Structural analysis of women's social representations of urinary incontinence.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the structure of social representations of urinary incontinence among Brazilian women. METHOD: A cross-sectional study, which used semi-structured questionnaires applied online between September 2021 and June 2022. A total of 796 Brazilian women participated. Lexical and similarity analyses were performed using the EVOC 2000® and IRAMUTEQ® software. Evoked words were organized based on frequency and evocation hierarchy. RESULTS: The analyses indicated that the words "urine", "embarrassment", "pee", "discomfort", "pain", "discomfort", "urine leakage", "infection", "bladde…

Defining success after surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence.

BACKGROUND: A consensus standardized definition of success after stress urinary incontinence surgical treatment is lacking, which precludes comparisons between studies and affects patient counseling. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify optimal patient-centric definition(s) of success after stress urinary incontinence surgical treatment and to compare the identified "more accurate" treatment success definitions with a commonly used composite definition of success (ie, no reported urine leakage, negative cough stress test result, and no retreatment). STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated 51 distinct …

Urinary Incontinence Medications: Patient-Initiated Concerns in Primary Care.

IMPORTANCE: Guideline-recommended medications for overactive bladder and urge urinary incontinence (OAB/UUI) are effective but have high costs and side effects. Little is known about patient concerns regarding these medications when prescribed by their primary care providers (PCPs). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to describe PCP-patient interactions when prescribing medications for OAB/UUI, specifically clinical concerns, cost and authorization issues, and mode of communication for these interactions. STUDY DESIGN: Using electronic health records, we identified a retrospective cohort of…

[Stress urinary incontinence in female athletes: a taboo topic].

A TABOO TOPIC. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) has a high prevalence (between 20% and 81%) in sportswomen, all the more so if they practice a sport at risk for the perineal function, including jumping, running, strong abdominal contraction in combat sports, and if their practice is intensive and/or repeated with a dose effect. Making sportswomen aware of the importance of an educational prevention program is key, as the impact on performance in top-level sportswomen is real. In leisure activities, or in sports without repeated impact, regular activity is protective against SUI. This review e…

Urinary Incontinence in Older Adults: Impact on Caregiver Burden.

The objective of the current descriptive, cross-sectional, and relationship-seeking study was to evaluate the severity of urinary incontinence (UI) in older adults and its impact on care burden of their family caregivers. This study was performed prospectively with 80 older adults (aged ≥65 years) with UI and their family caregivers who attended a urology clinic between June and December 2021. UI was assessed using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-UI-SF), and caregiver burden using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Increase in care time was associat…

Conservative interventions for managing urinary incontinence after prostate surgery.

BACKGROUND: Men may need to undergo prostate surgery to treat prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia. After these surgeries, men may experience urinary incontinence (UI). Conservative treatments such as pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT), electrical stimulation and lifestyle changes can be undertaken to help manage the symptoms of UI. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of conservative interventions for managing urinary incontinence after prostate surgery. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Specialised Register, which contains trials identified from the Cochrane Ce…

Urinary incontinence in women who have undergone bariatric surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a known risk factor for urinary incontinence (UI). As bariatric surgery can result in significant and sustainable weight loss, many chronic diseases closely linked to obesity have likewise shown improvement after surgical weight loss. We propose that bariatric surgery may significantly improve obesity-related UI symptoms as well as improve quality of life. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This is an interim analysis of an ongoing, prospective, single-institution observational study looking at UI in women enrolled in a bariatric surgery program. Participants completed the Pelvi…

Correlation between ischemic stroke topography and female urinary incontinence.

AIM: To investigate the association between ischemic stroke topography and the onset of urinary incontinence (UI); to evaluate predictors of post-stroke UI in women. METHOD: We prospectively followed up a cohort of women with ischemic stroke confirmed by clinical and computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans findings. Participants were subjected to interview, clinical evaluation, and urodynamic study if needed at 6 months post-stroke and divided in continent and incontinent groups. Non-parametric tests compared the baseline characteristics among the groups and determi…

Bibliometric analysis of studies on stress urinary incontinence surgery.

BACKGROUND: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is characterized by the involuntary leakage of urine during activities that increase abdominal pressure. In recent years, a considerable number of studies on SUI surgery have been published. However, there has been a lack of systematic quantification and comprehensive summarization of these studies. Bibliometrics is a discipline that utilizes measurement methods to quantify scientific literature. Thus, this study utilized publications from the Web of Science (WOS) as a data source and conducted a comprehensive analysis and visualization of studies …

Single-incision sling operations for urinary incontinence in women.

BACKGROUND: Stress urinary incontinence imposes a significant health and economic burden on individuals and society. Single-incision slings are a minimally-invasive treatment option for stress urinary incontinence. They involve passing a short synthetic device through the anterior vaginal wall to support the mid-urethra. The use of polypropylene mesh in urogynaecology, including mid-urethral slings, is restricted in many countries. This is a review update (previous search date 2012). OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of single-incision sling operations for treating urinary incontinence in wom…

Stem-cell therapy in stress urinary incontinence: A review.

The incidence of urinary incontinence (UI) is approximately 10%-40% in women, affecting one to two hundred million women worldwide. Stress UI (SUI) is characterized by involuntary urination due to increased abdominal stress and urine leakage without bladder contraction. Surgical treatments include midurethral slings, bulking agents, and Burch colposuspension to restore urethral continence. Nevertheless, an optimal treatment for all types of incontinence has not yet been established. Stem-cell therapy has emerged as a novel treatment for many diseases. Stem cells can self-renew and can differen…

Kegel Exercise Training Program among Women with Urinary Incontinence.

A common condition with a large global prevalence and a persistent medical taboo for many people is urinary incontinence. Around one in three women globally are impacted by it. The most frequently suggested physical therapy treatment for women with stress incontinence or urge incontinence is Kegel exercise (also called pelvic floor muscle training). This study aims to assess the effects of a Kegel exercise training program among women with urinary incontinence. The study was conducted at three government hospitals in Egypt's Port Said city's outpatient gynecological clinic. The intervention de…

Pharmacological Management of Urinary Incontinence: Current and Emerging Treatment.

Pharmacological management of urinary incontinence (UI) is currently based on antimuscarinic and beta-3-agonist drugs. Botulinum toxin A detrusor injections represent an effective but more invasive alternative. This review covers the latest developments of the currently available drugs and the emerging compounds for the treatment of UI. Evidence shows that new antimuscarinics and beta-3-agonists with improved safety profiles may offer unique options to patients intolerant to currently available drugs. Combination therapy proved to be a non-invasive alternative for patients refractory to first-…
