OBJECTIVE: The internal pelvic floor muscles that support the pelvic viscera lie within the external pelvic structures, which support posture and locomotion. The presence of pain in the hip, groin, leg, abdomen, and/or back in patients with pelvic pain suggests that external pelvic sites may act as pain generators that contribute to chronic pelvic pain (CPP). The aim of this study was to report musculoskeletal diagnoses resulting from including a physiatry evaluation as part of a Multidisciplinary Pelvic Pain Clinic for women with complex chronic pain.

During blunt abdominal trauma the small bowel and/or its mesentery may be injured; if abdominal trauma occurs after compression by an incorrectly-applied seat belt, underlying viscera may be crushed between the vertebral and the seat belt; ischemia or infarction of the intestinal wall, and delayed fibrosis and stenosis may occur. We present a patient, operated on two months after blunt abdominal trauma, with small bowel obstruction secondary to post-traumatic intestinal fibrosis. Assuming that this condition is rarely suspected, a delayed diagnosis and treatment of these patients may occur.

Fifty-four cases of exomphalos were reviewed. After the exclusion of five cases, seven out of 25 cases of exomphalos minor had co-existing Meckel's diverticulum compared with one out of 24 cases of exomphalos major. The high incidence of Meckel's diverticulum in exomphalos minor highlights the importance of surgical rather than manual reduction of the sac contents in order to exclude the presence of viscera from the sac before division. Also, the raised incidence of Meckel's diverticulum in general may well be due to a raised incidence in exomphalos minor in particular.

The histopathologic study of 3 cases of gestational mumps is presented. The tissue studies was obtained from a spontaneous abortion (case 1) and from 2 therapeutic abortions (cases 2 and 3). Severe placental and fetal lesions were observed, indicating a probable association with maternal mumps. The main placental lesion was a diffuse proliferative necrotic villitis with severe lesions in the fetal vascular circuit, probably the cause of death.
