NMDA and AMPA receptors are involved in the antidepressant-like activity of tianeptine in the forced swim test in mice.

It is known that tianeptine exhibits antidepressant-like activity. Its influence on the glutamatergic system is also known, but the mechanisms involved in this activity remain to be established. The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of the glutamate pathway in the antidepressant-like action of tianeptine. We investigated the effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptor ligands on tianeptine-induced activity in the forced swim test (FST) in mice. The antidepressant-like activity of tianeptine (30 m/kg, ip) was si

Repeated rat-forced swim test: reducing the number of animals to evaluate gradual effects of antidepressants.

The forced swim test (FST) is a pre-clinical test to short and long term treatment with antidepressant drugs (ADT), which requires between-subject designs. Herein a modified protocol of the FST using within-subject design (repeated rat-FST) was evaluated. Male Wistar rats were submitted to 15 min of swimming (Day 1: pretest) followed by three subsequent 5 min-swimming tests one week apart (Day 2: test, Day 7: retest 1, Day 14: retest 2). To determine the temporal and factorial characteristics of the variables scored in the repeated rat-FST, the protocol was carried out in untreated animals (E1…

[Investigation of an outbreak of acute respiratory illness due to exposure to chlorine gas in a public swimming pool].

A case-control study was designed to investigate a chemical accident that occurred in a swimming-pool in the summer of 2005. The aim was to describe the environmental factors involved in the accident, to assess the effect of chlorine gas on the respiratory system, and to perform a clinical and spirometric follow-up. The following interventions were carried out: environmental inspection, epidemiologic survey (including sociodemographic variables), location at the time of the accident, perception of an abnormal smell, and clinical and spirometric outcomes to assess respiratory function. Sixty-fi…

Chronic forced swim stress inhibits ultra-low dose morphine-induced hyperalgesia in rats.

Ultra-low doses of morphine (UL-morphine) induce hyperalgesia, which is assumed to be mediated by stimulatory G proteins (G(alphas)) signaling pathway. G(alphas) pathway inhibition and chronic stress both attenuate development of tolerance to analgesic effect of morphine. This study evaluated the effect of chronic stress on UL-morphine-induced hyperalgesia to find out if chronic stress interacts with the G(alphas) signaling pathway. Repeated daily forced swim stress was applied to induce chronic stress. UL-morphine (1 microg/kg, intraperitoneal)-induced hyperalgesia was assessed using the tail

Mechanisms of postinhibitory rebound and its modulation by serotonin in excitatory swim motor neurons of the medicinal leech.

Postinhibitory rebound (PIR) is defined as membrane depolarization occurring at the offset of a hyperpolarizing stimulus and is one of several intrinsic properties that may promote rhythmic electrical activity. PIR can be produced by several mechanisms including hyperpolarization-activated cation current (I(h)) or de-inactivation of depolarization-activated inward currents. Excitatory swim motor neurons in the leech exhibit PIR in response to injected current pulses or inhibitory synaptic input. Serotonin, a potent modulator of leech swimming behavior, increases the peak amplitude of PIR and d…

Influence of various acute stressors on the activity of adult male rats in a holeboard and in the forced swim test.

The effects of various acute stressors on the activity of adult male rats in a holeboard and in the forced swim test were studied. When tested immediately or 24 h after 1 h exposure to noise, restraint in tubes or tail shock, no changes in either defecation rate or activity in the holeboard were observed. In contrast, immediately after 1 h immobilization in wood-boards, a reduction of the number of areas crossed and the number of head-dips was found. The inhibitory effect of immobilization on head-dips persisted 24 h later. The behavior of the rats in the forced swim test was classified into t

Effects of cold-restraint and swim stress on convulsions induced by pentylenetetrazol and electroshock: influence of naloxone pretreatment.

The influence of two stressogenic conditions, restraint at 4 degrees C for 30 min (cold-restraint stress; CRS) or swimming at 20 degrees C for 3 min (swim stress; SS), on nociception and on convulsions triggered by different agents was assessed in mice. In saline-pretreated mice CRS and SS caused analgesia (hot-plate test, 56 degrees C), delayed the onset of convulsions induced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ, 100 mg/kg, IP) and aggravated convulsions elicited by maximal transcorneal electroshock (150 mA pulses at 60 Hz for 0.2 s). Pretreatment with naloxone (10 mg/kg, SC, 30 min prior to testing), …

[The effect of the removal of the superior cervical ganglia on the temporal dynamics of swimming and its sensitivity to an antidepressant in rats].

