Thyroid function in nestling tree swallows and eastern bluebirds exposed to non-persistent pesticides and p, p'-DDE in apple orchards of southern Ontario, Canada.

This study examined the associated effects of pesticides and persistent residues of p,p'-DDE on thyroid function in 16-day-old tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and 12-day-old eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis). Apple orchards sprayed with pesticides in current use and reference sites were chosen for study in southern Ontario, Canada, during 2000-2001. We assessed thyroid hormone concentrations (plasma and muscle thyroxine [T4], and triiodothyronine [T3]) and the response to a challenge with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) as well as parameters of thyroid histology. Individual nests were ex…

An exploratory study of the influence of clinico-demographic variables on swallowing and swallowing-related quality of life in a cohort of oral and oropharyngeal cancer patients treated with primary surgery.

There are insufficient data on swallowing and the consequences of its dysfunction in patients with cancers of the oral cavity (OC) and oropharynx (OP) that are treated with primary surgery. The study attempts to explore the effect of important clinico-demographic variables on post-treatment swallowing and related quality of life (QOL) in post-surgical OC and OP cancer patients. Sixty-two consecutive OC and OP cancer patients completed the MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI) questionnaire. Mean scores were computed. Comparison of scores based on mean ranks were performed using Mann-Whitney

Perception of Voice and Swallowing Difficulties in Parkinson's Disease: A Correlational Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) can affect voice and swallowing from early stages, with relevant functional consequences. However, evidence on the relationship between self-perceived difficulties in these domains and motor impairment remains scarce in Chile. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between self-perceived voice difficulties, self-perceived swallowing difficulties, and motor impairment severity in individuals with PD. METHOD: An observational, cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted with 29 individuals with idiopathic PD recruited through non-probabilistic conv

The swallow tail sign: mechanisms, neuroimaging advances and future perspectives.

Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, poses a significant challenge to elderly health. Its diagnosis currently relies primarily on clinical symptoms, which often proves inadequate for differentiating PD from other forms of parkinsonism, particularly in early disease stages. Although positron emission tomography (PET) has offered compelling evidence supporting the differential diagnosis of PD, its high cost and radiation exposure limit its widespread use. Consequently, there is a pressing need for more accessible, convenient, non-invasive, and safe diagnos

Fluid Pressure Sensing Strategy Suitable for Swallowing Soft Gripper.

Soft grippers exhibit excellent adaptability in handling objects of various shapes. However, due to the large deformation and high compliance of their constituent materials, the integration of sensing capabilities has long been a major research challenge. Based on the swallowing-type soft gripper proposed in previous work, this study explores the gripper's capability to perceive object information by leveraging the characteristic that the sealed cavity undergoes volume change due to compression by the object during swallowing, thereby altering the pressure of the internal fluid medium. By esta

External validation of the predictive swallow score for dysphagia in stroke patients.

INTRODUCTION: Post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is a common complication following acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Predicting the recovery of swallow function remains challenging. The Predictive Swallow Score (PRESS) model, derived and validated in a Swiss cohort, sought to predict the recovery of PSD after AIS. We aimed to validate the PRESS model in a US-cohort, conducting a two-center retrospective review of 149 patients with AIS and functional oral intake scale (FOIS) ≤ 4. METHODS: We collected the predictors of recovery of PSD according to PRESS (age, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), any2 score, stroke

Longitudinal change in swallow function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).

ObjectiveParkinson's disease (PD) frequently involves dysphagia, yet real-world longitudinal data capturing its progression and response to clinical care remain limited. Most prior studies exclude treated patients or rely solely on subjective or cross-sectional data. This study investigates long-term changes in swallowing physiology and diet in a pragmatic, treated PD population.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed patients with PD who underwent at least two videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) ≥ 1 year apart at a tertiary laryngology center. Individuals with comorbid neurologic or structura

Influence of Habitual Tongue Posture on Tongue Pressure During Swallowing.

BACKGROUND: Tongue pressure is essential for bolus transport and oral stability during swallowing and serves as a clinical marker of tongue function. Habitual tongue posture, defined as the resting position of the tongue, is associated with swallowing efficiency and craniofacial development. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between habitual tongue posture and regional tongue pressure amplitudes. METHODS: We enrolled 52 healthy adult participants (26.0 [24.0-27.0] years). Habitual tongue posture was evaluated using standardised lateral cephalometric radiographs, measuring to

Swallowing dynamics of burdock treated with a chelating agent in patients with dysphagia.

Food modification is a common approach for patients with dysphagia. Treating vegetables with a chelating agent adjusts the hardness of food without altering its visual appearance. The current study aimed to evaluate the swallowing dynamics of burdock treated with a chelating agent (Chelate) compared with texture-modified soft burdock (SoB) and hard burdock (HaB) products in patients with dysphagia. Additionally, we investigated saliva secretion and physical properties of foods after chewing in healthy participants. We examined a total of 141 patients and 10 healthy participants. Swallowing fun

Jejunal Perforation Caused by Accidental Denture Swallowing: A Case Report.

Accidental denture ingestion, though rare, is a serious cause of acute abdomen. While most swallowed dentures pass through without complications, some can become impacted, leading to potentially severe complications. Diagnosis is challenging due to the radiolucent nature of dentures. We present a rare case of denture impaction in the jejunum, resulting in intestinal obstruction and perforation. A 70-year-old male presented with diffuse abdominal pain, vomiting, and constipation after accidentally swallowing part of his dentures 10 days earlier. The patient sought medical advice three and five

Swallowable expandable fibrous capsules for nonendoscopic sampling of esophageal cells.

Esophageal adenocarcinoma is a highly lethal malignancy with a 5-year survival rate of only 18.8%, largely due to late-stage diagnosis in the absence of effective population-wide screening. Survival improves to 42.9% when detected at a localized stage (I/II). More than 90% of esophageal adenocarcinoma cases are diagnosed without prior identification of Barrett's esophagus, its only known precursor. We present a swallowable, string-tethered capsule that expands in the stomach to enable atraumatic retrieval of esophageal epithelial cells without sedation or endoscopic guidance, completing the pr

Eating and swallowing care disparities in persons with dementia: A conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Eating and swallowing difficulties are prevalent and distressing among persons living with dementia (PLWD). These challenges may be especially burdensome for PLWD in lower-resourced settings, where environmental factors such as social support, health-care infrastructure, and food access are critical for meeting quality standards of eating and swallowing care. However, clinical practices and research methods have not sufficiently focused on the lived environment to promote high-quality, socially and culturally aligned management approaches. METHODS: To address this gap, we develo

French Translation and Validation of an Objective Swallowing Rating Scale: The PAS.

INTRODUCTION: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a severe swallowing disorder with consequences that can be life-threatening or impair quality of life. One of the major risks is laryngeal penetration, which can lead to the bolus being aspirated. It is best assessed and quantified using the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS), which is a validated tool in English. Our aim was to translate in French and validate the French version of the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (Fr-PAS). METHODS: Our study was 2-fold: (i) to assess the contribution of the Fr-PAS for French-speaking speech-language therapists (SLTs)
