Minimizing the complications associated with migrating catheters.

This article seeks to explore the clinical practice of urinary catheter fixation. Traditionally, this area of practice has been neglected and nurses are familiar with tension lesions and dermal problems associated with inappropriate or incorrect urinary catheter fixation. A novel solution to this problem is a catheter fixation device. This device secures the catheter safely, making clinical practice safer and the experience of catheterization more tolerable for the patient. An example of a urinary catheter fixation device available in the UK is Bard's StatLock.

Intermittent self-catheterization in tetraplegic patients: a 6-year experience gained in the spinal cord unit in Prague.

OBJECTIVES: To present a system of urological care for patients with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) in the Spinal Cord Unit in Prague. METHODS: Forty-one out of 412 patients hospitalized with acute SCI between 2007 and 2012 with motor complete SCI (AIS A,B) at the C4-C7 motor level and with sufficient follow-up duration were selected. Patients were trained using a male bladder catheterization model (37 with a transurethral catheter and 4 with a suprapubic catheter) to perform intermittent catheterization (IC) using an ergohand device, and were later encouraged to perform self-catheterizati

Real-world outcomes of transurethral resection of the prostate: a Portuguese cohort.

BACKGROUND: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a leading cause of lower urinary tract symptoms and bladder outlet obstruction in ageing men. Transurethral resection of the prostate remains a benchmark surgical treatment, although contemporary practice has been challenged by less invasive techniques. We aimed to evaluate real-world effectiveness and safety outcomes of transurethral resection of the prostate for benign prostatic obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single-center, retrospective, observational cohort study including all consecutive patients who underwent TURP between October 2020 and

Biomimetic urine flow control can preserve bladder function in patients with indwelling catheterization.

For patients with long-term indwelling catheterization, bladder function will be affected. It is necessary to explore whether biomimetic urine flow control (BUFC) can improve bladder function in patients undergoing indwelling catheterization. A retrospective, data-only, cohort study was carried out. The patients admitted to the intensive care unit, who had retained catheter and been continuously using a urodynamic monitoring system for over 30 days were selected. They were divided into 2 groups based on whether they were using BUFC function. The urodynamic monitoring data of the 2 groups were

Transvaginal closure of urinary bladder opening and Mitrofanoff technique in a neurologically impaired female with chronic indwelling catheter: a case presentation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic catheterization remains the only attractive option in specific circumstances, especially in neurologically impaired patients. Complications produced by the indwelling catheters, like patulous urethra and bladder neck destruction, usually lead to severe incontinence and significant nursing difficulties. Here, we describe a rare case, a urinary bladder opening representing massive and extensive destruction of the urethra and bladder sphincter due to an indwelling catheter. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 46-year-old paraplegic woman complaining of recurrent febrile urinary t

Effectiveness of a bundled approach to reduce urinary catheters and infection rates in trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are common nosocomial infections. In 2015, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services began imposing financial penalties for institutions where CAUTI rates are higher than predicted. However, the surveillance definition for CAUTI is not a clinical diagnosis and may represent asymptomatic bacteriuria. The objective of this study was to compare rates of urinary catheterization and CAUTI before and after the implementation of a bundled intervention. METHODS: This retrospective review evaluated trauma patients from January 2013…

The electrified catheter. Role in sterilizing urine and decreasing bacteriuria.

A catheter was designed to decrease the incidence of catheter-induced urinary infections. A randomized, controlled study was performed to assess its safety and efficacy. The study comprised 24 patients subjected to hemorrhoidectomy. The criteria for entry were a preoperative urinary pathogen count below 10(5) colony-forming units/ml urine as well as postoperative urinary retention that did not respond to conservative measures. The 24 patients were randomly assigned to treatment using a Nelaton catheter in 12 patients and an electrified catheter in the remaining 12. The catheters were left in p

Non-inferiority of short-term urethral catheterization following fistula repair surgery: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A vaginal fistula is a devastating condition, affecting an estimated 2 million girls and women across Africa and Asia. There are numerous challenges associated with providing fistula repair services in developing countries, including limited availability of operating rooms, equipment, surgeons with specialized skills, and funding from local or international donors to support surgeries and subsequent post-operative care. Finding ways of providing services in a more efficient and cost-effective manner, without compromising surgical outcomes and the overall health of the patient, is p

A case report of usual presentation of unusual bladder mass-polypoid cystitis in a young Indian female.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Polypoid cystitis is a rare benign exophytic lesion affecting the bladder mucosa that clinically and radiologically resembles urothelial carcinoma. An adequate diagnosis of this pathology requires histological evaluation. Owing to the rare occurrence of this benign urinary bladder lesion, its prevalence is under-reported, with very few cases reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of polypoid cystitis in a young Indian female, who presented to the urology department with obstructive LUTS and a history of catheterization for urinary retention. Suprapubic endoscopic vesical neck suspension (Stamey procedure) for control of urinary incontinence in a woman following cauda equina injury.

Suprapubic endoscopic suspension of the vesical neck is a popular and effective procedure for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women. A woman who suffered a traumatic cauda equina injury had areflexic detrusor dysfunction with normal intravesical filling pressure. The patient had moderate proximal urethral dysfunction resulting in incontinence despite an adequate intermittent self-catheterization regimen and treatment with an alpha-sympathomimetic drug. Following suprapubic endoscopic vesical neck suspension she has remained totally continent on intermittent self-catheterization

Urinary Retention in Orthopaedic Surgery: An Evidence-based Algorithm.

Postoperative urinary retention (POUR), the inability to urinate spontaneously after surgery, affects up to 43% of orthopaedic patients and can lead to pain, bladder injury, urinary tract infections, increased healthcare costs, and delayed rehabilitation. POUR arises from decreased neurologic signaling, reduced bladder sensation and contractility, or mechanical obstruction. Risk factors include advanced age, prior urinary retention, comorbidities (eg, benign prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes, renal dysfunction), anesthesia type, perioperative opioid use, and catheterization. Despite its prevalen