The reorganization of forced swimming time-course and behaviour in open field after superior cervical ganglionectomy in rats may be the result of disorders in adaptive processes. Behavioral shifts seem to be induced by the denervation of pineal gland with its adaptive properties. An increase of antidepressant drug (amitriptyline) activity was observed in both tests.

Molecular Identification of HR97 in the Swimming Crab Portunus trituberculatus and Its Potential Involvement in Ovarian Development.

Nuclear receptor HR97 is considered as a non-insect arthropod-specific receptor, but its roles in decapod reproduction remain poorly understood. Here, we identified and characterized an HR97 ortholog from the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus (PtHR97) and verified its placement within the NR1L nuclear receptor family by phylogenetic analysis. PtHR97 encodes a canonical nuclear receptor with a conserved DNA-binding domain (DBD) and ligand-binding domain (LBD). Quantitative PCR revealed predominant PtHR97 expression in the ovary and stage-dependent changes during ovarian development. Using …

Impacts of sewage treatment works versus diffuse pollution on bacterial water quality at rural wild swimming sites.

We investigated the factors shaping bacterial water quality at rural wild swimming sites located in catchments that are dominated by peatland, woodland, grassland, and arable land, with <3% (sub)urban land cover. We quantified faecal indicator bacteria and environmental DNA (eDNA) derived markers, including antimicrobial resistance traits (AMR), in the influent and effluent of a village sewage treatment works (STW) and across five river sampling locations. If formally designated and monitored, the wild swimming sites in this study would be unlikely to meet bathing standards, primarily due to e…

Dietary arginine modulates growth performance and testicular development across life stages in male swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus).

This study evaluated the effects of dietary arginine (Arg) on growth performance, testicular development, and apoptosis in juvenile and adult male swimming crabs (Portunus trituberculatus). Six isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated with graded Arg levels of 1.89% (control), 2.27%, 2.65%, 3.05%, 3.43%, and 3.80%, respectively. A total of 180 juvenile male crabs (initial weight: 4.35 ± 0.02 g) were randomly assigned to six treatments (three replicates of 10 crabs each) and cultured for 20 weeks. Four crabs per replicate were sampled at week 13 (juvenile stage), and the remaining si…

Tempo influences affective responses and perceived exertion during musical self-selected swimming in a randomized crossover trial.

Music serves as an ergogenic and affective aid in land-based exercise, yet its real‐time impact during swimming remains underexplored. Prior work has focused on pre‐performance arousal or post‐exercise recovery, leaving a gap in understanding how music tempo affects swimmers’ psychophysiological and emotional responses. This study examined the effects of no music (Beats Per Minute [BPM]), slow‐tempo (65 BPM), and fast‐tempo (120 BPM) music on affect (via the Exercise‐Induced Feeling Inventory [EFI] and Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale [PACES]), Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE), and stroke m…

Sex-dependent responses to moderate/low-intensity swimming and loaded ladder-climbing resistance exercise in mdx mice.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration, and the mdx mouse has been widely used to investigate disease mechanisms and therapeutic strategies, including the impact of different exercise modalities and sex-related responses on dystrophic muscle. This study compared moderate/low-intensity swimming and loaded ladder-climbing in male and female mdx, including sedentary control groups for each sex. Animals were subjected to a 4-week swimming (30 min/day, 4 days/week) or a 15-day ladder-climbing resistance protocol (6 sessions, 3…

Comprehensive analysis of pharmaceutical and illicit drugs contamination in thermal swimming pools: Occurrence, distribution, and potential impact.

The contamination of aquatic environments by micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs, is a growing global issue with significant implications for environmental and public health. This study addresses a critical knowledge gap by examining pharmaceutical and drug contamination in thermal swimming pools, which are often legally discharged into water bodies without treatment. A total of 49 water samples from 19 distinct thermal pools were analysed, targeting 101 compounds, including pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, and their metabolites. High-frequency contaminants were identif…

The Relationship Between Preseason Upper Extremity Function, Pain, and Training and Normalized Division III Collegiate Swimming Performance.

CONTEXT: Shoulder injuries comprise the largest proportion of swimming injuries, and a large percentage of swimmers participate with pain. Therefore, it is assumed that shoulder pain decreases performance, but researchers have not compared collegiate swimmers' performance with and without pain. OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine if individual swimmers' shoulder pain and function are associated with a change in normalized swimming performance over a season, (2) to determine if differences in normalized swimming performance exist among 3 collegiate teams, and (3) to qualitatively describe and compare…
