Although actinomyces has been identified in between 1.77% and 37% of resected tonsils its possible role in recurrent acute tonsillitis has received little attention. A histological and bacteriological study of 129 pairs of tonsils from patients with recurrent acute tonsillitis showed actinomyces to be present in 29.5%. The role of flexible endosonography in diagnosis of acute tonsillitis and their complications was investigated in 59 patients. Our results show that flexible endosonography enables the examiner to differentiate acute tonsillitis from peritonsillitis and paratonsillar abscess. In particular, abscesses of retrotonsillar spread possibly leading to life-threatening complications can be detected in an early stage.

Beta-streptococci isolated from patients with acute tonsillitis were tested for penicillin tolerance defined as an MBC/MIC ratio greater than or equal to 16. 11/18 strains recovered from patients with clinical treatment failure were tolerant to penicillin in comparison with 0/15 strains from successfully treated patients.
