Hyalomma ticks on northward migrating birds in southern Spain: Implications for the risk of entry of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus to Great Britain.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a zoonotic virus transmitted by Hyalomma ticks, the immature stages of which may be carried by migratory birds. In this study, a total of 12 Hyalomma ticks were recovered from five of 228 migratory birds trapped in Spring, 2012 in southern Spain along the East Atlantic flyway. All collected ticks tested negative for CCHFV. While most birds had zero Hyalomma ticks, two individuals had four and five ticks each and the statistical distribution of Hyalomma tick counts per bird is over-dispersed compared to the Poisson distribution, demonstrating th

Xenodiagnosis in the wild: A methodology to investigate infectiousness for tick-borne bacteria in a songbird reservoir.

A crucial factor to predict the persistence and spread of infections in natural systems is the capacity of reservoir hosts to maintain the infection and transmit it to others. This is known to greatly vary within and between species and through time, although the latter part of the variation is often less well understood in the wild. Borrelia garinii is one of the causal agents of Lyme disease in humans and is transmitted among avian hosts by the hard tick Ixodes ricinus. Great tits are known to be a reservoir in Europe for B. garinii. For tick-borne pathogens like B. garinii, infectiousness o

Comparative proteome analysis of the midgut of Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) strains with contrasting resistance to ivermectin reveals the activation of proteins involved in the detoxification metabolism.

Rhipicephalus microplus is the most serious tick parasite for the livestock industry in tropical and subtropical regions. A cost-effective control method to manage the infestation of this parasite involves the use of chemicals such as ivermectin. However, massive overuse of ivermectin over recent decades has selected for ivermectin-resistant populations of R. microplus. Here, we carried out a comparative proteomic analysis of the midgut of ivermectin-susceptible versus ivermectin-resistant ticks using tandem mass tags coupled to synchronous precursor selection. In susceptible ticks, there was

Seasonal dynamics of spinose ear tick Otobius megnini associated with horse otoacariasis in Sri Lanka.

Otobius megnini is a one host, nidicolous soft tick (Family Argasidae) whose larvae and nymphs parasitize the external ear canal of many wild and domestic animals and occasionally humans. The present study was conducted to determine the seasonal dynamics of O. megnini infesting stabled horses in Nuwara Eliya racecourses. Ticks were sampled biweekly for two years from May 2013 to May 2015 from the ear canal of seven thoroughbred male horses. Weather data: temperature, rainfall and humidity for the study period were obtained from the Meteorological Department, Colombo. A total of 23, 287 ticks o

Phylogenomics of Tick Inward Rectifier Potassium Channels and Their Potential as Targets to Innovate Control Technologies.

This study was conducted to enhance the identification of novel targets to develop acaricides that can be used to advance integrated tick-borne disease management. Drivers for the emergence and re-emergence of tick-borne diseases affecting humans, livestock, and other domestic animals in many parts of the world include the increased abundance and expanded geographic distribution of tick species that vector pathogens. The evolution of resistance to acaricides among some of the most important tick vector species highlights the vulnerability of relying on chemical treatments for tick control to m

First detection and phylogenetic characterization of Jingmenvirus rhipicephali in cattle ticks from Yucatan, Mexico.

Jingmenvirus rhipicephali (Flaviviridae; Jingmenvirus) are viruses found mainly in ticks (Ixodidae) which represent a global public health risk not only due to their worldwide distribution but also because of the diversity of vertebrate animals on which they have been found, including humans. The presence and distribution of Orthoflavivirus, Jingmenvirus, and other flavi-like viruses in ticks in Mexico have not yet been studied. In this study, 2033 ticks of the genera Amblyomma, Rhipicephalus, and Ixodes were collected from 215 domestic animals (cattle, dogs, and horses) living on ranches in t

From flyways to foci: a systematic review and meta-analysis on the role of birds in the maintenance and global dispersal of ticks and tick-borne pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Birds (Aves) are considered to play important roles in the dissemination of ticks and tick-borne pathogens, yet the global extent of their contribution to vector maintenance and long-distance dispersal remains poorly quantified. This study provides a comprehensive global synthesis of bird-associated ticks (BATs) and bird-associated tick-borne pathogens (BATBPs) to characterize the epidemiological roles of birds and assess the resulting public health and biosecurity risks. METHODS: We systematically searched multiple bibliographic databases and GenBank up to February 2025 in accord

Flying ticks: anciently evolved associations that constitute a risk of infectious disease spread.

