Repetitive motor behavior: further characterization of development and temporal dynamics.

Repetitive behaviors are diagnostic for autism spectrum disorders, common in related neurodevelopmental disorders, and normative in typical development. In order to identify factors that mediate repetitive behavior development, it is necessary to characterize the expression of these behaviors from an early age. Extending previous findings, we characterized further the ontogeny of stereotyped motor behavior both in terms of frequency and temporal organization in deer mice. A three group trajectory model provided a good fit to the frequencies of stereotyped behavior across eight developmental ti

"I'm Not Here to Teach You How to Be Gay:" LGBTQ+ Client Experiences of Othering in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy.

Despite the increasing emphasis on addressing the intersections of client and therapist identity to improve therapeutic outcomes, therapy clients holding marginalized identities continue to experience othering. Othering is a process that engenders marginalization and inequality based on preconceived group identity, involves the hegemonic construction of belonging and not belonging, and often entails both stereotyping and racialization. This paper reports on the experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning plus (LGBTQ+) emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT) clients' …

Psychological distress and investment in one's appearance in patients with pemphigus.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris is a chronic disease not currently curable. Physical involvement and the impact of chronic therapies can lead … 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.20-45.11; OR 5.38, 95% CI 0.81-35.87, respectively, for appearance stereotyping and body-image vulnerability], together with a perceived high disease severity (OR 6.03, 95% CI 1.90-23.46). CONCLUSIONS: Our results are compatible with the idea that some forms of psychological distress could be in part due to one's perception of …

Female Chess Players Outperform Expectations When Playing Men.

Stereotype threat has been offered as a potential explanation of differential performance between men and women in some cognitive domains. Questions remain about the reliability and generality of the phenomenon. Previous studies have found that stereotype threat is activated in female chess players when they are matched against male players. I used data from over 5.5 million games of international tournament chess and found no evidence of a stereotype-threat effect. In fact, female players outperform expectations when playing men. Further analysis showed no influence of degree of challenge, pl

[Behavioral changes induced by repeated administration of mazindol, an anorexiant, in rats].

Behavioral changes in locomotor activity and stereotyped behaviors induced by daily administration (for 7 days) of mazindol (5 and 10 mg/kg, po) were compared with those induced by methamphetamine (10 mg/kg) in rats. On day 1, mazindol increased locomotor activity, which was enhanced by daily administrations. Stereotyped behaviors were also induced by mazindol, which became more marked following daily administrations. Methamphetamine markedly increased stereotyped behavior rather than locomotor activity on day 1, and the effects were not enhanced by daily administrations. The increased locomot

The portrayal of persons with disabilities in Arabic drama: A literature review.

BACKGROUND: The media plays a vital role in addressing the issues of society through audiovisual means that contribute to the transmission of media messages. Drama contributes to implement positive values or negative attitudes in people's minds towards various societal issues. The negative stereotypes shaped by drama about persons with disabilities (PWDs) have attracted the attention of the researchers. Therefore, Arabic drama is required to present a true portrait of PWDs that reflects their reality without exaggeration or discrimination. It is also required to re-correct the stereotyped imag

What is the Image of the "Typical Cancer Patient"? The View of Physicians.

Former research has identified stigmatizing attitudes toward cancer patients in the general population. Little is known about (implicit) attitudes of physicians toward cancer patients. By using the prototype approach, the study investigated German physicians' prototypical perceptions of cancer patients. Five hundred nineteen physicians (mean age: 46 years, 47% female) who regularly treat cancer patients participated in the questionnaire study. Participants were asked to state three prototype attributes that describe the "typical cancer patient." Open format answers were coded on the dimensions

Effects of single-use and group-use enrichment on stereotypy and intragroup aggressive and affiliative behaviors of a social group of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) at the Singapore Zoo.

Four food-based enrichment devices were used to test the effects of single-use and group-use enrichment devices on stereotypy, intragroup aggression, and affiliation in a compatible group of 5 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). All enrichment devices were found to reduce overall stereotypic behavior from baseline levels (without enrichment). The occurrence of stereotypic behavior differed between individual squirrel monkeys with an adult female showing the highest level of stereotypic behavior. This individual also showed the highest usage of enrichment devices, and stereotypic behavior was

Perspective-taking increases willingness to engage in intergroup contact.

The current research explored whether perspective-taking increases willingness to engage in contact with stereotyped outgroup members. Across three studies, we find that perspective-taking increases willingness to engage in contact with negatively-stereotyped targets. In Study 1, perspective-takers sat closer to, whereas stereotype suppressors sat further from, a hooligan compared to control participants. In Study 2, individual differences in perspective-taking tendencies predicted individuals' willingness to engage in contact with a hooligan, having effects above and beyond those of empathic

Wortmannin, a potent phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor, suppresses methamphetamine-induced stereotypy and hyperlocomotion in mice.

