A drug-containing polymeric dispersion was applied onto nonpareil sugar spheres (18/20 mesh) using a fluid-bed spray coater. Eudragit RS30D was selected as the polymeric coating material. Melatonin secreted by the pineal gland in a circadian rhythm was used as a model drug. The aim of this study was to examine whether the sugar moiety of Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) is affected by pathological processes caused by acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). An abnormal cellobiose/mannitol ratio is present in new patients presenting with dermatitis herpetiformis and in patients who have never adhered to a strict gluten-free diet. In patients with dermatitis herpetiformis in remission on a strict gluten-free diet, small bowel absorption as measured by the cellobiose/mannitol ratio is normal. It is suggested that cellobiose/mannitol ratio absorption is a useful screening test for the intestinal abnormality associated with dermatitis herpetiformis and failure of the test to return to normal could suggest poor dietary compliance.
