The anatomy and variation of the coracoid attachment of the subclavius muscle in humans.

The functions of the subclavius muscle (SM) are described as stabilization of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) and resisting elevation of the lateral end of the clavicle. During systematic cadaveric dissections, we observed additional fibrous structures, previously described as variants of the anatomy, extending from the SM and inserting into the coracoid process (CP). Due to the high incidence of these structures in our dissections, we hypothesized that the attachment at the CP is more common than appreciated and that, as a corollary, the function of the SM was (or has been) more complex than…

Branchial anomalies in children: A report of 105 surgical cases.

BACKGROUND: Branchial anomalies (BAs) account for 20% of all congenital masses in children. We sought to review the incidence of involvement of individual anomalies, diagnostic methods, surgical treatment, and complications of BAs in children. In addition, we also classified our study and analyzed a congenital lower neck cutaneous fistula near the sternoclavicular joint that was thought to be the skin-side remnant of the fourth BAs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 105 children who were referred to our hospital from June 2009 to December 2016 for the treatment of BAs. RESULT…

Fatal tiger attack: a case report with emphasis on typical tiger injuries characterized by partially resembling stab-like wounds.

Fatalities due to attacks by tigers on humans are uncommon and are rarely described in the medico-legal literature. We herein present a forensic investigation in a unique case of a fatal tiger attack in the wild on a 35 year old female in India by an Indian Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris). The attack resulted in two pairs of puncture wounds over the nape area with occult cervical spine injuries resulting from transfixing of spine due to the tiger canines; multiple puncture wounds, numerous scratches and abrasions consistent with the tiger claw injuries and injury to the right jugulocarot

Shoulder injuries during alpine skiing.

We retrospectively reviewed alpine skiing injuries at a destination ski resort during three seasons to characterize the incidence and types of shoulder injuries. A total of 3451 injuries in 3247 patients were reviewed. The overall injury rate was 4.44 injuries per 1000 skier-days. Injuries to the upper extremity represented 29.1% (N = 1004) of all alpine ski injuries. Injuries involving the shoulder complex (393 injuries in 350 patients) accounted for 39.1% of upper extremity injuries and 11.4% of all alpine skiing injuries. The rate of shoulder injury was 0.51 injuries per 1000 skier-days. Pa

A study evaluating differences in 3D upper limb kinematics and surface electromyography measures in adults with and without facioscapulohumeral dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD) is a rare disease that causes progressive muscle wasting and loss of function, with the upp … ral elevation was similar between groups. Considerable variability across the acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints was noted in all FSHD groups, with no clear between group differences. Scapulohumeral rhythm was reduced in the FSHD (no surgery) group. FSHD groups demonstrated prolonged and higher normalised activity levels of the trapezius, anterior deltoid, an …

Diagnostics of septic arthritis in the sternoclavicular region: 10 consecutive patients and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Septic arthritis in the sternoclavicular (SC) region is rare and may be difficult to diagnose clinically and radiologically. It mainly affects immunocompromised persons, and can clinically be misinterpreted as tumor and rheumatic disorders. Lacking radiological reference standard, a multimodality approach may contribute to a prolonged diagnostic process. PURPOSE: To describe the diagnostics of septic arthritis in the SC region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 2001 and 2011 10 patients with Staphylococcus infection in the SC region were investigated in our institution. Clinical, bio

Osteomyelitis of the clavicle: clinical, radiologic, and bacteriologic findings in ten patients.

Most lesions of the clavicle are traumatic and pose few diagnostic difficulties. Nontraumatic clavicular lesions, on the other hand, are rare and frequently present problems in diagnosis. This report reviews the clinical, radiologic, and bacteriologic findings in ten patients, six of whom were diagnosed as having acute osteomyelitis and four chronic osteomyelitis. The differential diagnosis of clavicular osteomyelitis is also discussed. The clinical duration of the infectious process in these patients ranged from 2 weeks to 1.5 years. All patients presented with pain; six had fever, three had

Septic arthritis of the sterno-clavicular joint as a cause of dysphagia: a report of two cases and review of literature.

Septic arthritis of sterno-clavicular joint is a rare entity which is often associated with predisposing conditions like intravenous drug abuse and diabetes. Its prevalence in healthy subjects with absence of medical co-morbidities has been sporadically reported. Due to the rarity of the condition, diagnosis is often delayed predisposing the patients to serious complications. Clinical suspicion supported by haematological and radiological investigations is needed for early diagnosis. Dysphagia as a complication of sterno-clavicular joint infection has not been reported. In this study, we repor

Implementing acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments with a novel sternoclavicular posterior rotation estimation approach improves agreement between simulated muscle activation and surface electromyography in shoulder musculoskeletal simulation.

Acromioclavicular (AC) and coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments stabilize the shoulder, but they are often omitted from musculoskeletal (MSK) simulations. Because ligament force depends on clavicle-scapula kinematics, sternoclavicular posterior rotation (SCpr) estimation may affect simulated muscle activation when AC-CC ligaments are implemented. This study aimed to determine how AC-CC ligament implementation and SCpr estimation affect the agreement between simulated muscle activation and surface electromyography (sEMG) during arm elevation-lowering. Eight healthy males performed arm elevation-lowe

Concurrent thyroid ima artery, high-riding brachiocephalic trunk, and supreme intercostal artery in thoracic vertebral artery configuration: a computed tomography angiography case report.

PURPOSE: To report a cluster of five concurrent cervical vascular variants identified on computed tomography angiography (CTA), including a … 7 transverse foramen and descending posterior to the necks of ribs 1-3. In addition, bilateral poor sternoclavicular joint articulation converted the suprasternal notch into an interclavicular space simultaneously containing the BCT, TIA, and thyroid isthmus. CONCLUSION: This combination of variants places multiple vessels in a shared pretracheal/interclavicular operat …

Surgical repair of refractory strictures of esophagogastric anastomoses caused by leakage following esophagectomy.

Refractory strictures of esophagogastric anastomosis caused by leakage following an esophagectomy are a severe complication, for which either repeated balloon dilations or bougies are not necessarily effective. In such a case, surgical repair is quite difficult because the esophageal substitute such as the stomach or colon is usually located in the mediastinum and severely adhesive to the neighboring organs. Furthermore, in case the resected stricture is too long for direct re-anastomosis to be performed, a free jejunal graft or a new esophageal substitute should be prepared. This paper propos

Three-dimensional scapulothoracic motion following treatment for breast cancer.

Varying levels of shoulder morbidity following treatment for breast cancer have been reported. Patients report pain, weakness, tightness and reduced functional capacity. Normal painfree motion of the arm and shoulder requires mobility in the scapulothoracic, glenohumeral, acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints. Under healthy conditions elevation of the arm is accompanied by scapula retraction, lateral rotation and posterior tilt. However, when scapulothoracic motion is disproportionate to glenohumeral motion, the potential exists for microtrauma and long term pain. A number of studies o…

Multidimensional Motor Phenotype Characterization in Children with Joubert Syndrome: A Cross-Sectional Cohort Study.

Background: Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare neurodevelopmental ciliopathy characterized by cerebellar and brainstem malformation and heterogeneous motor outcomes. Although global developmental delay is well described, integrated clinical characterization combining functional and structural domains remains limited. The aim of this exploratory study was to describe a multidimensional motor phenotype in children with JS and to explore associations between selected functional and structural parameters. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional cohort study was conducted in 25 children with MRI-confir