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) (EC2.7.1.137) is an enzyme essential for a variety of biological processes, including inflammation and neuroplasticity. There is a close, positive relationship between these biological functions and the action of psychostimulant drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine (METH). This suggests that the inhibition of PI3K might regulate METH-induced behavior such as hyperlocomotion and stereotyped behavior. To evaluate the effects of PI3K inhibition on METH-induced behavior, mice were treated with wortmannin, a potent PI3K inhibitor, followed by METH. Horizont

Algorithmic minds, human bias: How AI-generated images shape mental health stigma.

Mental health stigma is shaped by complex social and representational processes increasingly influenced by digital and algorithmic environments. Despite the rapid diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (AI), little is known about how AI-generated visual representations may affect stigma-related responses. Because generative AI systems may reproduce and amplify stereotypes embedded in their training data and in the prompts used to guide image generation, they represent an increasingly relevant channel through which visual representations of mental illness are produced and disseminated.

Gender's role in misperceptions of peers' sexual motives.

The sexual double standard influences men's and women's sexual attitudes and behavior, leading men and women to consider distinct sexual motives, or reasons whether or not to engage in sexual intercourse (Crawford & Popp 2003; Reiss 1964). The goal of the present paper was to document how the sexual double standard shapes perceptions of peers' sexual motives. We build on past research by using open-ended questions and measuring perceptions of both same-gender and other-gender peers. The sample included 154 heterosexual college students (50% female, 49% European American, 25% Latino American, 2

Whereas some participants voiced close connections with peers, others described prejudices, stereotyping, and limited dating experiences. Results from this study support the need for comprehensive assessment of social relationships in adolescent women with SB and active interventions to address problems identified. The Effects of Occupational Status and Sex-Typed Jobs on the Evaluation of Men and Women.

Background: Occupational segregation by gender is one of the major problems faced by professional women in the labor market. Since the sixties, psychological explanations point out that gender stereotypes are responsible for this persistent inequality in the workforce. Nevertheless, most of research has overlooked that emotions are particularly important as the discrimination faced by professional women is better explained by the ambivalent feelings they provoke than by stereotyping. Aim: The aim of this research is to analyse from the Stereotype Content Model (SCM, Fiske et al., 2002) and the…

Psychotomimetic-like behavioral effects of memantine in the mouse.

A single administration of mice with memantine (1-amino-3,5-dimethyladamantane), a glutamatergic N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, induced stereotyped behaviors in dose- and time-dependent manners. The predominant behavioral component of the stereotypy was a continuous, exaggerated sniffing which was accompanied by persistent locomotion. In contrast, a psychostimulant methamphetamine (METH) predominantly induced a stereotyped biting and other forms of intense stationary stereotypical behaviors. Memantine-induced stereotyped sniffing was attenuated by pretreatment with haloperido

The contribution of facial dynamics to subtle expression recognition in typical viewers and developmental visual agnosia.

Facial expressions are inherently dynamic cues that develop and change over time, unfolding their affective signal. Although facial dynamics are assumed important for emotion recognition, testing often involves intense and stereotypical expressions and little is known about the role of temporal information in the recognition of subtle, non-stereotypical expressions. In Experiment 1 we demonstrate that facial dynamics are critical for recognizing subtle and non-stereotypical facial expressions, but not for recognizing intense and stereotypical displays of emotion. In Experiment 2 we further exa

At the crossroads of conspicuous and concealable: what race categories communicate about sexual orientation.

We found that judgments of a perceptually ambiguous social category, sexual orientation, varied as a function of a perceptually obvious social category, race. Sexual orientation judgments tend to exploit a heuristic of gender inversion that often promotes accuracy. We predicted that an orthogonal social category that is itself gendered, race, would impact both sexual orientation categorizations and their accuracy. Importantly, overlaps in both the phenotypes and stereotypes associated with specific race and sex categories (e.g., the categories Black and Men and the categories Asian and Women)

Two distinct modes of forebrain circuit dynamics underlie temporal patterning in the vocalizations of young songbirds.

Accurate timing is a critical aspect of motor control, yet the temporal structure of many mature behaviors emerges during learning from highly variable exploratory actions. How does a developing brain acquire the precise control of timing in behavioral sequences? To investigate the development of timing, we analyzed the songs of young juvenile zebra finches. These highly variable vocalizations, akin to human babbling, gradually develop into temporally stereotyped adult songs. We find that the durations of syllables and silences in juvenile singing are formed by a mixture of two distinct modes
