Fractions containing metallothioneins (MT's), extracted from the liver cytosol of humans, were analysed to determine the complete distribution pattern of the metals copper, cadmium and zinc. Samples of cirrhotic livers which had come from organs removed during transplantation were examined for differences in the trace-element binding pattern. After the extraction of supernatants from the tissue samples, membrane ultrafiltration of the cytosolic solution was carried out to separate all high-molecular proteins with molecular weights >100 kDa. Cyanide binding to prostaglandin H (PGH) synthase results in a spectral shift in the Soret region. This shift was exploited to determine equilibrium and kinetic parameters of the cyanide binding process. At pH 8.0, ionic strength 0.22 M, 4 degrees C, the cyanide dissociation constant, determined from equilibrium experiments, is (65 +/- 10) microM. The marble industry generates metal-bearing waste that contaminates water resources and poses occupational health risks. This study iassesed heavy metal contamination in water sources and bioaccumulation in marble factory workers in Peshawar, Pakistan. To investigate the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, paraoxonase1 (PON1) activity and 8-hydroxy 2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels in the primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patient. Blood samples from 52 healthy individuals and 53 patients with POAG were analyzed for MDA and 8-OHdG by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) and PON1 by spectrophotometry.
