Household size is associated with unintelligible speech in children who have intellectual disabilities: A South African study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether four socioeconomic factors, namely caregiver age, caregiver education, family income and/or household size were related to the presence of motor delays or unintelligible speech in South African children with intellectual disabilities. METHODS: Caregivers of children with intellectual disabilities completed a biographical questionnaire regarding their home environments. Other items on the questionnaire queried whether their children experienced co-occurring developmental impairments of motor delays or unintelligible speech. RESULTS:

NaturalL2S: End-to-end high-quality multispeaker lip-to-speech synthesis with differential digital signal processing.

Recent advancements in visual speech recognition (VSR) have promoted progress in lip-to-speech synthesis, where pre-trained VSR models enhance the intelligibility of synthesized speech by providing valuable semantic information. The success achieved by cascade frameworks, which combine pseudo-VSR with pseudo-text-to-speech (TTS) or implicitly utilize the transcribed text, highlights the benefits of leveraging VSR models. However, these methods typically rely on mel-spectrograms as an intermediate representation, which may introduce a key bottleneck: the domain gap between synthetic mel-spectro

The Influence of Hearing Loss on the Pupil Response to Degraded Speech.

PURPOSE: Current evidence regarding the influence of hearing loss on the pupil response elicited by speech perception is inconsistent. This might be partially due to confounding effects of age. This study aimed to compare pupil responses in age-matched groups of normal-hearing (NH) and hard of hearing (HH) listeners during listening to speech. METHOD: We tested the baseline pupil size and mean and peak pupil dilation response of 17 NH participants (Mage = 46 years; age range: 20-62 years) and 17 HH participants (Mage = 45 years; age range: 20-63 years) who were pairwise matched on age and edu

Development of The Viking Speech Scale to classify the speech of children with cerebral palsy.

Surveillance registers monitor the prevalence of cerebral palsy and the severity of resulting impairments across time and place. The motor disorders of cerebral palsy can affect children's speech production and limit their intelligibility. We describe the development of a scale to classify children's speech performance for use in cerebral palsy surveillance registers, and its reliability across raters and across time. Speech and language therapists, other healthcare professionals and parents classified the speech of 139 children with cerebral palsy (85 boys, 54 girls; mean age 6.03 years, SD 1

Palatopharyngeal obturator prosthesis - A substitute for a dynamic separator: A technique.

The dynamic of velopharyngeal sphincter mechanism is a complex motor skill involving coordination of soft palate and posterior and lateral pharyngeal walls. At rest, the soft palate drapes downward so that the oropharynx and the nasopharynx open allowing for normal breathing. However, during deglutition and certain speech, sounds such as plosives require complete or nearly complete velopharyngeal closure, whereas during utterance of vowels, the port needs to be open at varying degrees. Defects in velopharyngeal mechanism lead to hypernasality and decreased intelligibility of speech. The aim of

Measuring the effects of reverberation and noise on sentence intelligibility for hearing-impaired listeners.

PURPOSE: The Speech Transmission Index (STI; Houtgast, Steeneken, & Plomp, 1980; Steeneken & Houtgast, 1980) is commonly used to quantify the adverse effects of reverberation and stationary noise on speech intelligibility for normal-hearing listeners. Duquesnoy and Plomp (1980) showed that the STI can be applied for presbycusic listeners, relating speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in various reverberant conditions to a fixed, subject-dependent STI value. The current study aims at extending their results to a wider range of hearing-impaired listeners. METHOD: A reverberant analogue of the SRT…

Frequency-dependent effects of motor thalamus deep brain stimulation on speech and swallowing.

Speech and swallowing are complex motor sequences driven by cortico-bulbar communication between motor cortex and cranial muscles. Damage to … hagia and severe dysarthria, low-frequency DBS improved facial movement, swallowing efficiency, and speech intelligibility across respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory subsystems. Importantly, these improvements in facial articulator and speech subsystems control were specific to low-frequency (50-80 Hz) stimulation. These findings provide preliminary evidence that m …

Vowel production of Mandarin-speaking hearing aid users with different types of hearing loss.

In contrast with previous research focusing on cochlear implants, this study examined the speech performance of hearing aid users with conductive (n = 11), mixed (n = 10), and sensorineural hearing loss (n = 7) and compared it with the speech of hearing control. Speech intelligibility was evaluated by computing the vowel space area defined by the Mandarin Chinese corner vowels /a, u, i/. The acoustic differences between the vowels were assessed using the Euclidean distance. The results revealed that both the conductive and mixed hearing loss groups exhibited a reduced vowel working space, but …
