Age- and sex-related differences in the relationship between pure-tone audiometry and speech discrimination in a Japanese cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the relationship between pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and speech discrimination (SpD) in a Japanese cohort, focusing on the divergence of these metrics across age groups and biological sex. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed cases who underwent both pure-tone audiometry and SpD testing at Yokosuka Kyosai Hospital between April 2007 and February 2025. To restrict the analysis to hearing loss attributable solely to age-related decline, cases were excluded if they had active external or middle ear disease, a history of inner ear or retrocochlear disorders, significant

Learning impairments in Fmr1-/- mice on an audio-visual temporal pattern discrimination task.

Estimating time and making predictions is integral to our experience of the world. Given the importance of timing to most behaviors, disruptions in temporal processing and timed performance are reported in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), and Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Symptoms that implicitly include disruption in timing are atypical turn-taking during social interactions, unusual verbal intonations, poor reading, speech and language skills, inattention, delays in learning, and difficu

The Validity, Reliability, and Accuracy of the European French Version of the Intelligibility in Context Scale.

PURPOSE: The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a free parent report questionnaire assessing functional intelligibility. Although it has been translated into French, it lacks validation. This study addresses two main objectives. First, we aimed to establish the psychometric properties of the European French version of the ICS (ICS-EF). Second, we explored the ICS-EF as a measure of the functional impact of speech sound disorders (SSDs), specifically investigating how communication partner familiarity influences intelligibility ratings. METHOD: A total of 189 French-speaking preschool c

Recognition of emotions from visual and prosodic cues in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Parkinson Disease (PD) patients are impaired at perceiving emotions from facial and prosodic cues and whether any putative defective performance concerns recognition of a particular emotion. BACKGROUND: Braak et al. [1] demonstrated that in different stages PD pathology involves the nigrostriatal system, the amygdala, and the insular cortex. Discrete brain lesions to these structures can cause selective deficits in recognising facial and prosodic stimuli expressing particular emotions. However, the investigation of facial and prosodic emotional processing in PD pa

A case of improved hearing with cochlear implantation in Gaucher disease type 1.

Gaucher disease is a lysosomal storage disorder that is caused by congenital defective function of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase. Glucocerebroside that is not hydrolyzed by glucocerebrosidase mainly accumulates in the reticular tissue. We describe a Japanese boy with Gaucher disease type 1 who developed bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss within approximately 4years. We performed cochlear implantation initially on his right ear and again on his left ear 5 months later. The cochlear implants were successfully utilized with a speech discrimination score of 95% on a Japanese sentence re

Recurrent sudden sensorineural hearing loss sensitive to transtympanic and systemic steroid treatment: case report.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rare otologic emergency. Recurrence of this pathology is extremely rare, and its incidence remains unknown. We report the case of a previously healthy 28-year-old man with normal findings on bilateral ear examination who presented with severe unilateral SSNHL. Audiometry demonstrated a pure-tone average of 70 dB and a speech discrimination score of 0% in the affected ear. The patient was treated within hours of the onset of symptoms with an intratympanic injection of dexamethasone and then started on a tapered course of oral prednisone. He experie

Within-subjects comparison of the HiRes and Fidelity120 speech processing strategies: speech perception and its relation to place-pitch sensitivity.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have confirmed that current steering can increase the number of discriminable pitches available to many cochlear implant (CI) users; however, the ability to perceive additional pitches has not been linked to improved speech perception. The primary goals of this study were to determine (1) whether adult CI users can achieve higher levels of spectral cue transmission with a speech processing strategy that implements current steering (Fidelity120) than with a predecessor strategy (HiRes) and, if so, (2) whether the magnitude of improvement can be predicted from indivi

Frequency discrimination and literacy skills in children with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss.

It has been suggested that specific reading disability (SRD) may be attributable to an impaired ability to perceive spectral differences between sounds that leads to a deficit in frequency discrimination and subsequent problems with language and literacy. The objective of the present study was three-fold. We aimed to (a) determine whether children with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss were impaired in their ability to discriminate frequency, (b) assess the extent to which any such deficits may be due to an inability to use information derived from phase locking, and (c) examine whet

Measuring state pre-event and post-event rumination in Social Anxiety Disorder: Psychometric properties of the Socially Anxious Rumination Questionnaire (SARQ).

Cognitive models have consistently recognised pre-event and post-event rumination as maintaining factors in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of a state-based measure of pre-event and post-event rumination in SAD: The Socially Anxious Rumination Questionnaire (SARQ), which was formerly known as the Thoughts Questionnaire. In particular, we examined the factor structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, sensitivity to treatment response, clinical cut-off scores (relative to non-clinical participants), and

Harmonic distortion measurements in clinical hearing and fitting. Preliminary report.

Measurement of the distortion from hearing aids and its influence on their fitting has become practicable with the implementation of real ear measurement in the audiological clinic. Thus the harmonic distortion measured in the ear fitted with the hearing aid can be measured by means of a probe in the ear canal. The objective of the present investigation was to examine the value of harmonic distortion measurements in the fitting of hearing aids within a clinical setting. The material comprised 101 consecutive patients who had been prescribed different types of hearing aids based on the POGO for

Vagus nerve stimulation during training fails to improve learning in healthy rats.

Learning new skills requires neuroplasticity. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) during sensory and motor events can increase neuroplasticity in networks related to these events and might therefore serve to facilitate learning on sensory and motor tasks. We tested if VNS could broadly improve learning on a wide variety of tasks across different skill domains in healthy, female adult rats. VNS was paired with presentation of stimuli or on successful trials during training, strategies known to facilitate plasticity and improve recovery in models of neurological disorders. VNS failed to improve either
