The bacterial blight disease caused by Xanthomonas spp., a dilemma for farmers worldwide. The existing conventional methods have failed to effectively combat the disease. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on developing and implementing more affordable techniques to effectively manage bacterial blight effectively. Herein, we investigated the efficacy of copper-based nanoparticles (Cu NPs) synthesized via three different methods toward controlling bacterial blight disease in Anthurium andraeanum plants. For that, Cu NPs were engineered via chemical, semichemical, and green synthesis approaches.

This study demonstrates the transformative potential of machine learning in drug discovery by integrating comparative protein and ligand analysis with novel topological machine learning methods. Our approach sifts through large chemical libraries to identify promising molecular structures for targeting specific proteins with high precision. While many machine learning models have proven effective on benchmark datasets, we apply these techniques to discover compounds targeting methylcitrate dehydratase (AcnD), the second enzyme in the bacterial propionate catabolism pathway. Propionate cataboli

Alcohol use is an independent risk factor for the development of bacterial pneumonia due, in part, to impaired mucus-facilitated clearance, macrophage phagocytosis, and recruitment of neutrophils. Alcohol consumption is also known to reduce peripheral natural killer (NK) cell numbers and compromise NK cell cytolytic activity, especially NK cells with a mature phenotype. However, the role of innate lymphocytes, such as NK cells during host defense against alcohol-associated bacterial pneumonia is essentially unknown. We have previously shown that indole supplementation mitigates increases in pu

Two serovars of Salmonella enterica, namely serovar Typhimurium (ST) and serovar Choleraesuis (SC) account for the vast majority of clinical cases of swine salmonellosis worldwide. These serovars are thought to be transmitted among pigs in production settings mainly through fecal-oral routes. Yet, few studies have evaluated effects of these serovars on expression of innate immune targets when presented to pigs via repeated oral dosing in an attempt to model transmission in production settings. Thus, a primary objective of the current experiments was to evaluate expression of Toll-like receptor

Microbial fertilizers may improve phosphorus availability and pH in acidic soils, but field evidence linking these changes with medicinal plant biomass and specialised metabolite accumulation remains limited. Here, a one-season field experiment was conducted in acidic yellow soil in Guizhou Province, China, using four fertilization regimes for Lonicera macranthoides: an organic fertilizer plus compound fertilizer control (CK), a bacterial consortium (T1), a simplified bacterial combination (T2), and a fungal agent (T3). Soil chemical properties, soil aggregate composition, flower-bud biomass,

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have gained increasing attention in recent years due to their pivotal role in both health and disease. Emerging from both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, EVs serve as essential mediators of intercellular communication, exceeding the simplistic interactions observed with individual molecules. In this comprehensive review, we will focus on both Bacterial Extracellular Vesicles (BEV) and on Host derived Extracellular Vesicles (HEV) and highlight mechanistic principles, as well as their transformation into diagnostic and therapeutic tools. We will start with a short

Efficient management of disguised toxic pollutants (DTPs), which can undergo microbial degradation and convert into more toxic substances, necessitates the collaboration of diverse microbial populations in wastewater treatment plants. However, the identification of key bacterial degraders capable of controlling the toxicity risks of DTPs through division of labor mechanisms in activated sludge microbiomes has received limited attention. In this study, we investigated the key degraders capable of controlling the risk of estrogenicity associated with nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO), a representati

Microbes play important roles in the transport and transformation of selenium (Se) in the environment, thereby influencing plant resistance to Se and Se accumulation in plant. The objectives are to characterize the bacteria with high Se tolerance and reduction capacity and explore the significance of microbial origins on their Se tolerance, reduction rate and efficiency. Two bacterial strains were isolated from a naturally occurred Se-rich soil at tea orchard in southern Anhui Province, China. The reduction kinetics of selenite was investigated and the reducing product was characterized using

The treatment of bacterial infections is increasingly complicated by the ability of bacteria to develop resistance to antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial agents are often categorized according to their principal mechanism of action. Mechanisms include interference with cell wall synthesis (eg, beta-lactams and glycopeptide agents), inhibition of protein synthesis (macrolides and tetracyclines), interference with nucleic acid synthesis (fluoroquinolones and rifampin), inhibition of a metabolic pathway (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole), and disruption of bacterial membrane structure (polymyxins an

