BACKGROUND: The forces of the jaw muscles are transmitted to the dentition and the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Imbalances in the force distribution can lead to occlusal trauma, excessive tooth wear, or TMJ osteoarthritis, making the assessment of bite force (BF) distribution clinically significant. Existing thin-film BF measurement devices capture the magnitudes of a system of BFs distributed at multiple occlusal contacts (OCs), but fail to capture their directional components, limiting their clinical utility. This study aimed to develop a method for representing BF systems as a wrench, a

With an exclusive diet of hard-shelled mollusks, the black drum fish (Pogonias cromis) exhibits one of the highest bite forces among extant animals. Here we present a systematic microstructural, chemical, crystallographic, and mechanical analysis of the black drum teeth to understand the structural basis for achieving the molluscivorous requirements. At the material level, the outermost enameloid shows higher modulus (Er = 126.9 ± 16.3 GPa, H = 5.0 ± 1.4 GPa) than other reported fish teeth, which is attributed to the stiffening effect of Zn and F doping in apatite crystals and the preferential

Tooth wear and pain are the primary concerns of patients undergoing periodontal scaling. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of a new magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler and a traditional piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler on tooth surface roughness and calculus removal and to determine their impacts on patient discomfort during supragingival cleaning. This article had two parts: an in vitro study and a clinical study. In the in vitro study, thirty teeth with subgingival calculus were randomly assigned to two scaling treatment groups: magnetostrictive scalers (n = 15) and piezoelect

PURPOSE: Use of three-dimensional finite element to analyze stress distribution and transient displacement of mandibular first molar both at the occlusal surface level, to investigate the biomechanical basis of vertical root fracture occurring in the mesial root.
METHODS: Mimics finite element software was used to build the horizontal and tilt abrasion of the mandibular first permanent molar. Each status was then divided into 4 kinds of wearing degree and 8 models were then established including sliced 1, sliced 2, sliced 3, sliced 4 and miter 5°,miter10°,miter15°,miter20° respectively. 200 N

The purpose of the current retrospective chart review is to describe the outcomes of conservative or surgical treatment of stage 2 bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ). 14 charts (mean patient age 69.07 ± 10.37 years) describing 19 BRONJ stage 2 sites were identified. According to the treatment protocol, all patients received conservative treatment. Surgical treatment was delivered only to sites that did not respond to conservative treatment. Conservative treatment alone was delivered to 11 sites in 8 patients (mean postoperative follow-up 17.6 ± 9.4 months). Surgical treat

With tooth loss, there is increased bone loss of the alveolus. In some cases alveolar bone loss can be severe. Severe bone loss may cause difficulty for patients wearing a conventional prosthesis or being restored with dental implants. Severe alveolar bone loss can result in malnutrition, poor self-esteem, multiple dental visits for failed prosthesis, and jaw fracture. In many cases, patients with loss of alveolar bone height or width may require reconstructive procedures. Vertical ridge augmentation remains a challenge in the reconstruction of the atrophic maxilla and mandible. The main probl

The occurrence of pain is often closely related to the psychological status, and the threshold for pain tolerance varies from patient to patient. In short, the factors affecting orthodontic pain are diverse and have individual differences. Tooth pain after the first force of intraoral malocclusion orthodontic treatment is one of the common complications of fixed orthodontic treatment, which often affects the outcome of treatment of patients with malocclusion and their subjective satisfaction with fixed orthodontic treatment. The purpose of the paper was to investigate the basic patterns and in

As a dentist our main aim should be prevention which not only includes prevention of caries and or periodontal disease but also prevention of residual alveolar bone loss after teeth are extracted. Today with greater stress on preventive measures, the dental profession has expanded this preventive concept into Prosthodontics. Preventive Prosthodontics emphasizes the importance of any procedure that can delay or eliminate the future Prosthodontic problem and stop further progression of oral disease and prevent the loss of remaining tissues. The Residual Ridge Resorption (RRR) is an inevitable co

Squash belongs to sporting activities with medium risk of causing dental trauma. Because of high velocity, close body contact and the use of rackets the injury potential in squash has increased. The aim of this work was to conduct a comparative study between Switzerland, Germany and France on a number of issues: the frequency of dental and facial injuries in squash, athletes' habits of wearing mouthguards, as well as the general level of information about emergency measures after a dental trauma and the resulting consequences. Using a standardized questionnaire a total of 653 individuals, 600

UNLABELLED: The dental management of the elderly individual is becoming more of an issue in both general dental practice and specialist prosthodontic practice. This is because, in general, the population is living longer and often elderly patients are retaining their natural teeth into their old age. In addition, there are often related significant medical, social and oro-dental issues that require consideration.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The dental management of the elderly patient is an increasing problem. This paper seeks to consider the main relevant issues pertaining to this important subject

BACKGROUND: A clinical scenario in the esthetic zone is the presence of short clinical crowns, which, in the absence of occlusal wear and other injuries, is referred to as altered passive eruption (APE). The presence of APE can lead to esthetic issues, which can impact the patient's smile harmony. In esthetically demanding cases, APE must be addressed prior to or in conjunction with implant therapy, and failure to do so can result in esthetic complications and failure in prosthetic planning. This case report exhibits a digital workflow in treating such patients to achieve optimal outcomes.

RATIONAL: Dental abnormalities can occur at any stage of tooth development. Of these abnormalities, true generalized microdontia is a rare condition in which all teeth are smaller than normal, while hypodontia is defined as the absence of 1 to 5 teeth. As far as we are aware, no article has reported a case of the non-syndromic occurrence of true generalized microdontia with hypodontia.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 9-year-old girl who had no systemic diseases presented with congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors bilaterally and small teeth involving the whole dentition.

The sable (Martes zibellina) is a wildlife reservoir for Trichinella spp. in Siberian forest ecosystems, but age-related patterns of larval distribution, sex ratio, and encapsulation status remain poorly characterized. We examined 100 sable carcasses collected during the 2025-2026 hunting season in the Ulan-Ude forest region (Buryatia, Russia). Animals were classified as juvenile, subadult, or adult based on tooth wear and body weight. Trichinella larvae were recovered from diaphragm, masseter, and temporal muscles by artificial digestion. Overall prevalence was 14.0% (95% CI: 8.5-22.1%) and i

Temporomandibular disorder is the most common form of orofacial pain. Today it affects 15% of the adult population and 7% of adolescents. It is characterised by pain originating from the muscles and/or the temporomandibular joint and vocal symptoms accompanying jaw movements, as well as muscle fatigue, lockjaw and tooth wear. Chronic pain due to jaw dysfunction can lead to the deterioration of the patient’s psychological state and negatively affect their quality of life. As the temporomandibular joint is closely related to dentition, any modification of the existing bite must be taken into acc

INTRODUCTION: Oculo-dento-digital dysplasia (ODDD, OMIM# 164200) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutation in Gap junction alpha gene that encodes connexin 43 (Cx43) protein. In this paper, the case of a 16-year-old boy is reported who presented with the complaint of toothache. Examination revealed unusual facial features, i.e., long narrow nose, hypertelorism, prominent epicanthal folds along with syndactyly and camptodactyly. We have also compiled available dental literature on ODDD that will help clinicians in early diagnosis and management of this condition.