Ticks are important vectors of emerging zoonotic diseases affecting human and animal health worldwide. Ticks are often found on wild birds, which have been long recognized as a potential risk factor for dissemination of ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBP), thus raising societal concerns and prompting research into their biology and ecology. To fully understand the role of birds in disseminating some ticks species and TBP, it is important to consider the evolutionary relationships between birds, ticks and transmitted pathogens. In this paper we reviewed the possible role of birds in the dissem

Molecular detection and genetic analysis of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Bartonella in ectoparasites from domestic dogs in Sinaloa, Mexico.

Tick- and flea-borne diseases, including rickettsiosis, bartonellosis, and ehrlichiosis, have increased in incidence globally in recent years, affecting both humans and animals. Although the circulation of these pathogens has been documented in Mexico, information from the state of Sinaloa remains limited. Despite environmental conditions that favor zoonotic transmission, the diversity of dog ectoparasites and the pathogens they harbor remains poorly studied. This study aimed to determine the frequency of the main ectoparasites infesting domestic dogs in Sinaloa, Mexico, and to molecularly and

Serological and molecular detection of spotted fever group Rickettsia in a group of pet dogs from Luanda, Angola.

BACKGROUND: Infections with tick-borne rickettsiae can cause diseases well known in humans but still not so well characterized in dogs. Susceptibility to infection depends on the virulence of Rickettsia spp. and only a few of them have been described to cause disease in dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate the exposure to Rickettsia spp. among a group of pet dogs from Luanda, Angola. RESULTS: Out of 103 dogs included in the study, 62 (60.2%) were infested with ticks. Plasma specimens tested for serology by an immunofluorescence assay (IFA) revealed that six (5.8%) dogs had detectabl

Experimental transmission of Babesia microti by Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides.

BACKGROUND: Human babesiosis is considered an emerging threat in China. Dozens of human infections with Babesia microti have been reported recently, especially in southern China. However, the transmission vectors of this parasite in these areas are not well understood. Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, which is one of the dominant tick species in southern China, is a major vector of bovine babesiosis in China. However, whether this tick has the potential to transmit B. microti has not been tested. The present study experimentally investigated the transmission competence of B. microti through R.

Detection of tick-borne encephalitis virus in ixodid ticks collected in natural foci by time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay.

Time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TR-FIA) was used for the first time for evaluation of infestation of ixodid ticks with tick-borne encephalitis virus. Comparison of TR-FIA results with those obtained in enzyme immunoassay and by virus isolation confirmed the high efficacy of the method in question. Positive results of TR-FIA coincided with the data of virus isolation in 83.6% cases, the level of false-negative results did not exceed 1.2%, the overall time consumption amounted to about 1.2 hr.

Extracts of Calpurnia aurea leaves from southern Ethiopia attract and immobilise or kill ticks.

Calpurnia aurea extracts are used in southern Ethiopia to protect stock against ticks. Acetone, hexane and water leaf extracts of C. aurea collected in southern Ethiopia were tested for repellent/attractant and acaricidal properties on unfed adult Rhipicephalus pulchellus ticks. In contrast to many other plant species evaluated, C. aurea extracts did not have repellent properties, but rather had a slight attractant capacity. With 20% and 10% acetone extracts, all ticks were either killed or their mobility severely compromised after 1microl of extract was topically applied on the abdomen. At a
