Role of the macular optical coherence tomography scan in neuro-ophthalmology.

BACKGROUND: Recent improvements in optical coherence tomographic (OCT) resolution and automated segmentation software have provided a means of relating visual pathway damage to structural changes in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and corresponding soma of the ganglion cells in the inner layers of the macula and also in the outer photoreceptor layer in the macula. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Studies correlating retinal structure with function are reviewed in the context of OCT in optic nerve and retinal disorders. RESULTS: Recently published work provides evidence showing a strong relationshi

Corneal responses to eye rubbing with spectral domain optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: Surprisingly, a significant reduction (18.4%) in epithelial thickness was found after 15 seconds of eye rubbing measured using Holden-Payor optical pachometer reported in the literature. Hence, we aimed at studying the effects of compressive and shearing pressure associated with eye rubbing on total corneal, epithelial and Bowman's membrane thickness using spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT). METHODS: SD-OCT (Spectralis; Heidelberg Engineering) was used to acquire cross-sectional images of the cornea. Central total-corneal thickness (TCT), epithelial thickness (ET) and Bowman's membrane thi

Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography of the choroid in choroidal osteoma.

The authors report spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings in a patient with decalcifying choroidal osteoma accompanied by a choroidal neovascular membrane and serous retinal detachment. A 13-year-old girl was found to have a choroidal osteoma in the left eye. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by B-scan ultrasonography, computed tomography, and fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography. The SD-OCT findings over the decalcified portion included serous retinal detachment, photoreceptor outer segment disorganization, retinal pigment epithelial atrophy, deformed Bruch

Assessment of scleral spur visibility with anterior segment optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: To develop a grading system to evaluate the scleral spur visibility and to investigate the association between this and the angle width. METHODS: Sixty healthy normal subjects (33 with open angles and 27 with narrow angles on dark room gonioscopy) underwent anterior segment imaging with the Visante OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). The anterior chamber angles at 12-o' clock hour positions were imaged and analyzed. The scleral spur at each clock hour position was independently graded by 2 observers. A scleral spur visibility score (SSVS) of 2 denotes clear visibility of the sclera

High-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography images of Alström syndrome.

Alström syndrome is a multisystemic disorder characterized by cone-rod dystrophy, hearing loss, obesity, insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dilated cardiomyopathy, and progressive hepatic and renal dysfunction. The cone-rod retinal dystrophy usually develops within a few weeks after birth. The authors examined a young boy with Alström syndrome by means of microperimetry and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Instead of the typical alterations observed in cone-rod dystrophies, the characteristics of the central foveal tissue suggest signs of reti

Optical coherence tomography: another useful tool in a neuro-ophthalmologist's armamentarium.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) affords clinicians the ability to quantify the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), which is useful in managing diseases of the optic nerve. The purpose of this review is to coalesce the current literature on the use of OCT in neuro-ophthalmology to enhance its use in clinical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: OCT's advancement into spectral domain refined its ability to measure the RNFL by increasing scanner speed. Although OCT was shown to be superior to other instruments in measuring the RNFL in certain conditions, it lacks laser

Laryngeal epithelial thickness: a comparison between optical coherence tomography and histology.

OBJECTIVES: Optical coherence tomography, an imaging modality using near-infrared light, produces cross-sectional tissue images with a lateral pixel resolution of 10 microm. However, normative data is first needed on epithelial thickness for lesion characterisation, and, to date, little exists. The purpose of our study is to measure normal laryngeal epithelial thickness by in vivo optical coherence tomography, and compare these values to those obtained from fixed ex-vivo laryngectomy specimens. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective at a single medical center in California, United States. PARTICIPA

Anterior segment imaging: ultrasound biomicroscopy and anterior segment optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent advances in ocular imaging have included high-resolution techniques for visualizing the anterior segment and angle structures. This review will describe the two main anterior segment imaging modalities and summarize their applications, strengths and weaknesses. RECENT FINDINGS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy and more recently anterior segment optical coherence tomography are imaging modalities that can be used to obtain two-dimensional images of the angle and surrounding structures. Ultrasound biomicroscopy has the advantage of being able to illustrate the ciliary body and

Nail thickness measurements using optical coherence tomography and 20-MHz ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Nail diseases are often troubling to the patient and may present a diagnostic challenge to the dermatologist. Biopsies from the nail may be required although often perceived uncomfortable by the patient and potentially scarring. Noninvasive technologies are therefore of particular interest in the study of nails. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an optical imaging modality which may provide improved data. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates nail morphology and thickness in OCT images in comparison with high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) imaging of the nail. METHODS: Ten healthy vo

Macular thickness after uneventful cataract surgery determined by optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Using standardized macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the postoperative period, subclinical changes in macular thickness can be detected. With this method, postoperative development of macular thickness in healthy eyes is evaluated. The repeatability of the method and the influence of selected surgical (phaco time and phaco energy) and biometric parameters (axial length and anterior chamber depth) on the results were assessed. METHODS: In a prospective study, 33 patients without macular pathology in both eyes were examined. Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL)

Macular and extramacular optical coherence tomography findings in X-linked retinoschisis.

Two brothers with X-linked retinoschisis were evaluated using optical coherence tomography. Macular cleavage was observed at the inner nuclear layer. Retinal nerve fiber layer loss or detachment was observed outside the macular area, even in areas of clinically normal retina. Macular thickening and cavitation with multiple septa was characteristic, decreasing rapidly from the center toward the macular periphery and being more pronounced in the younger patient. No abnormal vitreomacular relationship or traction over the macular and extramacular schisis areas was observed. Optical coherence tomo
