Subcutaneous phycomycosis--fungal infection mimicking a soft tissue tumor: a case report and review of literature.

Subcutaneous phycomycosis is a rare fungal infection of the deeper layers of skin. We describe a representative case. A 10-year-old boy presented with a large swelling on the back of 3 months duration. Biopsy of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of subcutaneous phycomycosis. There was complete resolution of the lesion after treatment with oral potassium iodide for 3 months.

Autologous platelets and leukocytes can improve healing of infected high-energy soft tissue injury.

Despite advances in surgical techniques and pharmacology, healing of injury-associated soft tissue defects is frequently complicated by infections, which often requires a secondary intervention. Cytokines are important mediators of healing. Application of autologous platelet-rich plasma enriched in growth factors and antimicrobial proteins, known also as platelet-leukocyte rich plasma (PLRP), represents a novel approach to the treatment of soft tissue and bone healing disturbances. This case is the first report on the application of PLRP in an infected high-energy soft tissue injury and shows

Iatrogenic calcinosis cutis--a rare differential diagnosis of soft-tissue infection in a neonate: a case report.

This case report describes a rare differential diagnosis of soft-tissue infection in a neonate. Fever, pain, inflammation, and acute tenderness in the limb of a neonate signify acute infection or osteomyelitis unless proved otherwise. Iatrogenic calcinosis cutis presents with similar symptoms and signs; its diagnosis may be easily confused with an infective condition by an unwary orthopaedic surgeon. This report aimed to raise doctors' awareness on the presentation, aetiopathogenesis, and course of the relatively rare iatrogenic calcinosis cutis.

Clinical outcomes of dalbavancin versus standard therapy for non-severe skin and soft-tissue infections as well as bone and joint infections: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: The burden of bacterial infections, including skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTI) and bone and joint infections (BJI), is substantial. We aimed to assess clinical outcomes in non-severe cases of SSTI and BJI following dalbavancin treatment compared with those after other standard treatments. METHODS: This retrospective observational study used the multicentre TriNetX electronic medical records database. Following propensity score matching (PSM), ORs with 95% CIs were estimated to compare hospitalization risk following dalbavancin administration relative to other antimicrobials.

Characterizing barriers to antibiotic stewardship for skin and soft-tissue infections in the emergency department using a systems engineering framework.

OBJECTIVE: Skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs) account for 3% of all emergency department (ED) encounters and are frequently associated with inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. We characterized barriers and facilitators to optimal antibiotic use for SSTIs in the ED using a systems engineering framework and matched them with targeted stewardship interventions. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted semistructured interviews with a purposefully selected sample of emergency physicians. METHODS: An interview guide was developed using the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SE

Early Switch From Intravenous to Oral Antibiotics in Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: An Algorithm-Based Prospective Multicenter Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: In hospitalized patients with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), intravenous (IV) empiric antibiotic treatment is initiated. The best time point for switching from IV to oral treatment is unknown. We used an algorithm-based decision tree for the switch from IV to oral antibiotics within 48 hours and aimed to investigate the treatment outcome of this concept. METHODS: In a nonrandomized trial, we prospectively enrolled 128 patients hospitalized with SSTI from July 2019 to May 2021 at 3 institutions. Clinical and biochemical response data during the first week and at follow-up…

Failure among Patients with Non-Tuberculous Mycobacterial Infections in Skin, Soft Tissue, and Musculoskeletal System in Southern Taiwan, 2012-2015.

Background: The incidence of non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections of the skin, soft tissue, and musculoskeletal system (SSTI) has increased over the past two decades, however, relatively few studies have documented the reasons for the reported increase. Specifically, no standardized treatment protocols have been adopted, therefore, clinical prognosis of the patients with NTM SSTI has thus far remained uncertain. In our study, we sought to identify risk factors for treatment failure in southern Taiwan. Methods: Patients with NTM SSTI, who received treatment between 2012 and 2015 were

Panton-Valentine leukocidin-positive Staphylococcus aureus skin and soft tissue infections among children in an emergency department in Madrid, Spain.

Fifty-three children who attended the emergency department with community-associated (CA) Staphylococcus aureus skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) were enrolled in the study. Seven cases of infection (13.2%) were due to methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Twelve of 46 available isolates (26.1%) were Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive. PVL-positive S. aureus SSTIs were more frequently associated with abscesses and cellulitis (75% vs. 38%, p 0.028), and more commonly required incision and drainage (75% vs. 21%, p 0.001). Most PVL-positive CA-MRSA isolates belonged to a single mu…