Cyanide is a major environmental pollutant of the chemical and metallurgical industries. Although extremely toxic, cyanide can enzymatically be converted to the less toxic thiocyanate by rhodaneses (thiosulfate:cyanide sulfurtransferases, EC 2.8.1.1). We engineered a genetic system to express high levels of recombinant Pseudomonas aeruginosa rhodanese (r-RhdA) in Escherichia coli, and used this organism to test the role of r-RhdA in cyanide detoxification. Inducible expression of the rhdA gene under the control of the hybrid T7-lacO promoter yielded active r-RhdA over a 4-h period, though r-Rh

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition arising from a dysregulated host immune response to infection, leading to a substantial global health burden. The accurate identification of bacterial pathogens in sepsis is essential for guiding effective antimicrobial therapy and optimising patient outcomes. Traditional culture-based bacterial typing methods present inherent limitations, necessitating the exploration of alternative diagnostic approaches. This study reports the successful application of Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy in combination with chemometrics as a potent tool for

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory oral disease characterized by irreversible alveolar bone resorption, which severely impairs oral health and even leads to tooth loss. Clinical bone augmentation therapy for alveolar bone defects mainly relies on exogenous bone substitute materials. However, traditional materials are prone to implantation failure due to the persistent inflammatory microenvironment and bacterial infection in the periodontal area. The addition of antibiotics to improve antibacterial properties not only induces bacterial resistance but also causes systemic toxic and side eff

It is very important to understand the communication and interaction mechanisms between the host and its resident microorganisms on host physiology and for precise diagnosis and treatment. Although intestinal fungi and bacteria dysbiosis is increasingly linked to ankylosing spondylitis (AS), their mechanisms of action have been rarely illustrated. In this paper, fecal samples from 10 AS monkeys and 10 healthy controls were collected to systematically characterize the gut mycobiota and microbiota in AS monkeys by 16S rRNA and ITS2 DNA sequencing. Our results showed the gut fungi of Kazachstania

Antibiotic pollution in aquatic environments drives the spread of resistance genes and threatens ecosystem health. Microalgae offer a dual-function platform that both senses antibiotic stress and actively removes these contaminants. This review synthesizes current knowledge on microalgae-based antibiotic removal and biotransformation, emphasizing the integration of biosorption, enzyme-mediated transformation-primarily via cytochrome P450 and nitroreductase-and co‑metabolic processes. We highlight the phycosphere as a dynamic interface where symbiotic bacteria enhance algal survival and polluta

Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) represents a highly promising approach for combating resistant pathogens without inducing drug resistance. Selective photo-inactivation of bacteria without damage to the mammalian cells is a prerequisite for the clinical application of aPDT. In this work, based on the different azoreductase levels between mammalian cells and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), an azoreductase-responsive "OFF-ON-OFF" photosensitizer, namely Ru-AzoCF3, was designed and synthesized as a proof-of-concept. The aPDT activity of Ru-AzoCF3 is initially suppressed by the presenc

Anaerobes dominate the microbiota of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, where a significant portion of small molecules can be degraded or modified. However, the enormous metabolic capacity of gut anaerobes remains largely elusive in contrast to aerobic bacteria, mainly due to the requirement of sophisticated laboratory settings. In this study, we employed an in silico machine learning platform, MoleculeX, to predict the metabolic capacity of a gut anaerobe, Clostridium sporogenes, against small molecules. Experiments revealed that among the top seven candidates predicted as unstable, six indeed

The unique bactericidal mechanism of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) is considered to be an effective strategy to deal with antibiotic resistance, but the oxidative stress damage caused by excessive accumulation of MNPs to normal cells cannot be ignored. Achieving on-demand release of nano-drugs in specific infection environments is highly attractive. Herein, we constructed a "core-shell" nanogel (G@CuS) based on a copper sulfide (CuS) antimicrobial agent and gelatin for targeted drug release and bacterial clearance in a gelatinase infected microenvironment. G@CuS produced heat and reactive oxygen

Non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphomas (NHL) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoid neoplasms with complex etiopathology, rich symptomatology, and a variety of clinical courses, therefore requiring different therapeutic approaches. The hypothesis that an infectious agent may initiate chronic inflammation and facilitate B lymphocyte transformation and lymphogenesis has been raised in recent years. Viruses, like EBV, HTLV-1, HIV, HCV and parasites, like Plasmodium falciparum, have been linked to the development of lymphomas. The association of chronic Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection with mucosa-a
