniplates. Three observers independently constructed 18 3D virtual surface models from cone-beam computed tomography scans of 3 patients. Separate 3D models were constructed for soft-tissue, cranial base, maxillary, and mandibular surfaces. The anterior cranial fossa was used to register the 3D models of before and after treatment (a

Finite element modeling and experimental verification of lower extremity shape change under load.

Prediction and measurement of residuum shape change inside the prosthesis under various loading conditions is important for prosthesis design and evaluation. Residual limb surface measurements with the prosthesis in situ were used for construction of a finite element model (FEM). These surface measurements were obtained from volumetric computed tomography. A new experimental method for modeling the shape of the in situ lower residual limb was developed based on spiral X-ray computed tomography (SXCT) imaging. The p-version of the finite element method was used for estimating the material prope

Evolution of humanoid locomotion control.

Humanoid robots stand at the forefront of robotics, aiming to capture the agility, robustness, and expressivity of human movement in an anthropomorphic form. The locomotion control of humanoids has evolved from classical model-based methods to reinforcement learning powered by large-scale simulation and now to generative models that produce adaptive, whole-body behaviors, propelling humanoids toward operation in real-world environments. This survey positions humanoid control at a turning point, converging toward a unified paradigm of physics-guided generative intelligence that integrates optim

Microscopic image enhancement for accurate sickle cell disease identification using intuitionistic fuzzy driven retinex.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a debilitating genetic blood disorder that must be identified and diagnosed early for effective treatment planning. Several factors hinder early identification in microscopic images, including uneven blood smears, lack of focus during capture, inconsistent illumination, and improper microscope settings. This paper addresses the aforementioned factors using the Intuitionistic Fuzzy-Driven Retinex (IFDR) method. The work contains two phases: microscopic image enhancement using IFDR and classification using DenseNet121. IFDR is a hybrid model that combines the Intuiti

Hybrid deep learning approach for early emphysema diagnosis combining fuzzy C-means, TransUNet, and faster mask R-CNN.

Emphysema is a chronic condition of the lungs and it has to be diagnosed at an early age as it can harm the lungs effectively as they can be treated and controlled. The quality of the diagnosis depends on the efficient detection of the emphysematous areas in CT scans, yet the majority of the current methods fail in terms of noise, slight tissue differences, and delimiting the area composition. In this work, a new Hybrid IFCM-TransUNet-Faster Mask R-CNN framework to detect and localize prominently early emphysema cases will be proposed, featuring Improved Fuzzy C-Means (IFCM) preliminarily segm

An elasticity-curvature illusion decouples cutaneous and proprioceptive cues in active exploration of soft objects.

Our sense of touch helps us encounter the richness of our natural world. Across a myriad of contexts and repetitions, we have learned to deploy certain exploratory movements in order to elicit perceptual cues that are salient and efficient. The task of identifying optimal exploration strategies and somatosensory cues that underlie our softness perception remains relevant and incomplete. Leveraging psychophysical evaluations combined with computational finite element modeling of skin contact mechanics, we investigate an illusion phenomenon in exploring softness; where small-compliant and large-
