PURPOSE: To establish whether trichoscopy can be useful in the differential diagnosis of patchy alopecia in children.
PROCEDURES: The study was a retrospective analysis (2012-2015) and included 68 patients under 6 years of age. The inclusion criteria were age and the presence of 1-3 alopecia patches. A total of 124 alopecia patches were examined with the use of a videodermoscope: 102 alopecia areata, 8 tinea capitis, 6 trichotillomania, 3 temporal triangular alopecia and 5 aplasia cutis congenita.

We report here the results of the 2016 epidemiological survey of dermatomycosis in Japan. In total, 6,776 cases were analyzed as follows: dermatophytosis, 5,772 cases (85.2%); candidiasis, 757 cases (11.2%); Malassezia infection, 235 cases (3.5%); and other fungal infections, 11 cases (0.2%). A 65 year old HIV-infected patient (CDC A2, diagnosed in 07/2008) presented with facial, erythematous infiltrated papular lesions. Consistent with progressive immunodeficiency a low CD4+ T-cell count and an increase of the viral load was seen simultaneously and an eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) was assumed. Though, the lesional biopsy revealed a follicular eosinophilic infiltration and endotrichial hyphae, proving for an infiltrating dermatophytosis. This shows how an infiltrating Tinea faciei is mimicking clinically and histologically an HIV-associated EPF of the face.
