PURPOSE: To report the safety and the effectiveness of deep sclerectomy (DS) with a new nonabsorbable uveoscleral hema implant (Esnoper-Clip) designed to increase trabecular and uveoscleral outflow and to achieve higher intrascleral blebs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven eyes of 27 patients with open-angle glaucoma, who underwent DS with an Esnoper-Clip implant, were included in this study. All patients were followed up after 12 months.

A method is reported in which the isolated bovine eye is perfused through a long posterior ciliary artery with buffered physiological saline, to provide simultaneous monitoring of drug effects on intraocular pressure (IOP), vascular resistance and the condition of the blood-aqueous barrier. With perfusion under constant pressure of 45 mm Hg, perfusate flows at 1.64 +/- 0.12 ml.min-1 (mean +/- SEM) and IOP is 7.26 +/- 0.16 mm Hg. Seventeen cases of sympathetic ophthalmia have been followed up for as long as 23 years (average 10.6 years). Sixty-five percent of those patients treated with corticosteroids retained a visual acuity of 20/60 or better. Complications were frequent and included secondary glaucoma, cataract, exudative retinal detachment, and choroidal scarring. Uneventful cataract extraction was difficult to manage, requiring frequent changes in the steroid dosage, and in one patient two glaucoma procedures. The duration of steroid therapy was quite variable and ranged from a few months to six years or longer.

The effects of unilateral sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS) on regional blood flow in the rabbit were studied with radioactive microspheres.
