Changes in attitudes and beliefs about childhood vaccination among parents in the United States: A repeat cross-sectional survey before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Parental vaccine hesitancy and refusal worsened during the COVID-19 public health emergency, but little is known about parental attitudes toward vaccines in the post-emergency era. METHODS: Two internet-based cross-sectional surveys were conducted among parents of children aged <18 years in the United States (US) during the COVID-19 public health emergency (Survey 1; January-March 2022) and after the emergency ended (Survey 2; December 2023-March 2024). Participants were recruited from the National Health and Wellness Survey. Study participants completed a self-administered survey

Case Series of Guillain-Barré Syndrome After the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (Oxford-AstraZeneca) Vaccine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vaccination has been associated with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). Amid a global vaccination campaign to stop the spread of COVID-19, fears of GBS can contribute to vaccine hesitancy. We describe 3 cases of GBS in Calgary, Canada, presenting within 2 weeks of receiving the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (COVISHIELD) Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccination and review the available literature. RECENT FINDINGS: All 3 patients presented to the hospital in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, within a one-month time frame with GBS. Their clinical courses ranged from mild to severe impairment, all requiring immun

Prioritizing Pregnant Women for Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination in African Countries.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in pregnancy is associated with excess maternal and infant morbidity and mortality in both African and higher-resource settings. Furthermore, mounting evidence demonstrates the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women and infants. However, national guidelines in many African countries are equivocal or lack recommendations on COVID-19 vaccine in pregnancy. We summarize key data on COVID-19 epidemiology and vaccination among pregnant African women to highlight major barriers to vaccination and recommend 4 interventions. First, policymaker

Assessing Human Papillomavirus Knowledge and Vaccination Intentions Following a Virtual Educational Intervention for Parents and Guardians.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally, with high-risk strains contributing to cancers of the cervix, penis, anus, vulva, vagina, and oropharynx. Despite the availability of an effective vaccine (Gardasil-9) and broad support from public health organizations, vaccination rates remain suboptimal due to parental hesitancy and misinformation. This study assessed the impact of an educational intervention on HPV knowledge and vaccination intent among parents and guardians of children aged 8 to 17 years. METHODS: Pharmacy students conduct

Acceptance and attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy in Canada.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a unique set of risks to pregnant women and pregnant people. SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of severe illness and adverse perinatal outcomes. However, evidence regarding the use of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnancy shows safety and efficacy. Despite eligibility and recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination among pregnant women and pregnant people in Canada, uptake remains lower compared to the general population, warranting exploration of influencing factors. The COVERED study, a national prospective cohort, utilized web-based survey

Human Papillomavirus Vaccination in India: Paving the Way to Cervical Cancer Prevention.

Cervical cancer remains a major public health concern in India, contributing significantly to global morbidity and mortality. Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary etiological factor, making vaccination a critical preventive strategy. Recent developments, including the introduction of the indigenous quadrivalent HPV vaccine Cervavac and its proposed inclusion in the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) for girls aged 9-14 years, represent a significant milestone. However, challenges such as vaccine hesitancy, logistical barriers, and limited awareness

COVID-19 Vaccine Acceptability and Adherence to Preventive Measures in Somalia: Results of an Online Survey.

Most countries are currently gravitating towards vaccination as mainstay strategy to quell COVID-19 transmission. Between December 2020 and January 2021, we conducted a follow-up online survey in Somalia to monitor adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures, and COVID-19 vaccine acceptability and reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Adherence was measured via a composite adherence score based on four measures (physical distancing, face mask use, hand hygiene, and mouth covering when coughing/sneezing). We analyzed 4543 responses (mean age: 23.5 ± 6.4 years, 62.4% males). The mean adherence score duri

Pandemic transition: A review of social media text mining for pandemic transition in the post-vaccination era.

In the post-vaccination phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, surveillance have become critical for sustaining disease control, identifying new variants, and preserving vaccine efficacy. This study explores how social media text mining can support these priorities by providing valuable insights into public sentiment, vaccine hesitancy, and the emergence of novel viral strains. By analyzing online conversations, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of questions and concerns surrounding booster shots, enabling the development of targeted public health initiatives to address vaccine reluctance a

Clinician Perceptions of the Impact of Switching HPV Vaccine Initiation to 9-10 Years.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although HPV vaccine initiation as early as aged 9 years has been recommended, most clinicians initiate at ages 11 to 12 years. We assessed clinician-reported impact of early initiation on parental responses and vaccine discussions. METHODS: As part of an ongoing cluster randomized pragmatic trial across 31 Colorado and California pediatric practices, we allocated practices to switch HPV vaccine initiation to ages 9 to 10 years or to enhanced usual care (initiation at ages 11 to 12 years). All clinicians received online training on improving HPV vaccination; interve

What Is Old Is New Again: Tips and Tricks for Recognizing and Treating Vaccine-Preventable Diseases of Childhood Presenting to the Emergency Department.

Across the globe, there has been a resurgence in vaccine-preventable diseases reflecting declining immunity, vaccine hesitancy and gaps in vaccine coverage. Vaccination was seen as one of the most successful public health interventions of the 20th century-as a consequence, many vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and diphtheria were relegated to textbooks. With the re-emergence of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), it is an urgent priority to equip emergency physicians with the knowledge to rapidly identify and manage potential cases and strengthen public health measures to curb tra

'Poisonous, filthy, loathsome, damnable stuff': the rhetorical ecology of vaccination concern.

In this article, we analyze newspaper articles and advertisements mentioning vaccination from 1915 to 1922 and refer to historical studies of vaccination practices and attitudes in the early 20th century in order to assess historical continuities and discontinuities in vaccination concern. In the Progressive Era period, there were a number of themes or features that resonated with contemporary issues and circumstances: 1) fears of vaccine contamination; 2) distrust of medical professionals; 3) resistance to compulsory vaccination; and 4) the local nature of vaccination concern. Such observatio

Beyond the needle: a qualitative exploration of Sierra Leonean healthcare workers' post COVID-19 vaccination experiences.

The global health crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the necessity of swift vaccine development and distribution to curb virus transmission. However, discussions on vaccine acceptance and hesitancy have predominantly focused on pre-vaccination attitudes, often overlooking the significance of post-vaccination experiences in shaping individual and communal attitudes toward vaccines. This oversight is particularly critical among healthcare workers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), who play a dual role in combating the pandemic and influencing public vaccine sentim
