Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows the different layers of the retina to be visualised in vivo. One of them is the so-called retinal nervous fibre layer (RNFL), which is made up of amyelinic axons from the ganglionic cells, and therefore part of the central nervous system. Recent studies have begun to examine possible applications of OCT in the field of neurology and, more specifically, the usefulness of measuring the thickness of the RNFL in multiple sclerosis (MS). In both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies it has been shown that a decrea…

INTRODUCTION: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a potential tool for diagnosis and follow-up in diseases of the anterior visual pathway in that it provides a reproducible and reliable quantification of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. A review of the literature was conducted to define the utility of OCT in neuro-ophthalmology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical applications of RNFL thickness measurement by OCT time domain were analyzed. The PubMed search engine enabled us to select the relevant publications, using the following keywords: "optic neuropathy", "retinal nerve fibe…

Rubella virus is the only member of the Rubivirus genus within the Togaviridae family and is the causative agent of the childhood disease known as rubella or German measles. Here, we report the use of cryo-electron tomography to examine the three-dimensional structure of rubella virions and compare their structure to that of Ross River virus, a togavirus belonging the genus Alphavirus. The ectodomains of the rubella virus glycoproteins, E1 and E2, are shown to be organized into extended rows of density, separated by 9 nm on the viral surface. We also show that the rubella virus nucleocapsid st…

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of astigmatism change on measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular thickness by Cirrus HD spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (Cirrus HD OCT; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA).
METHODS: A total of 30 right eyes from 30 healthy young subjects underwent RNFL and macular thickness measurements using Cirrus HD OCT. Measurements were performed at the baseline state and induced with-the-rule (WTR) and against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism states by wearing toric soft contact lenses (+1.50 -3.25 diopter × 90° and +1.50 -3.25 diopter × 180…

MDCT has become a fundamental tool for determining the causes of acute abdomen. CT is considered the imaging technique of choice in the diagnostic workup of both localized and diffuse acute abdomen, except in patients in whom acute cholecystitis or acute gynecological disease is suspected and in children, adolescents, and pregnant patients, in whom ultrasonography is the imaging technique of choice. Plain-film X-ray examination has been relegated to the initial management of renal colic, suspected foreign bodies, and intestinal obstruction. One of the drawbacks of MDCT is its use of ionizing r

Digital volume tomography (DVT) is an advancement of panoramic tomography used in dentistry. DVT enables precise display of fine osseous structures without any disturbing artefacts. This makes its application interesting in the field of the lateral, anterior skull base and paranasal sinuses, as well as for the diagnosis of nasal bone fractures. The tomograms can be completed according to need by volume rendering or panoramic slices within a short time. Assuming they have the appropriate technical qualifications in radiation protection, ENT specialists are even able to perform tomography indepe…

Modern MSCT with its broad availability and rapid examination times is the preferred modality in the initial evaluation of neurologic emergencies and by its continual development has become more important within recent years. With increased spatial resolution and new post-processing techniques, non-invasive MSCT angiography is seen to increasingly replace diagnostic DSA. Multidetector CTA is a suitable method for the evaluation of intracranial aneurysms, carotid artery stenoses, arterial dissections, as well as cerebral venous and basilar artery thromboses. Multimodal CT (non-enhanced CCT, CTA

Extramedullary plasmacytomas are malignant neoplasms of the plasmatic cells of the soft tissues. Primary pulmonary plasmacytoma is the rarest type of extramedullary plasmacytoma. The radiologic findings are unspecific and the diagnosis is histologic. Chest CT is useful for confirming its location and planning surgery. We present a case of primary endobronchial plasmacytoma in an adult diagnosed at histology. We describe the findings at plain-film chest X-ray and at CT, and we analyze the usefulness of 3D reconstructions for planning surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of multidetector spiral CT in patients with blunt chest trauma.
METHODS: Forty-two patients (38 males and four females), age range from 6 to 80 years, of blunt chest trauma were evaluated with multidetector computed tomogram (MDCT) after initial radiographs and the results were tabulated.
RESULTS: The most common mode of injury was motor vehicle accidents (64%). On computed tomography (CT), major injuries were haemothorax (83.33%), consolidation (66.6%), rib fractures (61.90%), pneumothorax (54.76%), diaphragmatic injury (30.95%), lung contusions (28.57%), spina…

Abdominal emergencies encompass traumatic events in the region of the abdomen as well as the clinical term acute abdomen. Multidetector CT (MDCT) represents one of the most important imaging modalities for detection and correct diagnosis in such abdominal emergencies. Based on the acquired data MDCT allows a stable imaging of the abdomen in an extremely short time even in critically ill patients. Multiplanar reconstructions can be created based on the high resolution data allowing an impressive visualization of the pathology. In this review article the most important abdominal pathologies of t

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory disease with combined features of optic neuritis and myelitis. This pathologic entity may induce severe disability, including visual loss and paraplegia. Other than clinical follow-up, there is no marker for severity of the disease.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in NMO and to determine whether this new technique could be a good marker of axonal loss in NMO.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-five patients with NMO or at a high risk for NMO (having optic neuritis or myelitis and…

AIM: To describe the CT features of fibrosing mediastinitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical notes, histology, and CT images from 12 patients with fibrosing mediastinitis were reviewed. Clinical data regarding the presentation and suspected aetiology were correlated with location of mediastinal disease, calcification, effect on mediastinal structures, and additional pulmonary findings on computed tomography (CT).
RESULTS: The mean age was 40.5 years, with seven female and five male patients. The most common presenting symptom was shortness of breath. Fibrosing mediastinitis diffusely inf…

PURPOSE: Computed tomography (CT) can be used to triage suspected scaphoid fractures. This study assessed intraobserver and interobserver reliability and positive and negative predictive values of CT for the diagnosis of a nondisplaced scaphoid fracture.
METHODS: Eight observers evaluated CT scans from 30 patients (13 with nondisplaced scaphoid fractures, 17 with no scaphoid fractures) for the presence or absence of a fracture. Five observers evaluated the scans a second time. Statistical analyses included intraobserver and interobserver reliability and diagnostic characteristics.
RESULTS: C…

PURPOSE: To report the optical coherence tomographic (OCT) features in eyes with tuberculous choroidal granuloma.
DESIGN: Interventional case series.
METHODS: Nine eyes of nine patients with tuberculous granuloma of the choroid were studied using OCT scans.
RESULTS: OCT scan through the lesions revealed a distinctive feature of attachment between the retinal pigment epithelial- choriocapillaris layer and the neurosensory retina over the granuloma ("contact" sign). This was associated with surrounding subretinal fluid and inflammatory infiltrate in the deeper retinal layers.
CONCLUSIONS: OC
