Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is the tendency to interpret ambiguous situations as threatening and having negative consequences, resulting in feelings of distress and anxiety. IU has been linked to a number of anxiety disorders, and anxiety felt in the face of uncertainty may result in maladaptive behaviors such as impulsive decision making. Although there is strong evidence that anxiety and impulsivity are risk factors for addiction, there is a paucity of research examining the role of IU in this disorder. The rate of opioid addiction, in particular, has been rising steadily in recent years

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health problems experienced by adolescents worldwide because of their evident significant impact on their quality of life and functioning. The generalized anxiety disorder item (GAD-7) was manufactured to identify the severity of self-reported anxiety symptoms. Efforts to address and screen for mental health problems in Rwanda have been limited, and the importance of screening for anxiety disorders is high. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Kinyarwanda version of the Generalized Anxiety

Blood concentrations of the satiety-inducing glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) were compared in 20 bulimic patients and 20 healthy controls to examine whether secretory impairment of the peptide could be involved in bulimia nervosa (BN). Basal GLP-1 concentrations were measured by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in blood samples taken four times over a 12-h period (08.00h, 12.00h, 16.00h, 20.00h) and seven times over a 3-h period following administration of a test meal. Eating-related and non-eating related patients' psychopathological aspects were measured by the use of a

BACKGROUND: There is general population evidence that physical exercise is effective in reducing the risk of depression and has positive effects on mood. Some prisons encourage exercise, but there is no evidence specific to this group on its benefits or the relative merits of different programmes.
AIMS: To test the effect of physical exercise on the psychological well-being of prisoners and to determine which mental disorders are most affected by physical activity.
METHODS: Sixty-four participants were randomly assigned across three groups: cardiovascular plus resistance training (CRT), high

OBJECTIVES: In the absence of a reliable biomarker, clinical decisions for a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) depend on asking patients to appraise and communicate their health status. Self-ratings of health (SRH) have proven a powerful and consistent predictor of health outcomes, but little is known about how they relate to those relevant to IBS (e.g., quality of life (QOL), IBS symptom severity). This study examined what psychosocial factors, if any, predict SRH among a cohort of more severe IBS patients.
METHODS: Subjects included 234 Rome III-p

OBJECTIVES: Refractory angina patients suffer debilitating chest pain despite optimal medical therapy and previous cardiovascular intervention. Cardiac rehabilitation is often not prescribed due to a lack of evidence regarding potential efficacy and patient suitability. A randomised controlled study was undertaken to explore the impact of cardiac rehabilitation on cardiovascular risk factors, physical ability, quality of life and psychological morbidity among refractory angina sufferers.
METHODS: Forty-two refractory angina patients (65.1 ± 7.3 years) were randomly assigned to an 8-week Phase

Women with breast cancer are at risk of being overweight/obese which may consequently increase mortality. Intuitive eating is an adaptive eating behavior which might be beneficial for weight outcomes. The present study validated the Persian Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) among overweight/obese Iranian females with breast cancer. Women who were overweight/obese with breast cancer (n = 762; mean ± SD age = 55.1 ± 5.7 years) completed the following questionnaires: IES-2, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE-6), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Short Form-12 (SF-12), Weight Bias Interna

Background: Growing evidence suggests that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is associated with poor affective flexibility, defined as the ability to switch between emotional aspects and non-emotional aspects of a situation. However, it is unclear whether affective inflexibility is valence-specific in GAD. Methods: Participants with GAD (n = 21) and non-clinical control participants (n = 28) were tested on an Affective Switching Task during which participants were asked to categorize pictures either by the valence or by the number of humans present in the pictures. Results: Individuals with G

Investigating the empirical support of various assessment instruments, the evidence based assessment approach expands the scientific basis of psychotherapy. Starting from Hunsley and Mash's evaluative framework, we critically reviewed the rating scales designed to measure social anxiety or phobia in youth. Thirteen of the most researched social anxiety scales for children and adolescents were identified. An overview about the scientific support accumulated by these scales is offered. Our main results are consistent with recent reviews that consider the Social Phobia and Anxiety Scale for Child

The neuropsychiatric status of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) was contrasted to that of patients with PBC and accompanying Sjogren's syndrome and to a matched group of normal controls. The subjects with PBC + Sjogren's syndrome had a more profound impairment on a battery of psychometric tests than did the subjects with PBC alone. In addition, they more frequently met the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis of anxiety disorder than did those with PBC alone.

The interindividual variation of temperament features (such as anxiety, neuroticism, harm avoidance) is determined, in particular, by allele polymorphism of genes involved in serotonin metabolism and has earlier been associated with the insertion/deletion polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene. Polymorphic alleles of the serotonin 2A receptor gene (5HTR2A) were tested for association with personality traits assessed with several tests. The T102C and A1438G polymorphisms were associated with a variation in emotionality, activity, and sociability, which are integral characteristics of te
