Vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA)-based management of a periodontal defect with limited bony support.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal regenerative outcomes are strongly influenced by defect morphology. Maintaining a stable regenerative space under soft-tissue pressure is challenging when treating defects with limited bony support. METHODS: A 26-year-old female patient presented with hypersensitivity and bleeding during toothbrushing in the maxillary right posterior region. Following initial periodontal therapy, a localized periodontal defect with limited bony support and associated supra-alveolar and interdental-tissue loss persisted between the maxillary right second premolar and first molar. A vest…

Impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on the oral health behaviour of young children.

AIM: Children up to the age of 10 are dependant primarily on their caregivers for oral care; COVID-19 lockdowns may have disrupted this care. We therefore assessed whether the COVID-19 lockdown affected routine parental oral care for their children. METHODS: A short online survey regarding oral health behaviour and changes in the home setting during the COVID-19 lockdown was emailed to parents (n = 782, response 15%) participating in an existing study 'Healthy Teeth All Aboard (HTAA)'. RESULTS: During the lockdown, 29% of parents reported that they skipped their children's toothbrushing more…

Effectiveness of Different Oral Health Interventions on Plaque and Gingivitis Incidence in Children Under Seven Years of Age: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Oral health is crucial for young children, yet plaque and gingivitis pose significant challenges. This review evaluates oral health interven … rt defects. However, fluoride varnish showed mixed results. School-based interventions and advanced toothbrushing technologies effectively reduce early childhood caries and plaque. Despite publication bias, a low risk of bias was observed across studies. The findings underscore the importance of tailored interventions and collaboration among stakeholders. Compr …

A Minimally Invasive Approach to Managing Isolated Gingival Recession.

Gingival recession (GR), the apical shift of the gingival margin, results in root surface exposure. Its etiology is multifactorial, including teeth position within the dental arch, bony dehiscence, alveolar mucosa thickness, incorrect toothbrushing, orthodontic treatment, and periodontal disease. Coronally advanced flap (CAF) with a subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) is the gold standard for managing GR. With the introduction of minimally invasive surgery, various techniques proposed for managing GR minimize patient morbidity and maximize surgical outcomes. The present case report is…

Inhibitory effects of children's toothpastes on Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

AIM: As suppression of Streptococcus mutans in young children may prevent or delay colonisation of the oral cavity, toothbrushing with dentifrices containing anti-S. mutans activity may aid in preventing caries. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of children's dentifrices on the growth of S. mutans and non-mutans bacteria (Streptococcus sanguinis and Lactobacillus acidophilus). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The agar diffusion assay at neutral pH was used to examine the antibacterial activity of commercial dentifrices and their major constituents. RESULTS: Dentifrices containing 1,45…

Oral care and the risk of bloodstream infections in mechanically ventilated adults: A review.

RATIONALE: Bacteraemia, defined as the presence of viable bacteria in the circulating blood can result in bloodstream infection, which is one of the most frequent and challenging hospital-acquired infections. Bacteraemia occurs in healthy populations with manipulation of the oral mucosa, including toothbrushing. Oral care is commonly administered to mechanically ventilated patients, it is important to determine whether this practice contributes to the incidence of bacteraemia. This paper reviews the literature on the link between the manipulation of the oral cavity and the development of bacte…

Results after two years of non-operative treatment of occlusal surface in children with high caries prevalence.

The aim of this study was to describe the 2-year results of an individualized treatment program designed to control occlusal caries in erupting first permanent molars. The sample consisted of 145 five-to-six-year-old students divided into a control group (n = 71) and a test group (n = 74). All test children received a biannual basic preventive program and a recall system according to individual disease activity. The basic program consisted of 3 (March) and 2 (August) sessions of oral hygiene orientation and toothbrushing with fluoride gel. The analysis of the baseline and 1-2-year data showed …

New ideas and advancing technology in prevention and non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease.

Analytical, oral epidemiological studies in adult 'toothbrushing' populations show that the highest prevalence of missing teeth is for molars and maxillary premolars ('key-risk' teeth). The highest prevalence of subgingival microflora, gingivitis (CPITN-1), plaque retentive factors, such as subgingival calculus and restoration overhangs (CPITN-2), and diseased pockets > 3 mm (CPITN-3-4) is found on the approximal surfaces of the same teeth ('key-risk' surfaces). Primary and secondary prevention, as well as treatment of periodontal disease should be focused on these 'key-risk' surfaces. One sin…

Should We Wait to Brush Our Teeth? A Scoping Review Regarding Dental Caries and Erosive Tooth Wear.

BACKGROUND: Tooth brushing is a universal recommendation. However, the recommendations related to the time of its execution are conflicting, especially when dealing with patients at risk of erosive tooth wear (ETW) or dental caries. SUMMARY: Our objective was to summarize the evidence on the timing of brushing with fluoridated toothpaste in relation to ETW and cariogenic dietary challenges. We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA-ScR checklist, using three databases searching for in vivo, in situ, or in vitro studies involving human teeth exposed to either a cariogenic or an erosiv

Oral care behavior after purging in a sample of women with bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a mental health disorder associated with serious dental problems. The authors surveyed patients with a diagnosis of BN about their oral health behaviors after purging and their perspectives on barriers to patient-initiated discussion of eating disorders (EDs) with oral health professionals (OHPs). METHODS: A convenience sample of women with BN who were receiving treatment at major ED treatment centers (those centers that are members of the Academy of Eating Disorders, Deerfield, Ill.) completed a 45-item, self-reported online survey that the authors use to

[Use of the interproximal brush].

Interdental brushes are often recommended for interdental cleaning in people with destruction of periodontal tissue and open interproximal spaces. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how frequently interdental brush can reach the interdental spaces in individuals with and without papilla destruction. An outstanding percentage of brush-penetration trough interproximal spaces has been observed in patients with no gingival recession and no loss of attachment.
