Uncontrolled hemorrhage remains a leading cause of early, potentially preventable death following traumatic injury. Contemporary multicenter data continue to demonstrate that fatalities from hemorrhagic shock cluster within the first hours after injury, reinforcing the operational principle that the critical timeline is from point of injury to initiation of hemostatic resuscitation rather than time to hospital arrival. Ongoing armed conflict, including the war in Ukraine, as well as broader preparedness for future disasters and mass casualty events, underscores the need for evidence-based, pra

Public participation of illegal dumping could significantly influence the implementation of local waste management by collaborating with officials for early detection. However, the level of public participation varies from one region to another. To develop practical strategies for solid waste management, it is necessary to identify the space-time variability in public participation and explore the underlying reasons. Taking China as an example, this study explores public participation in illegal dumping in a large region by mining network data. Results show that there is a strong seasonality i

The identity and role of environmental factors in the etiology of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (sALS) is poorly understood outside of three former high-incidence foci of Western Pacific ALS and a hotspot of sALS in the French Alps. In both instances, there is a strong association with exposure to DNA-damaging (genotoxic) chemicals years or decades prior to clinical onset of motor neuron disease. In light of this recent understanding, we discuss published geographic clusters of ALS, conjugal cases, single-affected twins, and young-onset cases in relation to their demographic, geograph

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has become a substantial threat recently. However few studies have quantified spatiotemporal heterogeneity of HFMD and detected spatiotemporal interactive effect of potential driving factors on this disease.
METHODS: Using GeoDetector and Bayesian space-time hierarchy model, we characterized the epidemiology of HFMD in Henan, one of the largest population provinces in China, from 2012 to 2013, and quantified the impacts of potential driving factors.
RESULTS: Notably, 21.43 and 24.60% counties were identified as hot and cold spots, respectively.

Lichtheimia corymbifera is a ubiquitous soilborne zygomycete fungus, which is an opportunistic human pathogen in immunocompromised patients. The fungus can cause life-threatening diseases by attacking the lung during early stages of invasion and by disseminating during later phases causing systemic infection. Since infections have drastically increased during the last decades, it is a major goal to investigate the mechanisms underlying pathogenicity of L. corymbifera. One of the first barriers, which the fungus needs to cope with in the lung tissue, is phagocytosis by alveolar macrophages. Her

The sporogony of Hepatozoon caimani has been studied, by light microscopy, in the mosquito Culex fatigans fed on specimens of the caiman Caiman c. crocodilus showing gametocytes in their peripheral blood. Sporonts iniciate development in the space between the epithelium of the insect gut and the elastic membrane covering the haemocoele surface of the stomach. Sporulating oocysts are clustered on the gut, still invested by the gut surface membrane. Fully mature oocysts were first seen 21 days after the blood-meal. No sporogonic stages were found in some unidentified leeches fed on an infected c

There is great interest in understanding how different brain regions represent information across space and time. Information-based searchlight analyses systematically examine the information encoded within clusters of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) voxels across the brain. Significant searchlights contain information that can be used to decode conditions of interest, but significant discriminability can be achieved in a variety of ways. We report a new analysis method that can identify sub-networks of searchlights based on having similar temporal changes in information. We prese

The field of synthetic biology has become a revolutionary tool for engineering microorganisms capable of precise, programmed cancer treatment. Unlike conventional cancer treatments, which lack safe, selective toxicity, engineered microbial cells can detect tumor-specific signals, target hypoxic environments, and deliver cytotoxic payloads more effectively in both space and time. This review presents the most recent advancements in microbial chassis engineering, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Clostridium, Bifidobacterium, Vibrio cholera, Shigella species and L. monocytogenes along with

Mitosis is the process by which eukaryotic cells divide to produce two similar daughter cells with identical genetic material. Research into the process of mitosis is therefore of critical importance both for the basic understanding of cell biology and for the clinical approach to manifold pathologies resulting from its malfunctioning, including cancer. In this paper, we propose an approach to study mitotic progression automatically using deep learning. We used neural networks to predict different mitosis stages. We extracted video sequences of cells undergoing division and trained a Recurrent

Retinoschisin (RS1) is a secretory protein specifically localized to the extracellular domains in both the lateral retina and the pineal gland (PG). However, the functions of RS1 in the pineal body are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, in this study, we undertook histochemical, ultrastructural, and Western blotting analyses of the PG in rats and RS1-knock-in transgenic. We found that RS1 plays a key role in pineal gland calcification (PGC) in mice through both extracellular and intracellular pathways. RS1 was clustered around the cell membrane or intracellularly in pinealocytes

