Water-based medium-expansion foam depopulation of adult cattle.

Current options for depopulation of adult cattle are limited, have logistic constraints, and may not be practical on a large scale. Aspirated water-based foam (WBF) has been shown to be successful in depopulating poultry and swine but has yet to be tested in cattle. WBF is advantageous because necessary equipment can be readily available, easy to use, and presents minimal personnel risk. With the use of a modified rendering trailer in a field setting, we evaluated the efficacy of aspirated WBF for depopulation of adult cattle. Water-based medium-expansion foam was added to the trailer holding

Localized laryngeal amyloidosis: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The larynx is the most common site of localized head and neck amyloidosis. Our study aimed to review the clinical features, treatments, and outcomes associated with localized laryngeal amyloidosis (LA). We also compared these features between two different time periods to evaluate the evolution of LA management. METHODS: A literature search using PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Library identified cases of LA published between 1891 and 2021. Biopsy-proven cases of localized LA were included. Non-English studies, animal studies, and reviews were excluded. RESULTS: 282 patients

Aerodynamically driven phonation of individual vocal folds under general anesthesia in canines.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We previously developed an instrument called the Aerodynamic Vocal Fold Driver (AVFD) for intraoperative magnified assessment of vocal fold (VF) vibration during microlaryngoscopy under general anesthesia. Excised larynx testing showed that the AVFD could provide useful information about the vibratory characteristics of each VF independently. The present investigation expands those findings by testing new iterations of the AVFD during microlaryngoscopy in the canine model. STUDY DESIGN: Animal model. METHODS: The AVFD is a handheld instrument that is positioned to cont

Real-Time Light-Guided Vocal Fold Injection: Ex Vivo Feasibility Study in a Canine Model.

OBJECTIVE: The transcricothyroid (CT) membrane approach is a good option for office-based vocal fold injection (VFI). However, because the needle tip is invisible during injection using the CT approach, precise localization requires a high level of experience, and mastering this approach involves a steep learning curve. To overcome current limitations, we conceptualized a novel technique: real-time light-guided VFI (RL-VFI), which enables simultaneous VFI under direct visualization of the lighted needle tip. Herein, we aimed to verify the feasibility of RL-VFI in cadaveric canine model, simula

Functional regeneration of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury during thyroid surgery using an asymmetrically porous nerve guide conduit in an animal model.

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord paralysis (VCP) caused by recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) damage during thyroidectomy commonly results in serious medico-legal problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of an asymmetrically porous polycaprolactone (PCL)/Pluronic F127 nerve guide conduit (NGC) for functional regeneration in a RLN injury animal model. METHODS: A biodegradable, asymmetrically porous PCL/F127 NGC with selective permeability was fabricated for use in this study. A 10-mm segment of left RLN was resected in 28 New Zealand white rabbits, and then an asymmetrically porou

Neurofilament light chain concentration does not correlate with disease status in Labrador Retrievers affected with idiopathic laryngeal paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether plasma neurofilament light chain (pNfL) concentration was altered in Labrador Retrievers with idiopathic laryngeal paralysis (ILP) compared to a control population. A secondary aim was to investigate relationships between age, height, weight, and body mass index in the populations studied. ANIMALS: 123 dogs: 62 purebred Labrador Retrievers with ILP (ILP Cases) and 61 age-matched healthy medium- to large-breed dogs (Controls). METHODS: Dogs, recruited from August 1, 2016, to March 1, 2022, were categorized as case or control based on

Acoustic Screening of the "Wet voice": Proof of Concept in an ex vivo Canine Laryngeal Model.

BACKGROUND: Current protocols for bedside swallow evaluation have high rates of false negative results. Though experts are not consistently able to screen for aspiration risk by assessing vocal quality, there is emerging evidence that vocal acoustic parameters are significantly different in patients at risk of aspiration. Herein, we aimed to determine whether the presence of material on the vocal folds in an excised canine laryngeal model may have an impact on acoustic and aerodynamic measures. METHODS: Two ex vivo canine larynges were tested. Three liquids of different viscosities (1:100 dil

Fluid-structure-acoustic interactions in an ex vivo porcine phonation model.

In the clinic, many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures focus on the oscillation patterns of the vocal folds (VF). Dynamic characteristics of the VFs, such as symmetry, periodicity, and full glottal closure, are considered essential features for healthy phonation. However, the relevance of these individual factors in the complex interaction between the airflow, laryngeal structures, and the resulting acoustics has not yet been quantified. Sustained phonation was induced in nine excised porcine larynges without vocal tract (supraglottal structures had been removed above the ventricular folds)

Dynamic Biomechanical Analysis of Vocal Folds Using Pipette Aspiration Technique.

The voice producing process is a complex interplay between glottal pressure, vocal folds, their elasticity and tension. The material properties of vocal folds are still insufficiently studied, because the determination of material properties in soft tissues is often difficult and connected to extensive experimental setups. To shed light on this less researched area, in this work, a dynamic pipette aspiration technique is utilized to measure the elasticity in a frequency range of 100-1000 Hz. The complex elasticity could be assessed with the phase shift between exciting pressure and tissue move

Different Vibratory Conditions Elicit Different Structural and Biological Vocal Fold Changes in an In-Vivo Rabbit Model of Phonation.

OBJECTIVE: Vibration of the vocal folds can disrupt the tissue and induce structural, functional, and molecular changes; the presence or absence of contact between the vocal folds during vibration can affect the type and extent of these changes. The purpose of this study was to characterize vocal fold changes following 2 hours of contact phonation or phonation without vibratory contact. METHODS: Six New Zealand white breeder rabbits underwent 120 minutes of phonation with or without vibratory contact, and four served as nonphonated controls. The larynx was exposed and current was applied to t

Medial Surface Dynamics as a Function of Subglottal Pressure in a Canine Larynx Model.

During vocal fold vibration, there may be a mucosal wave in the superior-inferior (vertical) direction, resulting in a convergent shape during opening and a divergent shape during closing. Most of our understanding of the converging/diverging shape of the glottis has come from studies in a hemilarynx model. Previous work has shown that vibratory patterns in the full excised larynx are different than the hemilarynx. This study characterized the dynamics of the medial glottal wall geometry during vibrations in the full excised canine larynx model. Using particle image velocimetry, the intraglott

Cooling the "oven": a temperature study of air and glottal tissue during laser surgery in an ex vivo calf larynx model.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic microlaryngeal laser surgery performed with general anesthesia through a laryngoscope speculum generates heat that accumulates at the distal lumen, creating an "oven" effect and potentially causing bystander thermal damage to nontarget tissue such as the contralateral vocal fold. We report the effects of cooling on air and tissue temperatures that occurred during simulated laryngeal laser surgery with KTP and thulium lasers in an ex vivo calf model. METHODS: Ten fresh excised calf larynges were studied at room temperature. Laser energy was applied to one vocal fold for

Medialization laryngoplasty with gore-tex: an animal study.

Vocal cord paralysis is a disease that can cause voice disability and aspiration problems. Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE; Gore-Tex) has been widely used in cardiovascular and plastic surgery; however, its biocompatibility and safety have not been established precisely in the larynx. In this study, the biocompatibility and safety of ePTFE used in vocal cord medialization in the rabbit larynx were assessed. Type 1 thyroplasty with Gore-Tex was performed on one side of the larynx in eight rabbits. A sham procedure was applied on the contralateral side of their larynx. The rabbits were s
