Minimally Invasive Single Implant Treatment (M.I.S.I.T.) based on ridge preservation and contour augmentation in patients with a high aesthetic risk profile: one-year results.

AIM: To evaluate the 1-year outcome of Minimally Invasive Single Implant Treatment (M.I.S.I.T.) based on ridge preservation and contour augmentation in patients with a high aesthetic risk profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Periodontally healthy non-smoking patients with a failing tooth in the anterior maxilla (15-25) were selected. All were in need of a single implant and demonstrated high risk for aesthetic complications given mid-facial recession at the failing tooth and/or a buccal bone dehiscence and/or a thin-scalloped gingival biotype. Patients without mid-facial recession (NRG) received f

Pulp-dentin biology in restorative dentistry. Part 2: initial reactions to preparation of teeth for restorative procedures.

Pulpal complications involving inflammation, degradation, and necrosis are the result of a series of traumatic injuries. The restorative dentist must minimize the trauma to dentin and pulp inflicted during clinical procedures, including that inflicted during tooth preparation. Part 11 of this series discusses the structural and physiologic changes in the pulp-dentin complex that result from crown and cavity preparation and the clinical implication of these changes.

Management of Root Perforation due to Internal Resorption: A 1-year Follow-up Study.

Diagnosing tooth resorption is critical for effective management. Internal resorption is a rare phenomenon, presenting with a pathognomonic clinical sign of a "pink spot" in the crown. In case of infection-induced tooth resorption, endodontic therapy needs to be carried out to decrease bacterial load within the pulp space and facilitate repair of resorbed tooth structure. Following inflammation of the pulpal tissue, clastic cells infiltrate the pulp chamber along with physiological blood supply and thereby initiate the process of internal tooth resorption. Tooth resorption involves two phases:

Resolution of Odontogenic Sinus Pathosis by Endodontic Microsurgery.

A case report is presented, in which a tooth with a chronic apical abscess that has caused a maxillary sinusitis was treated with an endodontic microsurgery. A 65-year-old female patient reported discomfort in a maxillary tooth gingiva. Clinically, a dental metal-ceramic bridge with adequate marginal adaptation, involving teeth from maxillary right canine to maxillary right second molar, was observed. The periapical radiograph showed the adequate adaptation of the crown and post in the maxillary right first premolar, an apical lesion, and the heavy thickening of the maxillary sinus floor mucos

Odontogenic tumors that mimic a dentigerous cyst.

Hyperplastic follicular tissue and a dentigerous cyst are the two most common entities associated with the crown of an impacted tooth. However, other diagnostic possibilities, including odontogenic tumors should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of a pericoronal radiolucency. This article presents three cases of radiolucent lesions that were histologically diagnosed as an odontogenic tumor, and stresses the importance of histological evaluation of all pericoronal radiolucencies.

Influence of intraradicular post and crown ferrule on the fracture strength of endodontically treated teeth.

The aim of this study was to investigate the fracture strength of endodontically treated teeth restored with different posts and variable ferrule heights. Sixty freshly extracted human canines were treated endodontically and randomly assigned to 6 groups (n=10), being restored with custom-made cast post-and-core (CP0 and CP3 groups), prefabricated post and composite resin core (PF0 and PF3 groups), and composite resin (CR0 and CR3 groups). The CP0, PF0 and CR0 groups presented no ferrule and the CP3, PF3 and CR3 presented 3 mm of coronal structure. All teeth were restored with full metal crown

Supernumerary primary tooth with facial and palatal talon cusps: a case report.

Talon cusp is a tooth anomaly originating from the tooth's lingual surface in most cases. To date, very rare cases have been reported documenting talon cusps both on the facial and palatal surface of an affected tooth in the dental literature. The purpose of this case report was to describe the facial and palatal talon cusps on an ectopic supernumerary primary maxillary tooth. A micro-CT investigation indicated no pulpal extensions within facial and palatal talon cusps.

Composite resin as a means of improving the appearance of periodontally involved teeth.

Composite resin has become established not only as a material for restoring carious teeth, but also as a means of veneering discoloured or misshapen teeth. This case report describes how composite resin was used to improve the appearance of a tooth which had become unsightly as the result of a combination of gingival recession and attrition. This was done by veneering both the root surface and the cervical area of the crown.

Non-surgical treatment of maxillary lateral incisor double dens invaginatus type Ⅲ with apical periodontitis.

Dental invagination is an abnormality of the crown or root development induced during tooth germ development when the enamel-forming apparatus or epithelial root sheath overpopulates and folds into the papilla. In severe cases, the invaginated channels are connected to the pulp and periodontal tissues, often causing endodontic and periapical diseases. The complex anatomical pattern of this disease adds difficulty in its preoperative diagnosis and clinical operation. In this paper, we report a case of non-surgical treatment assisted by cone beam CT and microscopy for maxillary lateral incisor d

The flaws in tooth root resorption assessment algorithms: the role of source position.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this project was to analyse the effects of X-ray source location on mathematical compensations used in the clinical assessment of external apical root resorption (EARR). METHODS: Using geometric constructions, governing equations were derived to express the relationships between actual tooth, root and crown lengths, and their image sizes on "before" and "after" radiographs. RESULTS: Good agreement was found between calculated and published experimental results. More importantly, errors associated with the assessment methods are demonstrated. CONCLUSION: It is esta

BEWE 2.0: Basic erosive tooth wear examination revisited: Introducing an additional level for more severe erosive tooth wear.

The Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) was proposed in 2008 as a screening tool for tooth wear. The original aim was to create a simple, convenient screening tool to prompt a clinician to record tooth wear. It was not intended to be accurate and was matched to the basic periodontal examination (BPE). Since that time it has been incorporated into dental practice software and has been adopted by Dentists. But the original screening tool created a ceiling effect, particularly at grade 3 which marked a significant progression from slight wear over the surface to almost complete obliteration of

A Dentigerous Cyst Associated With a Developing Mandibular Premolar in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report of a Rare Entity.

Dentigerous cysts are developmental odontogenic cysts commonly associated with impacted teeth; however, their occurrence in young children involving developing premolars is relatively rare. This report describes the case of an eight-year-old male who presented with pain and swelling in the lower left posterior region of the jaw. Clinical examination revealed a grossly carious primary molar with buccal cortical expansion. Radiographic findings showed a well-defined unilocular radiolucency associated with the crown of the developing mandibular second premolar, causing displacement of the tooth b

Management of a pediatric patient with dental anomalies and its effect on psychosocial status: a case report.

Managing multiple dental anomalies in the anterior region of the dental arch presents unique and complex challenges. This case report describes using a multidisciplinary approach to manage a child with not only a fused tooth with a supernumerary but also the presence of other supernumerary teeth in the same place. In this case, deviation from the standard management of a fused permanent anterior tooth, an anchor for aesthetics, by extracting it because of crown root complexity and allowing a supernumerary to erupt into its place made the difference in the successful outcome. However, this cond