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma mansoni is a parasitic disease of great magnitude for Brazilian public health. We aimed to analyse the temporal trend and spatial and spatiotemporal distribution of positivity rates for schistosomiasis mansoni in northeast Brazil.
METHODS: This is a descriptive study with an ecological approach, carried out between 2005 and 2016. We calculated the positivity rate for the disease and then performed a segmented trend analysis (Joinpoint). For spatial analysis, we smoothed the positivity rates using the local empirical Bayesian method. We checked for spatial autocorrelati

In aging and diseased retina, Bruch's membrane (BrM) stiffens heterogeneously, impairing phagocytic clearance of photoreceptor outer segments by the overlying retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) monolayer and contributing to retinal degeneration. While substrate stiffness is known to influence RPE phagocytosis, conventional assays lack the spatial resolution to capture how mechanical cues coordinate behavior across the monolayer over time. Here, dynamic magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) substrates are combined with an automated machine-learning image-analysis pipeline to simultaneously quantify

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a severe viral disease of small ruminants, endemic in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, and a WOAH and FAO target for eradication. In the last decade, PPR emerged in countries in the Caucasus and Europe. Georgia's first outbreak in 2016 led to multi-year vaccination campaigns in Georgia and neighbouring, PPR-free, Armenia. This was followed by serological surveillance campaigns in 2019-2020 in both countries. In addition, in 2019, participatory diseases surveillance including interviews and focus-group discussions were conducted in four provinces of Georgia

Fibre tract delineation from diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable clinical tool for neurosurgical planning and navigation, as well as in research neuroimaging pipelines. Several popular methods are used for this task, each with different strengths and weaknesses making them more or less suited to different contexts. For neurosurgical imaging, priorities include ease of use, computational efficiency, robustness to pathology and ability to generalise to new tracts of interest. Many existing methods use streamline tractography, which may require expert neuroimaging operators f

Adsorption capture technology based on porous carbon is considered an important choice for the next generation of CO2 capture crafts, where broad operation pressure variations in different industrial scenarios require the targeted design of porous structures. However, the complex pore structure of porous carbon makes the relationship between the pore structure and the pressure-driven CO2 adsorption behavior still unclear. Herein, through experiments using model carbon adsorbents with precisely designed pore size distributions combined with molecular-level calculations of CO2 adsorption thermod

BACKGROUND: The dysconnection hypothesis has been proposed to account for pathophysiological mechanisms underlying schizophrenia. Widespread structural changes suggesting abnormal connectivity in schizophrenia have been imaged. A functional counterpart of the structural maps would be the EEG synchronization maps. However, due to the limits of currently used bivariate methods, functional correlates of dysconnection are limited to the isolated measurements of synchronization between preselected pairs of EEG signals.
METHODS/RESULTS: To reveal a whole-head synchronization topography in schizophr

BACKGROUND: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is endemic to South Africa, where vaccine use is negligible. We describe the epidemiology of IMD in South Africa.
METHODS: IMD cases were identified through a national, laboratory-based surveillance program, GERMS-SA, from 2003-2016. Clinical data on outcomes and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) statuses were available from 26 sentinel hospital sites. We conducted space-time analyses to detect clusters of serogroup-specific IMD cases.
RESULTS: Over 14 years, 5249 IMD cases were identified. The incidence was 0.97 cases per 100 000 persons in

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax occurs more frequently in the neonatal period than at any other time of life and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. It may be treated with either needle aspiration or insertion of a chest tube. The former consists of aspiration of air with a syringe through a needle or an angiocatheter, usually through the second or third intercostal space in the midclavicular line. The chest tube is usually placed in the anterior pleural space passing through the sixth intercostal space into the pleural opening, turned anteriorly and directed to the location of the

Xenogenesis has been recognized as a prospective method for producing channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus ♀ × blue catfish, I. furcatus ♂ hybrids. The xenogenesis procedure can be achieved by transplanting undifferentiated stem cells derived from a donor fish into a sterile recipient. Xenogenesis for hybrid catfish embryo production has been accomplished using triploid channel catfish as a surrogate. However, having a surrogate species with a shorter maturation period, like white catfish (Ameiurus catus), would result in reduced feed costs, labor costs, and smaller body size requirements, mak
