Experimental study on the compressive strength of fixed prosthetic restorations on tooth preparations with or without horizontal preparation.

Fixed prosthetic restorations, particularly those made entirely of zirconia, are widely used in clinical dental practice for the restoration of natural teeth. Their success largely depends on the design of the tooth preparation, especially the type of finish line, as well as the restoration's ability to withstand occlusal forces during mastication. Over 12 months, a total of 21 extracted teeth were initially collected, from which six were selected for this study. To achieve the objective of the study, three teeth were prepared with a horizontal finish line (shoulder), and the remaining three w

Analysis of the performance of different orthodontic devices for mandibular symphyseal distraction osteogenesis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of different orthodontic devices for mandibular symphyseal distraction osteogenesis (MSDO). Two performance parameters were analysed, the first of which concerned the stability guaranteed by a distractor in the fracture gap under mastication loads and the second the level of reliability with which a distractor transfers a given expansion to the mandibular bone, inasmuch as the more reliable the device the smaller the difference between the degree of expansion provided to the device and the displacement achieved on the mandibular arch. He

Pulp canal obliteration after traumatic injuries in permanent teeth - scientific fact or fiction?

Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) is a frequent finding associated with pulpal revascularization after luxation injuries of young permanent teeth. The underlying mechanisms of PCO are still unclear, and no experimental scientific evidence is available, except the results of a single histopathological study. The lack of sound knowledge concerning this process gives rise to controversies, including the most suitable denomination. More than a mere semantic question, the denomination is an important issue, because it reflects the nature of this process, and directly impacts the treatment plan decision

The Comprehensive AOCMF Classification System: Mandible Fractures-Level 3 Tutorial.

This tutorial outlines the details of the AOCMF image-based classification system for fractures of the mandibular arch (i.e. the non-condylar mandible) at the precision level 3. It is the logical expansion of the fracture allocation to topographic mandibular sites outlined in level 2, and is based on three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques/computed tomography (CT)/cone beam CT). Level 3 allows an anatomical description of the individual conditions of the mandibular arch such as the preinjury dental state and the degree of alveolar atrophy. Trauma sequelae are then addressed: (1) tooth injuri

Intraradicular splinting of a horizontally fractured central incisor: a case report.

This case report presents the endodontic management of a horizontally fractured right incisor involving healing with granulation tissue using an intraradicular splinting technique. We also discuss the spontaneous healing of the fractured left central incisor with calcified tissue. A composite resin splint was made for all of the upper anterior teeth. The root canal of the right incisor was temporarily filled with calcium hydroxide slurry. The intraradicular splinting involved placing a file in the canal. Sealer was introduced into the canal and then a no. 110 K file was fixed in the canal with

Oral myiasis in a captive hippopotamus.

Causes of dental infections can be related to failed dental eruption, malocclusion, abrasion, fractures with or without exposure of the dental pulp, and periodontal disease. Reports of oral myiasis in megavertebrates in captivity are infrequent, perhaps due to the difficulty in observing the oral cavity in such species. This report describes a case of oral myiasis in an adult male hippopotamus in the gingival area and alveolar mucosa of the left mandibular canine tooth.

Isolated fracture of the coronoid process following a molar extraction: A rare case report.

Isolated coronoid process fractures are uncommon, and iatrogenic isolated fractures are extremely rare. This case describes a displaced fracture of an isolated coronoid process thought to be due to excessive force applied by a dentist that had been overlooked and left untreated for about a month. The patient was a woman in her late 50's and she had undergone a molar extraction. Her dentist had confused her symptoms of trismus, pain, and facial oedema with the complex tooth extraction procedure. Following a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan we showed that the mandibular coronoid process

Cyclic fatigue testing of denture teeth for bulk fracture.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical experience with implant-supported dentures indicates that fracture and chipping of teeth are becoming an issue. Tooth fracture and chipping rates of approximately 2.5% per year are being experienced at one university. There has been no standardized test developed for bulk fracture or chipping of denture teeth. Such a test would aid in the development of improved teeth and in their evaluation. METHODS: Central incisor teeth were embedded in acrylic and loaded on incisal edges at 90° to their long axes. Teeth tested included ones commercially available and two sets made fro

Long-term oral bisphosphonates delay healing after tooth extraction: a single institutional prospective study.

UNLABELLED: Tooth extraction in patients receiving bisphosphonates is thought to be a risk factor for osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ); however, ONJ did not develop, even when tooth extraction was performed with continued oral bisphosphonate therapy. A drug holiday from bisphosphonates before tooth extraction may not be necessary. INTRODUCTION: It is controversial whether bisphosphonate withdrawal is necessary prior to invasive procedures such as tooth extraction in order to prevent bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical safety of cont

Trauma-induced dentigerous cyst involving an inverted impacted mesiodens: case report.

There have been only a small number of studies on the association of dentigerous cysts with supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this article was to report the case of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted inverted mesiodens that developed secondary to trauma to its predecessor, a non-vital permanent maxillary central incisor. As a consequence of trauma, the central incisor's root development was prematurely arrested and the open apex lay close to the follicle of the underlying inverted mesiodens. The negligent attitude of both the child and parent in seeking dental treatment was a con

Effects of fissure length and angle on the fracture modes of 3D printed teeth model: Insights from DIC-based fracture tests and meshless numerical simulations.

To investigate the influences of teeth fissure properties on their failure modes, 3D Printing technology is used to prepare the teeth models. The strain distributions of the teeth model surfaces at each moment of the loading processes are obtained by the DIC technique. And the progressive failure processes as well as the stress distributions of the teeth models are simulated by the improved Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) Method. Experimental results show that under the action of the steel ball, the teeth models mainly produce two types of cracks: The tensile cracks along the pre-existin

Comparative Assessment of Fracture Resistance of Conservative and Conventional Access Cavity Preparation in Primary Molars: An In Vitro Study.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment is often necessary to preserve primary molars in children with dental caries. The design of the access cavity is a key factor influencing the tooth's fracture resistance. Hence, this study was conducted to compare the fracture resistance of primary molars prepared with conservative and conventional access cavity (CAC) designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 45 extracted human primary mandibular second molars were divided into three groups randomly: group I [conservative access cavity (ConAC)], group II (CAC), and group III (intact teeth, control). Biomechanical Behavior of Maxillary Premolars with Non-carious Cervical Lesions: Influence of Minimally Invasive Endodontic Access and Restoration Protocols.

INTRODUCTION: Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) compromise tooth structure and may cause inflammation requiring endodontic treatment. This study evaluated the influence of endodontic access design on fracture resistance, failure patterns, and stress distribution in maxillary premolars with wedge-shaped NCCLs restored using different restorative strategies. METHODS: One hundred maxillary premolars were divided into ten groups based on access type (sound and NCCL with traditional, minimally invasive, and no access) and restorative material (provisional, conventional composite, high-viscosity
